great video very helpful on options for gear ....if i have a stereo-2 channel mono- linkable piece of gear,- can i still use ts cable to connect to a patchbay and then to an insert, or do i have to go from insert to gear -to patch ..ie using mixer phantom power will it pass through signal chain on cables TS or TRS ???

Thanks for the video. I recently got a behringer compressor for 20 bucks off fb marketplace. This is my first peice of outboard gear. My interface is a sterling harmony h224 and does not have an insert port, so I am going the pre amp route. Found a presonus tube pre on reverb for 50 bucks. My question is, when going from amp to compressor and compressor to interface, are you using unbalanced or balanced trs cables ? Thank you

Subbed! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us that are not so smart! Question- In 2nd example, you connect the return to the mic/line-in. This way, the compressor effect only affects channel strip, NOT the stereo bus (all channels), correct? I asked this similar question on another one of your videos. (Behringer 1622FX Pro with dual mono inserts on back)

Yes exactly. Some mixerslike the Allen & Heath will have an insert for the stereo bus and main output, but not for smaller mixers like this.

Are you okay using an interface? It's REALLY easy to connect a Volt276 or 4th Gen Scarlett 2i2 to your phone now.

All kidding aside, resourcefulness is very much required for beginning content creators. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to record myself playing a solo over a backing track. I keep running into obstacles. I'm confident I can do it with the gear I have(tascam x8, shure beta57a, UA Ruby, Samsung smartphone) My last attempt I came to the conclusion that Spotify is blocking the system audio from being recorded on my camera app. Im gonna have to incorporate a separate phone and play the backing track through my orange combo amp and mic it up

@@kettnercreativeyeah I have a tascam portacapture x8 that can be used as a interface. I also have a audient sono. I think I can use the x8 without using the interface function because it has a ext.3.5mm input that can be recorded to an individual track. It also has a 3.5mm camera output. Using my phones screenpal camera app. I've been able to run 3.5mm from x8 to phone and the camera app records video and the audio from the x8 instead of the phones mic. My main challenge has been with recording my guitar over the backing track from Spotify. I'm gonna try using my wife's phone to play the backing track through my orange crush combo amp/ mic the amp with shure beta57a then plug my guitar into ua ruby/ ruby out directly to x8. I'm gonna go set it up right now and see how it goes. I'm playing the solo on the Beatles song "something"

@@kettnercreativethank you for taking time out of your day to respond. I can't begin to express how much valuable knowledge I've learned from your channel. I didn't know anything about audio recording or audio gear a year ago. Everything from audio signals to connecting various audio components, how interfaces work etc. Thank you. When it comes to offering value your videos are all meat and potatoes with no filler.

@@michaelmay9059 Thanks for the comment. That's been my idea from the start. No filler. I try to include stuff that I think is relevant, but I try to stick to the point. I think in the new year (I know, a long way away), we're going to be doing more stuff with instruments (Keyboard, Guitar, Bass, etc.).
