3 Year Review | 2018 Yamaha Viking VI Ranch Edition

We receive a lot of questions asking if we still like our 2018 Yamaha Viking VI Ranch Edition Side-by-Side. Would I buy it again? YES!!!
It's been 3 years since we purchased our SXS and it has 4,000 miles and 250 hours on the engine. We use the SXS for moving people, hauling cargo, plowing snow and for trail riding. The 2018 Yamaha Viking VI Ranch Edition has been a great machine for us and this video explains why.

I am heavily considering one of these. Do you feel like it has enough power?

Ryan Losey, Yes we do. We have not had issues with the lack of power in various terrain. It is not a sport machine with crazy power but we didn’t expect it to be one when we purchased it. The Viking VI has easily done every job we wanted it to do, including plowing snow. If you plan on packing it full with 4-6 grown adults and trying to climb hills all day, it would have a power issue.

Great video and very helpful information. We found a used 2020 with 5 hours on it from a local dealer and saved about $2000 (no freight, assembly and $700 off list). It is the copper color. We have put a few hours on it, but we absolutely love it. It has plenty of power for us in 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive and tons of room. The copper color is amazing too! Looking forward to many adventures with this. We bought the windshield and added it which we think is a must. Next will be a winch. Definitely recommend the Viking VI.

Awesome find! You’ll be happy you got the windshield. It cuts the wind nicely on cool days. Plus it keeps the rain from blasting you when you need to drive fast.

Considering buying a used 2015 4K, is this a reasonable purchase. Do these machines last, the price is what I feel like a reasonable price. But between the brands I have been researching like Polaris, Can Am, Kawasaki, and Yamaha I feel like everyone hyped up yamahas durability.

Tom, Our 2018 Viking has been incredibly reliable. We have left it stock besides recently replacing tires with an equal sized replacement. The only issue we had was the fan quit working in the first year after 1,000 miles which was replaced under warranty with an updated version and we are at 4,500 miles now with the same fan. The belt is still original along with all other components. Besides regular maintenance to change oil and grease, I changed a valve cover o-ring. When buying a used machine you’ll have to determine if the previous owner has modified any components which could affect the reliability.

I agree, the build quality and durability of my 2018 Viking EPS is excellent overall, although replacing the radiator fan was also something I had to do. I wasn't too impressed with the OEM fan design which actually had a small nipple at the bottom of the motor housing to let water seep out, a really wonky engineering design for an electric induction motor. Because the replacement OEM fan cost close to 500 dollars with the same water problems, I opted for a SPAL hi performance replacement fan for a little more than $300.00, it was built with an aluminum cowling instead of plastic, a water tight fan motor and, although measurably louder when it comes on, is much more effective at cooling the 686 CC engine. Apart from that, the Viking has excellent durability and performance, the engine and CVT drivetrain are a perfect power duo for both yard work or trail riding...

Marc Goudreau when we had the fan issue, the dealer covered it under warranty. I understood they had an updated part to install. We haven’t had an issue since and put on over 3,000 miles on the 2nd fan. We would also look at aftermarket if we had to change out the fan on our dime. Thanks for the tip on a model that worked well for a replacement/upgrade.

How well did it plow snow?

It plows great. It’s just a lot of shifting back and forth if you aren’t pushing the snow in a straight line.

Dirt Trax TV (on KZread) has really good product review videos. If you go to their playlist and scroll down, you’ll see the different brands and can quickly find videos about the ranger or mule. I watched all their videos before deciding on what I was going to buy.

I’m very happy with it only having a few small issues such as the bad fan, breaks that squeak, needed new tires after 4,000 miles and a putting a new valve cover o-ring in. I’ve had friends with other brands of machines and they have many more issues.

Go buy yourself a polaris and then you can make a legitimate comment. The viking and and the Honda Pioneer 700 are bulletproof machines.
