3 Ways to Get Bees Out of a Honey Super | How to Harvest Honey | Beekeeping for Beginners

Ғылым және технология

Before you harvest your frames of honey, you have to get them out of the beehive and the bees off of the frames. Here are three ways you can get bees out of your honey super, so you can harvest your honey.
• Option 1 - Frame by frame with a feather or blower
• Option 2 - Bee Escape
• Option 3 - Fume Board
The recommended method for hobbyists with 3 or fewer hives is to remove the frames one-by-one and get the bees off using a feather. Using an escape board or the fume board will not remove all of the bees. If you are bringing the supers into your house, this can cause more hassle than it's worth when you have 3 or 4 bees flying around your kitchen.

    EDIT! Fischer's Bee Quik does not have bitter almond oil in it. According to the man who distributes this product, it has to be very warm outside in order for this product to work well. There are tools you can use to blow air into the hive and distribute the scent but, in my opinion, it is quite annoying to do and not recommended.

    Last year the fume board worked great. I put the medium super in a freezer to deal with the extra bees, which was like 5. This year I haven't had luck with it working. Too late in the day, too cloudy of a day, etc.

    Hi, I'm Jim Fischer, and I make Bee-Quick. First, no, it is not "almond essential oil". I've distilled it from about a dozen certified-organic ingredients since 1998. Second, while spraying it on an outer cover might work in Hawaii heat, a beekeeper in a less tropical climate will need a real fume board with cloth in contact with metal, as per the extremely detailed instructions on every bottle. If you email me your address, I send you some of the legit product to try.

    great video, that elaborates on the pluses and negatives. thank you. I have been using a bee excluder and giving it a few days (3-4), but the one at a time shake and feather might be better for two suppers, where only about half are ready to go.

    love the use of a feather instead of a brush, :( other methods look quite brutal, but suppose if you have loads to do :( no surprise your wearing full suit in this video. good things happen with patience, time and a spoonful of love

  • @BeekeepingMadeSimple

    @BeekeepingMadeSimple

    You really have to wear a full suit when harvesting or you'll have honey all over your clothes. Shaking bees off a frame might look brutal, but the bees don't get too upset by it. The best way to judge is 1) by their buzzing. If they're flying at you and buzzing loudly, you did something wrong. The other way is by how they treat you the next time you open the hive. If you're too rough with the bees or annoying them too much during a harvest, they won't be nice to you the next time you visit them. That's why I like to wear a t-shirt and no gloves during my inspections. It keeps me honest :)

    I have some bridging between the frames in the super. Is it going to make a sticky mess to separate them? Should I take out two together hooked by the wax?

  • @BeekeepingMadeSimple

    @BeekeepingMadeSimple

    9 ай бұрын

    It will make a sticky mess if they're full of honey, but you're going to have to do it eventually. Better sooner than later. First, smoke the frames as much as you can while they're still inside the box and then try to take it out connected and cit it apart and reattach with rubber bands. I have a video about this here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hYuAtbWJlJm4Yso.htmlsi=SDXvzUsZXqClSRT-

    Thank you, this is my fifth year of beekeeping, last year I had a terrible time with robbing of the supers I pulled for extraction. The black bag idea is good, but I want to know a method that does not use plastic or one that has reusable materials. Canvas cloth?

  • @BeekeepingMadeSimple

    @BeekeepingMadeSimple

    If you have just a hive or two, there is a company that sells bins that hold frames for this purpose. Some beekeeping supply sites have them. It might be called the hive butler? In my case, using a reusable container for every super would be incredibly expensive and I don't have the space to store something so large that I use just a few days out of the year. I wouldn't use something fabric. Sometimes the boxes leak. Fabric soaked in honey gets pretty stiff and gross. Honey does not wash easily. Hot water helps, but it still leaves a residue. When I harvest honey for one client, they have just 4 hives so I put the supers in a cart. I don't use trash bags. It gets wheeled to the kitchen immediately. The bags are really only necessary to save my car's interior and because I'm in a yard of 20 hives, so there's a lot more bees flying around.

    @@BeekeepingMadeSimple Thank you. I bought black plastic cement mixing trays/tubs from a local hardware store (*/-$7 each), the supers fit in them perfectly, they have a nice edge for lifting. I like them because I can put the extracted super inside one and another on top, and then I put them in my car like you did. The trays also collected any honey that dripped down from the extracted super, they are washable, stackable, and reusable. I also changed to Glory Bee instead of the traditional fume board liquid and the bees left immediately. I really liked your video and thanks to you, this year's extraction went perfectly. Mahalo!

    @@BeekeepingMadeSimple yea I like the escape idea along with a little smoke..like a little puff 4 x a day or so. Some seem to like the vape method …if I suprisingly don’t fail and give up…I may try vape along with escape…which I’ve never noticed anyone do. I doubt I’ll let you know. Only way to know is keeping an eye on my channel. ..sorry I have no friends other than me…& I’m far from even trying to have an other.
