This work was written when Beethoven was 32 years old.
Beethoven named it "Sonata in the Style of Fantasy," but it is now widely known as "Moonlight.
The title "Moonlight" comes from the poet Ludwig Lerstarp's comment, "Like a small boat rocking on the moonlit waves of Lake Lucerne.
The piece was dedicated to Countess Julietta, who was a close friend of Beethoven's at the time (she also appears in the 1994 film "Beethoven's Immortal Love"). Beethoven and Julietta.
Beethoven and Julietta had an irreconcilable difference in circumstances, and Beethoven was troubled by this, as well as his own worsening hearing loss, to the extent that he wrote his will the year after "Moonlight" was composed.
Beethoven's deep, deep suffering, pain, and the bit of hope that he never gave up expressed in the piece. We played the piece with such feelings in mind.
