3 WAYS TO USE SPRING DANDELIONS ~ FORAGING

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The health benefits of dandelion include relief from liver disorders, diabetes, urinary disorders, acne, jaundice, cancer, and anemia. It also helps in maintaining bone health, skin care, and weight loss. All these health benefits are currently being studied for complete validation by a number of international institutions.
Despite the health benefits of dandelions, they are traditionally more popular as ornamental flowering plants than as medicine, because the flowers look brilliant and are frequently seen in gardens and parks. There are many varieties of dandelion, but the common one is scientifically known as Taraxacum officinale.

About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

A little tip > don't throw out the water/vinegar mix after soaking the dandelions. Or, after soaking anything, for that matter. Use it to water your acid loving plants or, pour it into your compost. Remember, waste nothing!

Love dandelions! I make jelly, salve, vinegar, infused oil, tea, tincture and wine! People laugh at me all the time for picking them. I have them in my yard, but I also plant them in pots as well. I dry the leaves and keep them in mason jars and use them all year round in my morning smoothie! Thank you for the video, I feel lonely in the dandelion world. I try to tell people how healthy they are but they think I'm nuts. Thank you Doug and Stacy!

I don't know why I never thought to grow some in pots. Every spring I search my yard for them, but my soil here doesn't grow them. When we first moved in, it wouldn't hardly grow grass either. Nearly 25 years later, I've got many plants, but still no dandelions. (I've even harvested seeds from other places in hopes they'll take root. Hubby just shakes his head.)

@@carolynlyles9681 You make chop the leaves and boil them in as little water as you can. After they turn darker green remove and strain (don't discard the water). Mash the leaves and place in the middle of a clean cloth that you don't otherwise care about. Because it'll be stained green. Gather up the sides and bind them so you have a sack with the greens in it. Bring that water back to being hot. Then remove it from the heat and set your cloth sack in it. When the temperature is bearable pull the sack out and wring it out so it just moist. It's ready to be placed on the needed area. Keep it moist and warm. The area will seem to get worse before it releases. The heat and the greens seem to work together to make it infection release and heal up faster. For the sake of all of the legal stuff, I make no claims about this on another person. It has worked for me. Use at your own risk. I made Dandelion tea with my Grandkids last time they were out and not only did we have a BLAST collecting the flowers, but it was a great way to share a bit of what I enjoy with them, and most important teach them that not everything they eat needs to come from a Market. They tried to pretend they liked it to keep Grammy happy, but in the end apologized and said they really didn't like it but didn't want me to feel bad!🤣🤣🤣 I on the other hand, discovered that I loved the recipe we threw together! This video has given me a new recipe to make with them. (If they are willing after their dislike of the tea🤣 y'all are great! Glad I found this channel!

I've been into Wild Lettuce for pain relief since last year. EDIT; Mike REED (not green)has great videos on its use, and a recipe for a WL omelet. I found whole villages of it on the hwy right of ways, but this spring I noticed it all over our yard! But be Sure that it hasn't been Sprayed! If left alone, it can grow to six or seven feet tall. But when mowed, it grows closer to the ground and only has the one stalk. Wild Lettuce and Dandelions are cousins, and look like brother and sister. Wild Lettuce has leaves that appear serrated, where Dandelions leaves have fairly straight edges. The blooms of each are yellow, and are very hard to tell apart. WL, or Prickly Lettuce has hairs or soft bristles under the stems when it gets mature. KNOW what you are eating. The whole WL plant can be utilized, but the milky substance that appears when a stem is broken is Lacticarium, and this is a natural pain reliever that some say is more powerful than Morphine! I grind up the whole plant (not fine) and barely cover with water. Keep under 200 degrees, and simmer (I use an old crock pot that only gets 195) for a few hours covered. Then I drain off and mix while still warm with coconut oil, for a tincture. It aborbs quickly on the skin, and gives a few good hours of relief from back pain.

It was excellent as long as you appreciate a little "bitter" , which is so good to help detox this time of year. I have learned to keep the dandelions I plan to eat cut down and eat the small young ones as they grow back - they are milder.

Dandelions grow in abundance where I live in Portland OR. I hate the fact that I’ve always been told that dandelions were just weeds that need to be pulled and tossed. But I’m grateful that I’m discovering this information out now though. And how easy are these recipes! Thank you for the info!

i live Salem and i agree. Same with mushrooms, always told they were poison, WRONG. But i started educating myself in wild edibles. There are so many wild edibles here in the pacific northwest. I fell in love with my state again. Funny note, i was also told Oregon grape was poison... WRONG. I started to think of all the false information we were fed as kids. Mainly from grownups who had no idea how to answer the question so they tell us whatever , alot of false info( know it all ) LOL. But we can change by teaching the old ways to the young. I love to educate on wild edibles. The look on peoples faces when you say , yes you can eat that and it's Delicious! Blows people away.

Do you get ‘Rose hips’-they are one of the super foods that are so high in vitamin C, I make this for friend’s chicken as it’s great to prevent the various bugs kiddies pick up. Another one I make is elder flower syrup and wine. I adore the beautiful pottery dishes you use. I will be on the lookout for more of your videos. Best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪

Putting far more thought into the natural ways and God-given abilities to shine our lights and better help ourselves so we're able to share and help others. Abusing earthly conveniences can easily bring about much complacency in our lives. Anything requiring sweat , muscle and a bit of elbow grease we sometimes quickly say pass and on to the next quick and easy thing in line. She was known well around Salem MO for that wine back in the day. Loved this video! I moved to an elderly complex where we're allowed to plant gardens. The whole property has medicinal plants for me to forage and no, they don't use pesticides or fertilizers. We have lots of dandelions, Usnea, Wild Lettuce, Wild Spinach and a huge Forsythia bush right outside my first floor window (yes, I'm 64 but I can still climb out my window lol) I was able to get lots of Forsythia flowers, roots and bark to make my own Chinese herbal medicine. I'd love a recipe to make a dandelion tincture too. I love to suck on and chew the stem. I guess that comes from making curly cues on the stalk as a kid. I'm sure there's more plants on this property that are medicinal and I need to figure out which ones are. We have a little park with benches with an island in the middle full of trees, flowering bushes, with lots of wild plants growing.

Great video and I will share it to put light on these Blessings, because a lot of people think they're weeds and don't realize what they are digging up and wasting! I always drink dandelion tea, I love it, it's so good for us, and it's good to the let people know how medicinal and healthy these beautiful flowers are for us!! God's Blessings 🙏💫☀️🙆🌎 Thanks for all you do!! Love and Light 💖🙋✨💫☀️ Namaste

Just found your videos today this is my second one. So thankful that you record these unique ways so that I can learn and start doing what you’re teaching. I’ve share the first video already to several people and will do this one as well. Keep up the good work because it’s so needed. 😊

Thanks for your recipe Stacy. The first time I was taught to picking up dandelions and turning it into a tea, was through a friend in 1996, who saw I was feeling sick, and after drinking it, I recovered quickly within days. To this day, I eat dandelion salads and also add it to my soups. 😇
