So do I - so let me share with you three simple tips you can use to record your next EP and make sure it sounds its best and connects with your fans.
As someone who releases an EP every single year as an independent artist I've figured out three things that go a long way to delivering something awesome.

Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine both took 22 years to release their last albums. I don't think they bothered to set a deadline. Best EP of all time IMO: Tremolo by My Bloody Valentine.
Graham has a good point, releasing stuff is more important than big projects. Even mainstream artists release their albums single by singe. If you want to release an EP, release it after you've released most of the songs on it as singles, that way you can keep steam running, a song a month etc etc gives you something to promote and fresh content for your followers.

Couldn't agree more homie! 👌👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Graham for your knowledge and encouragement! The biggest problem with releasing music is getting it the promotion it needs to get through to its audience... FINDING the audience. Is this a subject you have or would address?
thanks s lot😊 got my inspiration. will work on a new EP much love♡
Great you mentioned Cake! I'm a fan for years, great songs!
Short skirt and a loooonnnnnnnnnngggggg.... jacket! Great video, Graham!
Hey I just wanted to say I've been following your advice about announcing future EP release date's since I saw you mention it in a New Year's resolution vid a couple years ago and it's worked wonders! I went from a perpetual planner to actually getting my EP's out for release, thanks!
Great video and very timely for me - as I'm finishing up Track #6 of 6 on my current EP for release in December. Schedule, Sound, Something New: great advice. I was actually planning on releasing a 12-track album next year (which I've traditionally done) - but got to thinking about the annual vs bi-annual issue as you mentioned and had the courage to finally draw a line and call it good with an EP this year. It's also freeing because you can now re-rack and start a whole new project the first of the year. That excitement and anticipation really gets me going and keeps me fresh. And thanks for the offer - I'm signed up!
Love the inspiration - Thanks again Graham!
Great comments and tips! These days so many people I work with are building their socials along with their music, and for them I find it's better to focus on pushing out singles. So as you mentioned a possibility of another video devoted to that, I would love to see it!
Wow, these points are exactly - I mean, exactly, the issues I’ve been dealing with for a few months. Your three video points make it all clear to me. 90 days? It’s going on my calendar today!
Thanks man. Keep it up, what you do is super helpful
Great video Graham! All of your tips for releasing an EP are very helpful! I'm hoping to release a new EP by the new year but its been a struggle to schedule myself to finish it. Hopefully I can start building momentum. Thanks Graham!
Graham, such good info. You rock!
Great video Graham! Even though I put out more lo-fi music, your videos still have made an impact on how I approach recording and mixing. Thank you!
"Better to sound new than to sound good." I kinda agree with this. I understand that sounding new will get people's attention, but if it doesn't sound good, you won't have their attention for very long. I think what Dave really meant was "Better to sound new than just trying to be better than everyone else." Being better technique-wise doesn't necessarily make your song better, since there's millions of great musicians out there. What matters is the song: Is it catchy? Is it memorable? Does it have something unique that makes you keep listening to it? But just making it sound different, or "new", won't keep people listening either.
Thank you for this! It's needed! 🙏🏽
Thanks for the amazing video! I can NOT wait to drop my first EP!
Thankyou so much bro! I can't wait until the classes. God bless!

Keep making music and enjoying yourselves everybody 😊 Thank you Graham, this is a great video that comes at the right time for me..
Great video bro. Lots of helpful content in here🤘🏻
thank you for this video, helped me set my mind on fewer songs.
K i havent even finished the video n i love tip number 1; about Scheduling it (Keeping a date to it) already gave me structure of how i will go about it... I believe the only way to be coherent is knowing what ur EP/LP will be about, planning is important n although ur songs will be different but they should link, the theme about the EP should all link...
Graham, I always love coming back to your channel just to hear you talk. You always have some interesting stuff to say

I totally agree! It´s always nice to hear, when people are talking out of true passion. And when they talk about your own passion, it can´t get any better... :-)
Your so damn good some times! Im putting together a small EP, keeping it simple and easy for friends and family... and your timing is so perfect!! Instantly pulled up the Studio calendar and set a release date!! Thanks once again! This is just dead on! ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you . Great vid👊
Damn, you're so motivational! Thumbs up!! #respect
You’re awesome 👏🏼
Good stuff man ! Its funny you said November 25 as a releasing date. I'm actually planning on releasing my EP around that time. Perfect timing.
This is awesome content! Going through this right now
pretty solid advice, that I'm sure will find some targets
Hey, Graham, speaking of EPs, I've heard people suggest more indie artists are releasing singles and EPs instead of albums because of how streaming services like Spotify have made it where listeners will only listen to tracks instead of albums. Since you're still releasing albums, what do you think of that?
@DarkSideofSynth

Yes, it is a sort of a vicious circle. Attention span has dropped down dramatically, supply of music has increased dramatically, for most long gone are the days when you sat down on your sofa and put on a record or more and relaxed and listen to the album back to back. So artists have to adapt but by adapting they keep that trend going. No matter what the format and frequency are, just make music, possibly good one ;)
We drop Ep’s every 3-4 months. Relevancy is important these days.
Nice one. Got your mail about that the other day, I'll reserve a spot for sure. I am, as a matter of fact, planning an ambient EP, I've been for a while but released other stuff in the mean time. Tracks are already recorded. They 'just' need finishing mixing & mastering, and I gotta do the artwork. Early december it should come out. There, I said it! :))
Thank You so much
Hi Graham, you asked about flowing brain juices. Your brain's neurons receive and transmit electrochemical signals. More similar to an electric circuit than to juice pipes. However, the thesaurus suggests juice = electric current, so why not? Thanks for keeping your good advice flowing!
Are you okay Professor Graham? You look a lil exhausted but am glad you are still posting new vids!
great advice! good perspectives for sure
Great video as always, I would however be interested on tips about instrumental music ? I find it so much harder to do instrumental music because the vocals are such a big reliable source in the sound. A video on instrumental songwriting would be awesome!
Brain juices... gotta love ya Graham..
This was very helpful!
Appreciated!!!
Gracias... solo, muchas gracias.
You are just great bro ... u always upload awesome vedio.. But plzz make vedio .. on best free vst instruments
you're amazing.
Have to rant a little bit. I respect your opinion on the subject of «what to sound like», as if I have to present a very certain kind of style or sonicly cohesive EP. In my opinion, if you are an artist going for an EP, not investing tons of money on renting a professional studio, producer etc, you should just let the artist in you be whatever it needs to be. Say whatever you want to say however you want. If I have a tune I love, but doesn’t match the vibe of the EP, I say fuck it! If the song feels right, it feels right. No hate towards you, Graham! Just the way that I heard it, made it feel like you were talking about it in a very industrial and mainstream way. As if the focus is «making it». I think the focus should be heart, soul and realness. Much love from Norway! ♥️
Thanks Gram This was awesOME and noted God Bless you with increase in Jesus name AMEN
I don't know about keeping things sounding similar within an EP. I think one of the things that was awesome about the Beatles in their later years was their variety of musical elements, like how the Sergeant Pepper album goes between rock, Asian Indian sounds to a show tune flavor. They also used a variety of instruments like soprano trumpet and unusual vocal ideas. Maybe an EP (or LP) should have a thread of coherence but it doesn't always have to be a musical thing (??)

an ep is 3 - 5 songs, a full length is 10 or more. More songs mean you can put more diversity, but a couple of songs might be better to stick to your main style so newer audiences know what to expect. eg an indie rock band that experiments could get away with a death metal and a dubstep song on their 12 track release, but if only 5 songs would confuse people
Watching this November 25 omg😭
I’m planning for my new worship EP. thanks Graham for your inspiring videos. God bless you.
This really helps...
November 5th I'm there Awesome. #UAD
Graham, First off, thank you for all the wonderful advice, tips and tricks. You have completely changed the way I record. Second, is there somewhere that I could get ahold of drum loops? I have EZDrummer 2 but it would be nice to get some free drum loops somewhere else. Thank you!
I would love to hear you sing over trap style beats
Please make a video on the topic of releasing originals... like what are the steps to follow to get your original songs in public... Because every content / song producer wants to know this..

We also wants to know how you publish your music.. What are your steps before you publish??
Its funny you made this video, i told my very small following im releasing a new single today but had massive set backs with my computer, i was going to push it untill tomorrow but this made me say no, get it done! Haha
I think you mean Neural peptides and Neural transmitters sir Graham:) great vids EP's rule!
Hey Graham how do you publish your songs? Do you just go through the copyright office or do you go through an organization like BMI? Thanks for your videos
Good video, as usual. At the same time, I disagree with the common view that an EP "should" have a certain sound. Most artists do things that way, true, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. At the same time, I really feel like that's up to the artist. Not everybody goes through musical phases where they only write a certain kind of music. Some people have very eclectic tastes. If someone wants to put out an EP that spans 5 different genres because of those broad tastes, then that's his prerogative. It's all about creativity and expression!
Graham, where could we hear your EP's?
Great video, thanks a lot! Would love to hear your thoughts about some good ways to promote your music online.
Do you perform live as a professional or otherwise? You are really good with so much talent in all areas of music. It would be cool if you made it performing, of course if you like performing.
Great points Graham . Add one point. We are in the fashion business , not the music business . The sound should match the lead singers voice , the key should be adjusted to their sweet spot , and the mode will determine the style. Example: if ur producing a Goth album - Lydian mode would work well , Classic rock - Dorian Country - Mixolydian , Ionian , Aeolian, Country rock , Dorian Etc.
I wanna record a spoken word EP I feel real poetry deserve more attention
Challenge 😎
For classical music
Hey Graham, tips for recording the first EP?!
Thanks a lot for those tips. Awesome, as usual. Speaking of which, my EP shall be released the 13th of December, 2018. Grim Shit - "Story Of A Ghost". You can hear two songs on my channel.
Great as always. Thanks, Graham. BTW, brain juices = neurotransmitters, cerebrospinal fluid, and blood. :)
Demonstrated in this video: Parkinson's law (the reason why the importance of the schedule is mentioned first here) and the power of scarcity (the workshop at the end). :-)
When i go above 0 my music sounds distorted but when i uploade a song it easily goes above 0 and still it's not distorted. Someone please help

I wish. Sad reality is that there is less money in Metal music because of the stigma around it.
Hey Graham, right now I’m using a USB mic (blue yeti) and cheap, 15 dollar, over the ear headphones. I have the budget to replace one of those things with something of higher quality, but I don’t know which one to replace first. Could you give me your opinion?

You'll need an audio interface if you upgrade your microphone. I wouldn't upgrade your microphone until you're ready to buy an interface. Check out AKG 240 for mixing. You won't find better headphones for the price.

Graham "I got EPs & EPs & EPs" Cochrane
"Your fave artists release an album every 2 years" sure wish Daft Punk was that quick
Brain juices = Cerebrospinal fluid? ;)
Graham... the following is said out of caring... you've got to brush your tongue when you brush your teeth! You've got coffee-tongue bro! :-p

You need to talk about also HOW MUCH MONEY IT COSTS to record music. IT AIN'T CHEAP, honey!!!!! :/
Thanks for the tips man! Check my channel and check my covers!
