You should watch Columbo, each episode has a person seen killing someone onscreen as the detective (Lt. Columbo) try to figure out how the person committed the murder

The #2 was used masterfully (heh) several times on DOCTOR WHO, mostly involving the Doctor's archnemesis The Master. The #3 was also used in Agatha Christie's POIROT'S CHRISTMAS.

Great video, Jane! I personally like the old/former-mentor-turned-villain plot line as it also has that added layer of betrayal for the protagonist (bonus points if it's already been established that the protagonist fears being betrayed). This allows us to see the protagonist transform from naïve to determined, resolving to bring the villain justice, once and for all. It's also a great opportunity to showcase character growth as the protagonist has a relationship with this person, they're not an evil stranger, there's backstory and history there; emotions are probably running high and the protagonist can even choose to look the other way, which demonstrates their character. Love this trope, thanks for the tips!

Which pov should be used to hide a villain's motive from readers and main characters? 1st person (deep pov) or third person. I had written third person omniscient once , but it wasn't my favorite. On the other hand , 1st person comes naturally to me.

  • @janekalmes

I love first person! And it’s probably the easiest in which to hide the villain’s motive. But really, any POV can work. I’d suggest reading Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz, and pay attention to how he alludes to the characters’ secrets without actually revealing them.

Another great video! My book is using the double identity. I think my question would be what point of the story is it okay for the reader to piece together that their is a double identity? Should it be the same time as the main character or before them? I am thinking for mine I want the reader and character to discover it at the same time but I also want to lay clues in but scared the clues will make it to obvious.

I think the plan you’ve set out-find out out at the same time as the protagonist, but with clues beforehand-is the ideal one. We often have a horror or readers guessing our ending, but the fact is, some will-and feeling validated in their deduction, when you reveal it, is a good experience for those clever readers. On the other hand, feeling like the ending doesn’t add up, because no clues were given, isn’t a good experience for anybody. I hope that makes sense. I’ve been thinking about your comment all day, and I hope to make a video exploring this in more detail. thanks for the inspiration!

@@janekalmes Sorry for the headache 😄 🤣 But yeah what you are saying makes perfect sense. I think it is like you say some people will be clever and guess the ending it is just about fooling the masses and having the clues their that will be obvious on a second watch but only spotted by the more observant on the first read.

can you make a video on 'possible motivations for villains to commit crimes'? I mean some villains have twisted worldviews. Sometimes they end up into someone they fear the most
