$30 Outdoor Bench with Back from 2x6s [Only 3 Tools and 30mins]
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This bench is actually a spin off of the well known Leopold Bench which was named after the conservationist Aldo Leopold who built them for birdwatching and nature photography. I liked the simplicity of the Leopold Bench but wanted to modify the design a little by varying the angles to make it a little more comfortable and have a proper seat and back. So this is the design that I came up with. If you are interested in the 2x8 version of this bench or the modern Adirondack plans that compliment this bench get those links below.

Really comfortable and sturdy bench. My cat passed away earlier this year and I put the bench right next to where I leave her flowers. I’m gonna put some sort of plaque on the bench with her name. It’s gonna be real classy. Thanks 🙏 ❤
just want to let you know, we built this project for my son's eagle scout project, it came out fantastic. we built 8 of them!. and we then donated them to Alafia State Park , here in florida for a primitive camping site. they are currently sitting around a fire ring. they are beautiful and so comfortable!. thanks for the design and instructions.

This is what my son wants to do for his eagle project to donate to an elementary school. How much weight do you think it holds? Did your son seal the wood?

I'm currently looking at putting one of these next to my project. Love to hear from other scouts!
thank you for not using 250,000 bucks worth of festool to get these made! great video and something I can actually make!

I understand your frustration about the cost of tools . It took five years to buy all my tools . One piece at a time . Good luck 👍🏽
I finished my bench today. It looks great. I just want to say it took five years to buy all my tools , miter saw , table saw , router, gig saw .. drills , bits , etc one piece at a time ..
Thank you for your time showing how to do this! I'm a 65 year old female who doesn't know much about carpentry but I can use the tools I need for this. The part I'm grateful for is that you took your time and explained each step. You explained it well enough that I feel confident in trying it for my path I made in the woods behind my cabin. Thank you!!!
Awesome book that gives you step-by-step photos kzread.infoUgkxTNB_zFBSnTo_O1PqfVUwgi7ityw0JlKt and directions to make every day project. I can see myself making a few of these projects and giving them as housewarming and holiday gifts!
I built 2 of these from your original video a year or so ago. These benches are SURPRISINGLY COMFORTABLE and easy to put together. They were made for the girlfriend's birthday to put around the fire pit.
I built the 2x4x8" benches and they are amazing comfortable! Everyone that has sat in them said the angle and lean of the seat and back are perfect and I have to agree! Thank you so much for taking the time and these videos!
Built two of these and they really are as easy as he makes it look. If you build two, then you only need 7 2x6x8' boards. These are very stable and don't tip forward or backward easily and are quite comfortable.
Made one entirely by hand, using a japanese saw. Came out great! Thank you!
Love from Pakistan 🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰 Great work with detail steps
Thanks!! Just made it. Took about 45 minutes for me. Looks perfect!!
Well explained and nicely done DIY project,, i love it,, i like how u use simple tools unlike some videos that says all you need is a simple saw and then brings out tools that some of us never seen before... great video... thanks bro.💯💥👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
I've used the earlier 2x8 video and made a dozen of these benches, but using 2x10 material instead. The benches are very heavy, very sturdy. Thank you!
just built one for our firepit area out of scrap wood I had. super comfy. thanks for the detailed vid!
I’m gonna make one this weekend. I love it .
I went ahead and built one today for my mom for xmas. Thanks for the plans and the great video. The bench came out just perfect!!
I followed the original plans with 2 x 6 boards and just added a 2 x 4 between them. Looks great.
Thanks a bunch!! Just completed my first one and ready to sit in the woods for some Zen time.
I made the 2x8 version and it is just a little too big for my porch so I might give this one a try. Thanks for the speed square lesson too. 😎
Great build. I added arms and built 2 for my porch at the lake house. Very comfortable.
Thank you will be building this weekend.
Just wanted to say thanks. Built this and it turned out great.
Simple elegant and functional. Planning to make some benches this weekend. Thank you.
Made one, love it! Super comfortable!
very cool. i have a ton of left over deck boards from a recent deck project and this will work perfectly
I built this bench over the weekend! It was my first time doing any woodworking (even my first time using a circular saw...)!! Though it's not as precise and perfect as this one in the video, it's a bench! This video was incredibly helpful and so thorough. I learned a lot and now have a bench to enjoy :)
Not a woodworker, but I like watching and imagining. Having never used a speedsqaure, I had no idea it could measure angles beyond 90 and 45. Thanks. I learned something today. 😋
Mate, thats a great build, explained really nicely and in laymans terms, really apprecaite people like you sharing your skillset with others that may be less confident (like me !)

That’s a legit build, Mate! Thank you 🙏
Excited to try this!
Воистину всё гениальное просто, спасибо, молодец!
Thanks for this videos, very well explained 👏
Great project! I will definitely build it. I was looking for something simple and aesthetic at the same time. It's very good, meets my expectations. I'm just thinking about adding backrests/coffee tables.
Jameson. Thanks so much for a great video. Wish I could add pics. We used your general design and made two rough wood pond benches. They turned out great. Totally appreciate you sharing the video.
Awesome video sir, thanks for sharing.
Watched in the morning, but in the afternoon!💃💃 Thanks!!

Just built one of these out of scrap wood from a deck build and stained it Jaycobean semi transparent looks so awesome!
Perfect use for some old weathered but still usable lumber i have sitting around. looking forward to the look on my neighbors faces when they see me sitting on this out front.
Thanks! Great video. simple and cheap
Good video thank you for a good design for a bench
I built one of these using your plan and it came out great and I just wanted you to know that with the two longer leftover pieces I found a way to make arm rests with cup holders. You just cut out a long notch in the middle of each that would wedge into or over top of each long leg and underneath the lower back support cutting an angle in the front portion of the notch to match the angle of the front part of the long leg, then cut out about a 4" hole at the front/center of each arm for a cup holder and then epoxy a shaped piece of thick rubber padding on top of the holes reaching the width of the arm and part of the length and finally cutting a cross slit at the hole location. I did not know how to add a picture of what I did, sorry.

I would love to see pictures!
I built this today. I live in Canada. The materials cost about 70 bucks. The prices of wood are ridiculously high right now. It was super easy to make. Instructions were easy to follow.
What a great job ! Ive got to just get the angles correct nd away we go .
I made one and added arm rests to it. I really like it.
Looks great
awesome thank you for doing this
Love it nice job
Nice instructional!
Nice work
muy buenas ideas, un gran saludo.
Just built my first bench. Using 2×8s Had some problem with long to short point. Had to recut legs. But enjoyed your video. Thanks
Impressive!
excelente trabalho
Definitely didn’t take me just 30 minutes lol. Came out great thoughts thanks.
Very cool, but is it stable? That narrow front-to-rear leg spacing looks as if the bench will tip over backwards if the person seated leaned back against the backrest (which you never did in the video).
@garsonprice3441
22 күн бұрын
Exactly! Looks dangerously unstable for tipping over backwards.
Saved your link for future reference!
Awesome
Made a few Leupold benches over the years.
Nice vid and bench. You got my sub.
Hi, Great video, and i always wondered how to use my speed square, would this work on 1x6 timber?, Newbe to making benches
Great Idea! Love your Friendly approach! I was looking for something where the Pressure treated does not contact your skin. I feel it's worth paying extra for Azek or Trex on the seat and back. I do like the Design. I know it would need support.
Is it feasible to build small benches for children out of 1 x 6 x 8's? The 2 x 8 x 8's are a bit heavy. But, thanks for those plans and I will try the 2 x 6 x 8 bench. And thanks for sharing your knowledge and simplifying building these benches, and all of the other products.
I might try this. Thanks for using basic tools and not saying you can and then just use the fancy tools to do it. Also I would consider using construction adhesive to make it a little stronger, but also making sure I don’t use too much and have it squeeze out.
Simplicity is true beauty. The beauty in nature can be distilled down to something simple.
how about the double chair with table build would love that one.
SHOEE...., YOU DONE IT ,WHERE NO ONE ALSE COULD.
Made one of your benches and LOVE the comfort it provides in my rear yard. I would love one from 2X8" lumber, also. Such enhanced luxury intrigues me. Was I to make one from 2X8" lumber, are the material cuts identical?

This is a cool simple project. How much do they normally sell for?
Looks like a very cool and simple design - BUT, it also looks like if you lean back on the backrest it would flip over because the back legs do not extend past the center of gravity?
@jakengle
11 күн бұрын
Nope. I built two of these and they are very stable. If you sit and push back hard enough to take the front legs off the ground it still does not get over center and fall backward. Very stable.
Hi great video if I want the chair height of 18 inches instead of 14 inches is there enough material in 4 2x6 ?my picnic tables are a little higher than normal
Nice design. Are you using pressure treated wood? What's the right choice for an outdoor build? Thanks!
@rogueengineer
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes this is pressure treated and is perfect for outdoors
Since these seem to be easy to build, there's a temptation to build several at one go. The logical upshot would be to improve the design by having the seat portion pivot upwards toward the backrests, for storage. Go one step further and offer different widths to allow multiple benches to nest, in storage, a bit like Russian dolls.
I remember this bench. I actually used it as a project for my woodwork students. Great video 💯

Thank you!
Do you maybe heave metric measurments?
Great video and plans. Just a imho the back is a little too far back. I made four of these benches and w two of them i put the legs about 2 inches closer and it gives way more back support. Ive had a number of friends over and everyone agrees that the ones with the closer back are more comfortable....but whatever who cares thats the beauty of woodworking make it how ya wanna and enjoy. Thanks !
Jamison, would it be possible to build this bench out of 5/4 pressure treated lumber?
if i wanted to make this bench a little bit longer, say 6', what would be a good way to support the middle better that doesn't look like crap?
Can I use 1x6 to make a single seat chair. Making it half the length with 1x6 will it be strong enough?
that angle at 2.05 you drew. what if the board was shorter so it ends before that angle marker?
Can glue be used as well , exterior of course , but would it help?
@DDKirkpatrick
14 күн бұрын
Yes but I would use construction adhesive but be careful not to use too much or it will squeeze out and you’ll be able to see it.
Cheslin's charge down on the conversion was the game maker. Without that France would have won if it was on target.😮
Would these work, or has anyone tried making this as a chair by just reducing the length of the seat and seat back pieces?
what is the total depth of the bench. i have a narrow landing (40") .. will this give me space to put there and sit down?
I would seem that you’d get sag with a 4’ span?
This is probably a dumb question 🙋♂️ but… how do you get your cuts soooo straight with the circular saw. I have an old circular saw that I have here but my cuts always come out not straight or the cut it self is really wavy not a smooth cut like if the blade is moveing
Will all the angles be the same for a smaller one person bench?
Request for picnic table please.
Ive made 3 of the 2x8 benches from your video and came out great. Price difference in 2x6 and 2x8 arent that much, its like a $2 difference per board. Im guessing all measurements and angles are about the same as the old bench ?
@zedwpd
Жыл бұрын
So each 8 foot board would be an extra $16 and it takes 4 boards so that's a difference of $64.
Does cut 20 degrees go on the flor or above ?
hi ! great job and great video. just worried by units... i'm french and don't understand inch / cm For example, 33" = 83,82cm right ? but what about 24 - 1/2" ?? is it 24,5" = 62,23 cm or 5 3/8" = 5,375" = 13,65cm ? i would love to try :) thanks for all

Yes. Bare in mind as it comes to lumber width, actual size is different than advertised. For example: Two-by-six or 2 x 6 is actually 1 1/2 inches x 5 1/2 inches. There are charts online. So now the question is what are standard lumber sizes in EU :) I am about to find out at Leroy Merlin :p
really good work, i have to convert it in metric , but it comes out really good. thanks
You should always predrill a hole, especially so close to edges to prevent splitting..
Are pit sectionals comfortable?
раскосины надо как по длинне - так как со временем она раскачается, а также связать между собой х-образные ножки, потому что на одних только саморезах они не удержатся долго.
Im confused about whether i should use treated or untreated. Every yells "treated wood only for outdoors" but it would have to sit for 6 months before i could use it. Any thoughts on that? I built 2 of these this weekend out of treated wood and are currently on my front porch. Im afraid to sell them because i don't know how much they will warp while drying.
How much weight will it hold?
Have just noticed why are your measurements and angle cuts different from your PDF Plans that I brought from you?!
Did you use PT wood for this?
looks like it would tip over backward?
