3 thoughtful ways to conserve water | Lana Mazahreh

According to the UN, nearly one in three people worldwide live in a country facing a water crisis, and less than five percent of the world lives in a country that has more water today than it did 20 years ago. Lana Mazahreh grew up in Jordan, a state that has experienced absolute water scarcity since 1973, where she learned how to conserve water as soon as she was old enough to learn how to write her name. In this practical talk, she shares three lessons from water-poor countries on how to save water and address what's fast becoming a global crisis.

Animal agriculture uses more water than any other area of human activity. In California alone, the animal agriculture industry accounts for 47% of total water usage. If you want to save water, eat less animal products.

If you eat less meat you have to eat more plants. Plants take water too. Highly doubt the amount of water used for animals is much different than water used for plants after you account for the differences in energy density and water content from each source.

Actually, it takes approximately 13 times more water to raise livestock for human consumption than to grow plants for the same purpose.

Pat MaCrotch Nah because what is the life stock eating? So even if a plant needs as much water as a cow (which it probably does, right? Idk), the cow eats tooons of corn or whatever. Uses waaay more water :(

100% this! Taking a shorter shower, etc. isn't even in the same league of environmental impact compared to eating less animal products!

alina laubten No alina, that's not correct. You have to give water to the cow as well as the plants. As you move up the food chain, you lose energy in the process. Eating plants is magnitudes more efficient.

Every day as a vegan you save 1,100 gallons of water. Animal agriculture is depleting our recourses rapidly. Eating less animal products will do more than taking a 5 min shower.

In Australia, most people that can afford it are installing rain water tanks with pressure pumps and water filters. We personally have 11000 ltr capacity which gives us enough water for 3 months without rain and allows us to Water plants, have showers, brush our teeth, wash our clothes and generally have a healthy life and, it is powered by solar energy. When our water runs out, (it sometimes does) we can turn a tap on and enjoy water from the town supply which is half as good quality.

The shower head scheme in Melbourne is actually statewide through Victoria, I live in the central Victorian region and all our taps and showers have flow reducers in them. I think Western and South Australia have followed suit. I think the billboards showing water capacity are good, but it's also a listed feature in newspapers and TV news, etc. I have also taught my girls who prefer baths, to turn off the taps when the water level reaches the Ball of their feet (under the base of their big toe), as that is deep enough to submerge the whole back of their head when resting on the base of the bath while keeping their eyes clear by about 1cm. They do have to tilt their forehead under to wet/rinse, but they can stay in as long as they like without adding more water. I would have no qualms about drinking recycled water - the astronauts do! But I don't know of anywhere in Australia that has it for drinking purposes, just for watering council land/reserves.

Lots of talk about conserving water, but only one brief and narrow example of recycling water. The former is good, but you need to do some work on the latter. Gray water systems can replace residential sprinkler systems. There are a lot of low-tech approaches that you can do at home as well. For example, I flush my toilets with used shower/bath water. Plug the drain and collect the water in (appropriately enough) cat litter bottles. We have high efficiency toilets, so each bottle is good for about a flush and a half. Each shower is good for at least 3 or 4 flushes. The supply line is turned off, and I keep the tank open to refill. (Yes, you can pour the water into the bowl, but this way there's no splash.) Do the math: 1.5 gallons per flush (average), at least 2 flushes per day (low estimate), 365 days per year (rounding down, duh) = about 1100 gallons per year saved. Our laundry is done with Ecos (plant-based detergent). All the water is filtered of lint, then goes out to rain barrels which water the lawn. We have an average washing machine. It's not high efficiency, but not a dinosaur either. Uses 26 gallons per load (12 gallons to wash, 12 gallons to rinse, plus 2 more gallons during the spin cycle to push the last of the detergent out). Picture a 55 gallon drum. I can fill two of them almost to the top by the time we've done the white, lights, darks, and pink/purple/reds (because I have a daughter). But it all goes to the lawn and becomes local ground water instead of a waste water treatment plant and into the river and out to sea.

Being in the navy taught me the method of taking a submarine shower. Get wet. Turn the water off. Wash yourself, taking as much time as you want. Turn the water back on and rinse the soap off. Another method is to pee in an empty laundry detergent jug. It'll fill up after about 4 times then pour in in the toilet and flush once for 4 pees.

I'm living in Bloemfontein,RSA and people waste water as if there is no crisis in the Western Cape right next door; the hospital I work in, as an example, has so many leaking taps (that can be easily remedied by closing it properly) and other plumbing issues that cause significant water losses over time but don't seem to bother management even when reported- I'm terrified of water running out here but I'm not sure where I could start helping except in my own capacity- this talk was great though citing examples of water scarce countries 😕I feel like we'd only take widespread action here when it's too late

Nothing COMPARES to animal agriculture. California, for example- according to the Pacific Institute, agriculture accounts for 80% of California's total water usage, including alfalfa, the crop that uses the most water, and which is used to feed farmed animals.

Water is not lost forever, still part of hydrological cycle. Either build a expensive water grid or cheap to purify: recycle grey water for non potable use like flushing the toilet, watering plants etc. if you don’t like it then reinject into the aquifer to increase water table. Singapore recycles even black water to drinking water.

It doesn't seem that shower water really gets that dirty. Perhaps it could be continuously recycled as you shower. You could shower for hours. Also, water doesn't have to be perfectly filtered for toilet use. Dishwasher water with the soap still in it would probably be fine.

Dishwashers basically do this. They only use a very few gallons of water, continuously cycling it back over the dishes. For toilet use, try bath water. It's right in the same room. I describe methodology in an earlier comment, but the short version is simply this: Shut off the toilet's supply line, keep the lid off top of the toilet, and you can refill it with bath water.

I love how she touts that by the end of Australia's drought 1/3 of people had rainwater collection tanks in place.... Not in America! That's illegal in a lot of states. Antienviornmentalism at its best. ;)

orbix Is that a joke? Why would any govt ever stop people from rain water harvesting? Rather I've always seen govts encouraging it, as it saves cost of transporting the water back to cities from rivers, reservoirs and lakes.

I truly wish it was.... Upon researching though, a lot of these states have changed their laws after a backlash from people. Here is actually an updated list of each state's laws concerning rain water collection. When this was an issue like 10 years ago, people were actually being imprisoned for doing so. Glad to hear they are finally doing something to change those absurd laws. acerwatertanks.com/is-rainwater-harvesting-illegal/

Everyone is saying the same thing - give up meat and dairy and you'll be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. A meat based diet uses at least 20 times more water than a plant based diet. Most people know this but are too stubborn, selfish and egotistical to change. People hate feeling they're being dictated too, even tho they're not. It's simply common sense. People say they want a future for their children but fail to put their money where there mouth is. It's very simple. Go vegan, live at least 10 years longer and you'll be in less trouble with the Gods when you die too. Do it!

I'm just here to remind everyone that Vegeta is the prince of All Saiyans. And I think it's appalling, extremely disrespectful that Ted started this video without mentioning it. You make video about ways to conserve water, but if not for Prince Vegeta and his friends would the world be even here? I don't even see any Ted video where one of your 'experts' breakdown why Vegeta and Goku are so inspirational.. This is clearly disrespecting The Saiyan Race as a whole.
