Do you have to be technically perfect to be a GLORY or UFC champion??? Apparently not because Alex Pereira has a number of things he does "wrong" but he still makes it work for himself against the highest level opponents possible. Pereira has talked about his style of kicking without turning the hips, on a brazilian podcast. He said you have to be in a closer range to kick that way, which leaves you more susceptible to counters, so your defense needs to be on point, but also not turning the hips makes returning to your stance much faster, that allows you be ready to counter when the opponent is throwing back. Pretty slick, always ready to counter with that left hook when the opponent is lowering his guard to attack.

He talked about his kick in a podcast in Brazil. He said that kicking this way is less telegraphed and harder to the enemy predict or notice his kick. Izzy was more aggressive this time. He knew the openings would be there. But it’s always dangerous against Pereira. He might be open but he hits so hard.
I think the reason he doesn't have his hands up when he's throwing is because 95% of the time his opponents aren't trying to exchange punches with him because of his power. So when he's throwing, his opponents most of the time are just blocking or evading. This is how adesanya caught him off guard. Mid combo adesanya started firing back and pereira wasn't ready to defend.
Very good. Thanks. Great fight this weekend.
Pereira has achieved remarkable things.. but the third thing you mentioned..not guarding his head as he throws combos…is what caused him to lose. Maybe he’ll tighten that up now?

Great master and nice content !!! I didn't knew your you channel...
Awesome brake down thank you for the edit
In a brazilian podcast he taught that he not pivost because after the strike he doesnt need to set the hips again to be able to strike again. When he is not pivoting he can lands the kick, and when the guy is doing his move(defending or countering) he already can strike right after without the guy expect. He said that the pivoting is used to increase the range of motion too but he has a good defense(he stated that with a bad defense you will get hit in the face because of the small distance ) so he can land in a close distance and use that "window of reaction from advesary" after he lands to attack again.
Gabriel, I'd just like to thank you for these amazing videos. You're truly a kind man for sharing your knowledge and expertise and analysing so many things that help your viewers.

It actually helps him. His opponents see his hands down and go to exchange punches after he throws, which makes them walk into the next punch. Often times he isn’t even punching to do damage, just to get them to move into the next punch, and as they move into the punch it increases the damage.
My old kru actually threw jabs and straights the way Pereira throws that weird scrape style of punch. He said that it works well against people who tower guard you because instead of trying to punch through, you can manipulate their guard and in turn shift where their weight is to land kicks on a fully planted opponent. It's odd, but there's definitely a strategy to it. Pereira never seems to follow up on them though with kicks, I think his range just allows for that stuff and gives him so much leverage to really drop his weight into the shots. Great breakdown!

great points. would love to see more analysis and examples of fighters that don't turn their hips.
Overall: Pereira can get away with a lot due to his physical attributes. standing square, no pivot in the hips when he attacks, and keeping the hands low. Definitely no no in terms of fundamentals but he makes it work and many champions can relate
I knew you were a striking guru. But this is unreal!
very nice informative video, I think it boils down to knowing yourself as a fighter and understanding your physical attributes, I see people saying that flicking jab like fury is good and some saying its not good practice, but if you think about it both statements are true because fury has a very long reach so it works perfectly for him, but for shorter fighters with short reach it could mean getting sent to the shadow realm.

Not pivoting when you kick is an adaptation for mma I've seen a few other fighters do to reduce the risk of getting taken down.
excelente análisis, eso fue lo que paso, like.
This was spot on! He got countered by Adesanya, due to Pereira's inexistent guard.
It is possible that he uses the opening on the cross for his own left hook counter and he is aware of a left hook counter coming and uses his reach to pull back into his own hook and bait the opponent
Met a ONE mma fighter in my country where we had some mma talks. Asked about pereira since he’s my favorite fighter, he told me he wouldnt teach what he does to a beginner since his style and even the way he lead hooks is really risky for a counter. He believes the only reason it works is he’s a 6’4 genetic freak and he has confidence from his combat experience.
I think pereira's open style is a result of training in MMA. Hands down while punching and not pivoting kicks is better for takedown defense. He probably wants to bait his opponents into the kickboxing game while avoiding the ground game at any cost.

On thing about not pivoting much on your supporting peg for roundhouse that is a bit of an advantage is that you don't have to commit your hip as much and can follow up with punches or even another kick (like Liam Harrison) easier. There is maximum power and then there is enough power to be effective and take advantage of strategies it offers.
Not turning his hips fits his style (+aforementioned comment on podcast) as well, because he doesn't feint. It makes his kicks less telegraphed.

@@roflswamp6 what about this time
Definitely! It's a style catered to his body frame. Tall, long legs/arms, and a short torso. I have a similar frame. Pivoting isn't really necessary for me to land with power. Because of my speed and the weight of my leg, every kick lands with enough power to do damage. Also keeps me in and attacking position too. The second my foot touches the ground again, I'm ready to continue a chained attack. When you pivot and kick you're almost forced to reset. On the flip side, pivoting can open up more angles if you're side stepping; However, I find at my size (heavyweight), it just takes too long and it's too choregraphed and easy to identify when I'm pivoting and kicking. When you're tall, you almost can't see a calf kick, it's almost completely out of your field of view. So if I'm not bee lining off center, ducking my head off the centerline, my opponent never sees it coming. I think that's what makes Alex's calf kick so deadly, his opponents really can't see it unless he misses lol. Even if you do make a read, you can't tell if it's going to be a teap, inner thigh/calf, or outer leg kick. I've never been ballsy enough to try fighting without guarding my face with my off hand. I think if I was a good as Poatan, I would try. I imagine you'd have to be so incredibly educated on positioning to pull that off. I'm not that guy 🤣
3:57 is the reason he lost the 2nd fight, so great job catching it! He just throws his combos with his guard down, fully exposed. It makes the punches harder to anticipate, and maybe adds power, but he has no guard... and he payed for it dearly last Saturday.
Not totally similar but he shares some similarities in style to Masato from K-1 Max days. Masato also low kicked upwards without turning the hip and didn’t rely much on head movement. Maybe this is just a suitable style for a fighter who’s risk/reward favors them simply landing punches over avoding punches or landing harder legkicks. Staying upright and not turning over the hips seems to allow both hands to be in position to fire at all times.
The Adesanya video is tops. Executing Gabriel's recommendations would boost Adesanya's confidence up big time. He looks a bit too tense and serious. Taking this rematch too soon.
About the kick: you change power for speed and lower the telegraphy of kick, the higher you are to kick the harder is to notice the kick coming. He might have maximized this kick, like crocop maximized the same kick in another way, or even Andy hug and his impressive kicks.
Well….it seems you predicted his downfall 😅 Izzy must’ve watched this video

I was also thinking about it.
Trevor wittman did a good explanation of rolling the knuckles in a punch. It's not to bring opponents'heads down. From what I recall he explains that the rolling motion of the knuckles just significantly increases the effective force of a punch. To that I will personally add, that the diagonal+downward motion of a backhand punch makes the most of a shift of mass in the body from rear to front foot, from rotation of the torso and from the rear shoulder rocking over the body. It's difficult to describe but you know it when you see or do it.

Thomas Hearns had a terrifying chopping right that considered one of the best in the boxing world. If he's throwing a cross wrong, I'd just make sure he's not around to hear me say that.
Ive always realised his kicks too even since Glory days, but i guess he does not pivot so that he can be stable and come back with the left hook. He does it time and time again to lure opponents to his left hook after throwing that kick. Ive actually tried it in sparring before, and it works😅

Attributes like power. chin/durability, height, and reach allow you to break the rules and still be successful. I love personal styles that break the rules to maximize the use of ones natural attributes. (except styles built on taking serious damage to win).
i do throw the cross as pereira does especially when im going to circle out to the lead foot with active lead hand guard. this reduces the lead hook counter's potential energy immediately as you're moving with it, also giving you more of a time barrier to respond to the shot and pick it off. I come from boxing and have only recently transistioned to kickboxing/mma so maybe i'll get headkicked for this down the road but hey ho, live and learn.😁
1- In his kicks he doesnt pivot so he mantains his stance anda balace wich is vital in his game. He trows and defends everything from the sams position. 2- He does throw that right like some great boxers. Naoya inoue for example can throw it both ways. He usually uses this tecnique to follow with a bodyshot 3- He doesnt come back with his hands because it makes his punches more powerfull and because almost slways moves his head out of the line so he does not get countered. Watch the knockout vs belagaury ( his traing partner now)
You should have told him this before he got into the ring with Izzy 😂😂
The not defending his head thing became quite notable after Adesanya exploited it and even Strickland picked up on it during their training sessions together, but the not pivoting while kicking always threw me off when I watched his IG stories. I was like, is he just doing it this way during shadowboxing? No, this is just how he kicks. Strange, doesn't work for me, but I'm not a former UFC and multiple division Glory champion.
I think, intentionally or not, the sum of these parts work well together. Punches coming from low, no foot pivot, turning over hooks: they all have similar benefits and drawbacks. You're essentially trading really wide, vulnerable openings for unpredictability and power. The gambit is that you are using your length, speed, and power to mitigate their willingness and ability to counter. When you hesitate or try to back out while he stalks, you get torched with kicks on the outside. You have to have tremendous natural gifts to cover for the drawbacks, but Pereira is a goliath of a man with a granite chin so...check. Damn, I'm so pumped for this fight! I can't wait. My only prediction is violence.
Really hope Perreira does it again - what a beast that man is!
Good analysis considering your third point was his downfall last night.
Well he just paid the price of not having a tight boxing guard and got knocked out! Perhaps he’ll work on tightening up his guard from now on…
“This dude does not guide his head while striking.” That’s how he got slept 😴 💤
I like how he says its not wrong but he wouldn’t teach it but also wouldn’t change it because it works for him that’s a good coaching point.
Without seeing the video yet, i bet on this weird cross he throws that generates so much freakin power!!
The other odd thing is he looks like Frankenstein when he's fighting.
The fact he doesn’t pivot is why he doesn’t telegraph his kicks at all. One of the reasons why I think he continuously landed the leg kicks on Israel. He most probably would generate more power with more “traditional technique” but it’s a trade off of a little power to have 0 telegraph 🤷🏻♂️. Great video as always 🙏
4:36 When the exchange is not won.
I noticed in some footage of him throwing the spin hook kick, he lands with the outside of his ankle/lower leg. not turned over to the heel. Which must absolutely destroy the ankle. That's not as funky as that planted foot though wow! Bad for the hips.
Izzy won the fight by exploiting the finishing combo vulnerabilities you noted here. Well played.
2:06 holy carp that sent him flying 😭 but on a side note I actually bought Alex pereira’s instructional and in it he explains why he kicks like that .
