What culture are you a part of and do they have high expectations for appearance? Skincare is such a HUGE part of Korean culture so prioritizing my skincare has been a big lesson I've been learning since I was a child watching my mom do her "under makeup" routine (even when it was super tough when my skin was struggling with aggressive acne). Let me know if you relate. :)

While I’m Asian, I grew up in a plain Canadian household, so expectations are pretty North American standard. I don’t think my mom ever had high expectations regarding my appearance. She never really pushed me to use skincare products over that one cleanser when I entered my teens, but then again I was really blessed during that time and had pretty much no acne (only the occasional pimple on my nose). She did seem very worried about hair, going as far as to pay treatment for the few armpit hairs I had (which I’m not sure gave any results). She has been more critical of my skin in my adulthood since I’ve had to deal with some acne and I get hyperpigmentation pretty easily (with dermatillomania making healing more difficult as well), but she doesn’t make a big deal out of it.

In my home country vaseline and slugging w it has been big for generations. It can help reduce scars is generally believed. Oh edit for Nivea. They were the big brand advertised there so I got my mum to daily use it on her face. She looks great. Now living in Europe for many yrs Korean information has influenced me a lot.

I’m born in China but immigrated to US in first grade even with this life experience I hold myself to the beauty standards passed down to me from my family. My biggest fear in life is losing my youth 😢 so I’ve worked extra hard to keep up 😂

One thing I learnt in my 30s is that skincare routines tend to stick if they’re more enjoyable or fun e.g. an oil cleanser that smells nice or a body lotion that’s moisturising without feeling greasy. It doesn’t always have to be the most expensive, but if it shows results and/or is fun to use, I’m likely to stick to it and get better results ❤

Thank you for all those lessons. Having a routine is really my biggest struggle because the non-instant gratification makes my ADHD brain not as inclined to follow through the day after. I’ve already simplified the products I use because of that, but it’s difficult (having healthy life habits too). One thing I’ve noticed too is that beyond time, my skin changes through the seasons and depending where I am. So my environment also plays a lot on how nice my skin feels. Thank you a lot for the tip to step back from the mirror. I feel it could help me not pick at my face (I struggle with dermatillomania).

Every day is a new chance. Meds have not helped me w my adhd. The opposite even after using them for only one month I felt burnt out for years. What has been helping me for 3 yrs is magnesium. It calms me down during the day and because of that I can do more longer during the day and sleep better at night due to being more tired. But it helps me from waking up at night as well. Vit d and b12 also help massively. When mag level is ok you will feel nauseous so then take only on important days. Work schooldays etc. But now I want to look up and try the foods advised for kids n people w adhd and autism. So definitely look into that as well. Cause adhd is painful on many levels. But if these things can make that even a bit less why not.

@@priskruger314 Oh thanks for the tips! My meds do help me, but having a little boost is definitely always helpful. I’ll look into magnesium, Vitamin D and B12 =).

I finally find the sunscreen that works for me in my early 30s after trying and giving up and trying again. I'm really oily and my workplace is so humid it's difficult to find something that works
