3 Things You Need to Know About Phalaenopsis Orchids

Migrated to the kitchen due to 'noisy rain' - the 3 points I think everyone should know about the store-bought, mass-produced Phalaenopsis orchids.

Great video for people new to orchids highlighting Phalaenopsis which as we know is often their entry into the hobby. At some point it might be useful to new orchid growers to mention the type of water as they wouldn’t necessarily realise what difference it can make.

I have a phal i bought in one of the big box stores that i thought was one of the mass produced......ive had it 3 years and am now convinced this is no ordinary store bought phal, the plant is 2ft wide, it has 10 leaves, the spikes grow to be 3ft tall, the flowers are 5 inches across and white with a butterfly type lip and very randomly spotted dark magenta, some flowers have lots of spots and others none at all, sometimes a red lip pops up, othertimes not...right now it has spikes the diameter of my pinky, both spikes are also branched and it has atleast 20 buds and counting.....spikes are actively developing still so im expecting lots more buds, this phal of mine puts on a very spectacular display that lasts 3 months atleast.....have NEVER seen another one like it, and phals are everywhere here in deep south texas....its truly unique

This is an excellent video. I know so many people who think they cannot grow orchids because they bought one exactly like you described and did not repot it. I only have one orchid but hope to get more. It is a year old and blooming great. I did follow the recommendations you made here so they do work! I have ordered a second orchid to arrive soon and I will make sure to follow these guidelines for my new orchid. Thanks for the great advice.

I really appreciate this kind of video, because it is so rare to find something that's actually relevant to orchid care. There are more myths circling around than actual care articles or videos. Thank you Roger. Concerning artifical light, I experiment with LED and it seems to actually work. It doesn't heat the plant and seems to work if you don't have enough natural light. Sun is always the best, I prefer it before artifical light, but sometimes you just don't have enough. If you tried halogen or wolfram lightning bulbs, the plant would be harmed, but the phalaenopsis seem to enjoy it in winter time.

Enjoying your talks here in Central Florida; phals are affordable for me at age 81 1/4 on a low fixed income .They live on the screenporch and do well facing East. Morning sun, sky water, and high humidity. With a bit more $$, I would visit the numerous orchid sellers in our area and purchase a variety, but grocery store phals make it possible for me to enjoy orchids year round. Thank you for this video. Stay well.

Good basic care chat. Love the one in bloom, lovely deep colour. Most of my orchids have algae growing in the pot, so as soon as the weather warms up, there’ll be a mass repotting. I’ve bought some pots with slits in the sides, hoping that helps with the airflow.

  • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger

The slits will help but will mean the media dries a bit quicker so careful with watering.

  • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger

    @GrowingOrchidswithRoger

Don't repot when there are unopened buds as they will often blast. Once the blooms are open, the worst that can happen is that they don't last as long - but the plant will be better for it.

I found this video AFTER watching similar others and I'm delighted you've confirmed I've done pretty much all the right things. Explains why my 5 phals are now producing new leaves and roots. I'm an ex-pat Brit living in Perth Wrstern Australia. Our temperatures are just right but I could (at the time I repotted these rotted-root orchids just after purchase) only find chunky mulch pine bark. I guess I'll have to track down the right medium and repot after their next blooming. Just wanted to say how much I appreciate a gentle English voice in an orchid-care video. Still missing my homeland after almost 50 years in Oz. I just want your rain! It doesn't rain in my region in summer.

Love the new structure. I couldn't understand why everyone said that phals were the easiest to grow. It took me a while to figure out that the phals I were buying had gone through major trauma to get to the bottom of the world were I live. The youtuber I was following at the time lived in a hot dry environment so the media she was using was not suitable for my climate. All of them came in sphag moss and in my cool environment they were doomed unless I got them out and into pure large bark as quick as I could. Your climate is closer to mine so your advice suits my growing conditions. Looking forward to what else you have in store for us in your future videos.

I love how that bloomspike is arched over the plant itself. Along with 2/3 of my little collection (+30 orchids), I just recently lost my oldest Phal. Had her for 3 and a half years. First the heating system in the whole apartment complex died in December - nothing fixed as of yet - and then my grow lights died two weeks ago. I will start a new job on Monday, so that'll definitely help to buy new ones. I will start adding to what's left as soon as we have warmer weather. I'm stating to get really tired of this constant grey, wet, and cold.

I do this with al the Phal spikes - train them towards the light and once they reach a certain length, turn them round and the spike changes direction over the plant. Takes up far less space.

Well, this has to be the best video I’ve seen in a long time on Phals…. Thank you Roger I wish you had made this video 2 years ago when I started my orchid journey. I killed quite a few my first year but am proud to say I currently have around 80 and all are blooming most with double branching spikes. One of them has 60 blooms. I think they like the room they live in. Day time temps hover around 80 degrees F. If the suns out. And night time drops to around 68 F. All grown in my own bark mix. My only issue is humidity which is super low and forces me to water more frequently. I tend to grow the minis which I adore. I live in the north eastern part of the US. Because I’m watering so much my littles get fed probably 7 times a month at 1/4 strength I use 50/50 well and distilled water. They seem super happy so far. My second year has been so much more enjoyable than my first. And they all started spiking in August not in the fall. 😅 thank you so much. I love watching your videos. Cheers.

Phalaenopsis should be nicknamed the "Gateway orchid" like a gateway drug as it is undoubtedly the one that starts the whole orchid addiction!! Great video!

Filmed prior to the main vid and a still captured. Then using the video editor to get all the bits together and then taking another still for the thumbnail. Bit of a faf - but these sorts of things should make a difference.

dark pot is a good idea, but id rather have the airflow without it. Also, i think there might be a problem if they stay wet longer than about 10 days. a less dense medium might be better for the orchid elisabeth

Thanks for the interesting video of these plants. Don’t get many of them so it’s a job to know what to do. My plants are little leaves coming from the middle and they are splitting. I think it was because of the cold weather warm weather and then going cold again what do you thinkmine are in my living room could get them in my kitchen window but I think it’s a bit cold in there especially by the back door. Nice nice plants catch you soon

That was very interesting, because I am quite a newbee with orchids. And, did you already shrink the size of the logo a bit ? For my personal taste it could be much smaller. Maybe down to 1/2 or even 1/3. Thank you for this 23 minutes of conpressed information. 🍀

Enjoy your talk on phalaenopsis. It was my beginning species in my orchid journey. I currently do have an orchid that has been in my care mounted to bark living under a dome. It has grown 3 new leaves in 2 years and is currently approximately 1 to 1.5 inches. It has mottled leaves. The tag states aeangis punctata but looks like a phalaenopsis. Have you had any experience with this orchid. Thank you for you channel. I've watched you for several years.

Hi Roger! Have you ever come across a phal that grew a new leaf sideways from the top, and then a second new leaf underneath an older (albeit small) leaf? I have mostly figured out how to grow phals in my home environment, but this one was a raffle win, and it is being strange!

What is a good way of transitioning a NoID mini phal from moss to bark? I already started by removing some moss, but I'm waiting for all the buds to open. I've been told to start by placing the orchid in a terracotta pot and wait six months, but I've transitioned orchids from moss to bark in much less time before by watering more than usual to maintain similar humidity inside the pot.

A terracotta (clay) pot will have a cooling affect on the roots (evaporative cooling) - Phals are warmer growers? If the media isn't too bad wait until after blooming when the plant should come back into vegetive growth during which time new roots should be growing. Start with a smaller grade bark and don't let it dry out completely - keep the plant warm.

I think I’m having beginners luck. I have three phalaenopsis in flower and today every other one has buds or spikes (12 more). They live on north facing windows in kitchen and bathroom and I’ve slavishly followed what Roger advised in an earlier.video. I hope it isn’t just a flash-in-the-pan lucky break. Watering does worry me.
