Using a gray water system doesn't seem any more gross than using animal parts for compost! The worms and bugs will take care and do the work, while the plants will soak up what they need. It's really a beautiful thing if you think about it in the bigger scheme of nature❤

Hey, Kevin I have been following you since I started my 2020 garden during the pandemic. Your channel is a big part of what turned gardening into more than just growing plants for me, but a deeper appreciation for nature, our ecosystem and I even inspired one of my neighbors to start a garden. I know you don’t get personal often which I totally respect but I wanted to let you know that I think a lot of folks will resonate with your experience with burnout and anxiety. Thank you for sharing. It’s been a blast watching your channels grow the last few years. Cheers to the next few!

Around 20:20 you’re talking about your composing system Here’s my question which I’ve never seen actuated. “How do you get the composted matter (the quasi dirt) from bin 1 to bin 2 and bin 2 to bin 3, etc. and if you are continually adding to bin 1, what are you moving over to bin 2? “ I would love it if you could not only explain but show the process please. 😊

I would guess he adds to bin 1 for awhile, then adds to bin 2 while bin 1 breaks down, then adds to bin 3 while bin 2 and 1 break down, etc. When bin 1 is finished, use it and begin the process over again. That’s easier than moving half-finished compost from bin 1 to bin 2.

Regarding the grey water system, one concern is that clothing made of synthetic fibers like polyester (the majority of today's clothing will contain some) degrade over time and release micro plastic particles into the laundry water. The polymers (long and complex chain-like molecules based on carbon) used in clothing are not biodegradable or degrade into harmful products that will get carried away by the laundry water towards your plants. Did you consider this aspect of gray water? I personally wouldn't want to release plastic-bearing laundry water into my soil. In my opinion, that dirty water would be better reused by diverting it into the toilet flush tank. Also, this is a long-term issue that will eventually have some impact on your garden and plants or on your health. In the first years, the effects may not be noticeable, but micro plastics will build up over time in your soil and eventually leak into groundwater resevoirs or end un in your crops.

We have about 5,000 gallons of rainwater tanks but in about 11 big tanks and 3 little ones. We have hooked them up to a laundry to landscape type system (same as our laundry to landscape but not all are connected to the actual laundry). We turn them on for 10 minutes to fill the basins. We use a timer so we won't forget. The tanks then can water our fruit trees in the very hot summer instead of using more city water.

A lot depends on where you live. It doesn’t make a lot of sense in Las Vegas. We get so little rain it’s not enough to collect. An average of 2.5-3” a year. Also all the water that goes into the sewer system gets treated and put back into the lake the water comes from. They get 90% of the water that is used inside.

Kevin, when some of your hens stop laying eggs you should try getting Araucana chickens that lay pastel colored eggs. The colors each hen can lay is one of the following: yellow, pink, brown, blue, green and rarest of all purple. Araucana's either look like the standard American chicken or are fluffy balls of feathers. Their eggs are a little smaller than regular chicken eggs but I love the novelty of the different colored shells and they taste really good! Araucana's have a nice temperament.

    1. It isn't worth collecting rain where I live in CO. 13 inches of precipitation a year. 2. If you don't want to start your own baking channel, maybe bring up doing guest episode on the Farmers Table? (I have no idea if Jess would be receptive to that, but guest episodes would be cool.)

In addition to LOADS of useful information and great visuals on the various elements, your voice is really soothing. Might have to listen listen to your videos in the background during those times I have way too much to do.

I believe the oasis laundry detergent is not only biodegradable but biocompatible which makes it much better for a grey water system.

I like the open air compost no bin then let the chickens break into it in search of the bugs just take a huge heaping pile for them with the fork

I really appreciate that you shared this journey! The great thing about growing your own wheat is that (I assume) is not artificially forced to bolt. A study found that when farmers artificially bolt the wheat to flower all at once, the result is more yield, but there's a skip in the amino acid chain development. This could account for people thinking that they are gluten intolerant might be reacting to the skip.

I was very depressed 2 years ago, a lot happened, the details are personal but I will tell you I lost someone close to me in the pandemic and then my relationship fell through shortly after. I was dangerously depressed for a few months. When at my darkest, by complete dumb luck, I got lost looking for something in the store and wandered into the gardening section and the seeds caught my eye. On impulse I got some potting soil and some seeds that the girl working the garden center said were easy to grow. I went home and planted them, my dog LOVED being outside just hanging out again. The garden did great and it gave me something to focus on, more reason to be alive to be honest. Things turned around pretty quickly after that, my dog and I spent most the spring, summer, and fall outside gardening and doing yard work when I wasn't at work. My dog and I are much happier now, and I am no longer depressed. At my darkest moment I was saved by my dog (who is the best boi btw) and randomly wandering into the garden section at a store. If you are depressed I would suggest giving gardening a go, you just never quite know what is going to help and bring you back from the edge.

Hi Kevin. I’m in Eugene, zone 8B. I have a greenhouse 10x12 and have started heating it with Bunnies. Now hear me out.. they are busy little critters and actually provide a lot of BTUs. I have paver domes on the ground, so they can’t dig out, and have a ton of nooks and cranny’s for them to get into, They get snacks every time I go out and trim and are such delightful little critters. They Self trained to a litter box.
