Especially since right now there's no actual democracy. Elected officials need funding, so they will get it from rich investors (whom have influence through their controlled medias etc) who will then make them enforce the laws they want as it's been for the past 100 years and more. For instance, bacon, eggs and orange juice is not the "traditional American" breakfast. Edward Bernays (the father of propaganda) brainwashed the population only because rich capitalists wanted to sell their products. Also, 100+ years ago the richest used to get taxed 96% of their profits above a certain threshold. Now it's barely 30% (without taking into account all the tax evasion loopholes that they abuse nowadays)

While this idea sounds really nice, it cannot work properly in practice unless the citizens are well educated, they are well versed in critical thinking and at the same time the outlets where information/news are coming from need to be unbiased. How do we achieve all of these?

Many people are incredibly worried about how the citizenry will cope with the responsibility, but when you look around, I think you'll find that most of the world's problems are caused by highly capable individuals. Think of the Australian rock shelter blown up last year. Evidence of many thousands of years of aboriginal habitation were lost to an explosion, making room for the extension of a mine. Even if you completely eliminated aboriginals from the decision making progress I have a feeling the vote would still be unanimous in favor of preservation. You don't have to be that well educated to make good choices.

Democracy cannot work without an element of meritocracy (such as the UK Civil Service manned by the qualified experts in any field to guide the population and politicians). The most dangerous failing of democracy in the C21 is that there is now no direct link between the 'popular' and the 'best'.

The biggest problem with democracy is trust. To trust you must know. To know you must have information. ACCURATE information. Sadly disinformation is the more popular one to media and internet. About the get togethers of the 100 people reflecting a people perfectly: Even if said council may consist of a composition equal to the distribution of the groups with those traits in a community/district, thereby making said composition representative of the community as a whole, this does not imply that the outcome of the work this council would provide to the community would be fair. We cannot suppose that majorities, which are almost inevitable, will choose to vote in favour of moral standards instead of those favouring themselves (those often collide). Which in turn would inevitably collude in segregation caused by majorities bettering their lifes henceforth causing impoverishment, as well as therewith coherent hierarchy, thereby diminishing every positive effect caused by such a proposal. In order to be able to make this work, clever regulation, determining how much of the council should be made up of certain groups due to many effects such as raw percentage representation in the community, good will/ Bad will against other groups (especially minorities), predicted suppression of others (determined by group size and other factors), etc., would have to be brought forth. In general though, determining who should have a say seems almost impossible to be fair in such a constellation

I believe that a change can occur but still needs a lot of improvement when it comes in including people in political decision-making. Still the ideas are not bad, but again there are certain gaps that we need to fill : 1- Commission Assembly composed of 100 people it is not a bad idea but again not every time a majority is right, and again every individual in that commission represent himself and not the people, and an idea can be appropriate for one group of people but not for the others. Again i believe that it will form a divergence.

Speaking of technologies used to help people discuss their opinions... how can we make sure they won't be used to manipulate people instead of letting them freely express their own opinion? I believe recent facts did not help us to trust in the right usage of such technologies... I won't trust a technology designed to make sure 80% of people agree together at the end of the process!!! From my personnal point of view this sounds like the contrary of being free to have any opinion, that may be, at times, different. Democracy is not to make sure people agree, it's to make sure everyone is heard and that every point of view is taken into account in the making of important decisions.

The suggestion of assemblies by 100 is applying market focus group to deciding -- not creating, on public policy. Likewise, with suggestion #3. Online, public participation is just widening the focus group size. Suggestion #2 is re-inventing the wheel. Or at least in the US, we elect representatives -- what makes the US a republic, who caucus and decide for the general population. A budget is comprised of all things thought the government must spend money on. If anything else is to be added -- only added, never replace, is introduced by lobbiest and elected officials. Conflict arises because there is disagreement on spending some portion of the money on that addition or some specific thing. By example, in the US, leaving aside how there is some dishonesty in what goes into a bill, huge political debates on amounts or whether or not that amount should be spent on X vs Y. In some respects, we see it as extension of the family. Makes little sense for the children's input on family budget because they do not have the experience or education on wise budgeting and how best to spend money. Likewise, some parents. Kids would want dinner money for ice cream and MacDonald's every night but sage parents know that is bad idea and kids need a balance diet.

Those ideas in my view are more used to make people feel like they are participating without letting them participate in anything important. I like the ideas and they are ok, but they won't fix democracy. I observe a lot of those ideas in countries like Poland where I live where you've got all the local initiatives and you are giving local communities a sense of participation and decision making power, but that has no impact on the democracy going down in the country. For example you give citizens 1mln $ to decide what they would like to have, but at the same time you are pushing billions on propaganda that is killing democracy. Democracy is working fine on a local level in many places, even if we are talking about big cities or small countries, but the current global issue is democracy not working on big stages like European Union, USA, etc.

Reminder : PROCLAMATION OF THE FIRST DIRECT DEMOCRACY OF FRANCE, JULY 14, 2019 IN PARIS The people have the natural right to form or abolish any government for the purpose of ensuring their own security and sustainability. On this July 14, 2019, National Day, We, the people of France, once again declare our inalienable sovereignty. With constancy and obstinacy, the people of France, with or without a vest, denounced the corruption of the republic and the illegitimacy of this false representative democracy. Access to information, induced by the advent of modern communication technologies, allowed us to make a lucid observation of the uselessness and even of the harmful character of the political representation set up as a system, almost always concussionnary, subservient to the big world bank and the military-industrial complex which enslave the peoples of the whole world. Everyone has the right to speak for themselves. Collective decision-making through citizen structures freed from the republican yoke can now be achieved. We hereby declare that we have the right to do so in every corner of France, in our districts, our municipalities, our cities and our provinces. In order to restore the destiny and sovereignty of the French people, we hereby proclaim the first direct democracy in France and we invite all the citizens of France who love justice and freedom to meet in constituent assemblies, new institutions which will see the light of day soon in each province of France. Everyone can thus bring their own skills and expertise to the established democratic structure in order to determine together the rules of our mutual ties. We will not go back. The lowest gold woman was still above the highest silver person, man or woman. The lowest silver person can't vote but is still above the highest copper person. Go look at rich women in India. Compare them to poor men. That is the truth, divide people by rich and poor, not men and women, to see the simple truth.

The lowest of copper people was still above the highest slave. Women often were the slave masters, along with their eldest son. Women inherited the land of their dead husband and were expected to pass it to their eldest son, who in turn is expected to take care of the entire family with that land. Can't be a gold person without land and a status given to family clans for special activities granted by that same democracy.

You cannot have Democracy, with big populations. So you cannot have it in modern countries. The Athenians that invented it, were probably hundreds of thousands of people. Not millions. In democracy, in order to participate properly in the polis affairs, the politics of the state, you have to be able to be head of the state, no matter your profession, wealth, or social status. This is impossible in modern times. No one would let a garbage collector or a former prostitute, become head of a state, even if they were adequately educated and good in politics, and good to govern. In ancient Athens, you could be voted to head of the state if you could persuade the crowd with your speech, at the Agora. But even there, some inhabitants in Athens, didn't have civilian status and rights. Like the slaves they had from other Greek City States. Democracy, though, is not the best way to govern. It's just the better of what is uvailable so far. We just need to try to excersise it the real way. As it was intended. With real participation of everyone that is a citizen in a country. Not every 4 or 5 years, as the speaker said.

Is Rex confused offering Canada and its authoritarian laws in cimoelled speech as an example of improving democracy? How does Rex validate citing Brazil, renown for its top to bottom political corruprion that includes bribery, embezzlement, nepotism, cronyism, clientilism et al, as an example of improving democracy. I'm may be mistaken, but is Rex blind to the 21st century's technology trends in communication that have actually hastened the erosion of personal freedoms and democracy in favour of a techno based form of totalitarian rule?

Rex will never see the techno-fascist totalitarian utopia coming, he's busy spitballing about democracy (mob rule) while the liberals, world over, are pushing stake-holder capitalism which is thinly disguised fascism since the stakeholders are not we the common plebs, but the artificial persons that are Corporations, NGO's and Charities and they are telling the governments how to legislate.
