If you want a reliable cvt, buy a toyota, as a toyota mechanic we got cvt cars coming into the shop with nearly half a million kilometers on the original transmission. I dont know how they do it, but they seem to be the only manufacturer who actually produces proper cvts. Also almost all their hybrids use cvt.

Hmm I have heard cvt is quite reliable in slower cars. Do you know anything about the models over 200hp with cvt? Do they hold up? Also heavier cars

@@vics5623 well the Rav4 hybrid models use a cvt, and they push up to 220hp and weigh about 1700kg or 3747lb and they dont seem to have any issues either. We’ve had 0 transmission related issues with the hybrid ravs so far, so toyota is doing a good job at making solid cvts even for heavier and more powerful vehicles. But since i work at a toyota dealer the vehicles that come here are well and regularly maintained. So i cannot say for sure how reliable they are when they aren’t well maintained. But the only real maintenance that is done on these transmissions are transmission fluid changes. Besides the rav 4 i dont really know of any cvt toyota that does have common transmission issues, and cvt complaints are quite rare in general. In fact we have more complaints about the manual or normal automatic transmission than we do for cvts.

3 things Mick doesn't understand about automatic cars: 1. Not all auto cars have a manual mode 2. Not all manual modes are the same; many will shift up and most will shift down (including kick-down) 3. Creeping on a torque converter is totally fine.

@@Omarock The dealer should know; it's normally not in the marketing materials, though sometimes it's mentioned in the owner's manual. Test drive is probably the easiest way to tell (and to tell about a few more things too).

I think his target audience is British people who like driving and not Americans, or British people who only see their car as a tool. I'm not making any presumptions about yourself 😉 I can confirm that the manual mode on mothers lowly aygo is pretty obedient as confirmed by myself when I've tested it, and by her when she's attempted to use it then given up because she always found appropriate gear for desired speed and style of progression to be somewhat confusing. You have to allow it to be obedient though, so manual means manual, until it HAS to intervene such as to avoid a stall. At the other extreme it will just sit at the rev limiter. I'd be interested to see a video with a proper crappy old school auto on a simple cheap when new car. A lot of small new cars could be considered slightly premium these days, Micks Clio included 👍

Toyota Hybrids are not conventional CVTs, they use duel motors and the engine to create a continuously variable transmission. Very reliable. CVT type transmissions can also hold the engine at peak power output, no other transmission can do that.

Agreed. I’m running my second Toyota hybrid. It’s more refined than the previous one overall. They actually use the term ‘eCVT’ in most of the documentation about it for the mechanical side - but the electric side of the hybrid is king, when it comes to brisk starts from rest. Zero risk of stalling etc. All traction motors have the property of being able to turn out maximum torque at zero speed, which results in the simplest mechanical transmission both on the road and on the railway. You’re right about them using constant engine speed when required, but a lot of that is to optimise the thermal efficiency, along with no idling at low speed.

I've always driven manuals. I recently bought a '22 Supra, which is auto because the manuals are so hard to come by. *ZERO* regrets. Autos have come so far these last few decades. I could never shift as quickly as this auto, plus now I have a free hand instead of always needing one available for shifting.

Hands down the best explained video on automatics. I am still unsure and need to do a few more test drives to confirm whether I want to make the switch, but this video has come closer to convincing me. I think the fundamental issue is the lack of that third pedal. I really enjoy the connection you have to the car, and whilst dual clutch is a happy medium, it still cannot rival that visceral feeling you get from a manual transmission. Great vid as always Mick!

I can't see what benefit you would get from an automatic transmission. Maybe you would find one that seems fun on a test drive, but the novelty will wear off within a week and you will wish you had a manual transmission again.

Honestly, I have both. To help you with your decision think about it like this: How is your daily commute to work? Do you creep allot in standing traffic? Do you want to be engaged with the driving or just not care about it? If you are stuck allot in traffic (city driving) I recommend going automatic as it is more relaxing. But if you want to be more engaged with your car all the time, stick with the manual. Sure you can go manual on a automatic, but I never find myself doing that unless I actively search for a nice B road.

Good watching after I test drove a Fiat 500X yesterday. I normally drive a 110BHP EV so thought it wouldn't be too different but all the little technology and feeling the gear shifts is a lot of get acquainted with. I pout the 500X in manual mode and felt like it was in its best use case

Incredible video I love the simplicity of your explanations. I do just have one question about the economy of autos, I thought that keeping my car in too high a gear was bad for the economy? I live in a very hilly area so when I am on a uphill and in too high of a gear I find myself having to use a lot more of the throttle and I thought there has to be a point where the engine is exerting more energy than necessary, so gearing down and driving with the rpm higher to maintain speed was the best thing to do?

To be honest a lot of 'manual' modes across different cars are frustrating to say the least. perhaps on more performance oriented car they allow more control, but in other cars they can intervene more than they should for a 'manual mode' resulting in a frustrating experience. fantastic video, great tips and alot of care out into it

I had an RS Megane 225. Manual. It made me feel like I was a racing driver. Then I got a Mini Cooper S with a basic auto box. Made me realize I could accelerate faster without having to change the gears myself. One less pedal to worry about. Never bothered with the "manual" mode. Made me feel like I was playing a computer game. Driving a Nissan Juke auto at the moment (don't ask), and that has a sports mode and a manual mode. It's not fun at all. Good video, mate.

Hey Mick, thank you for this content. I have a few doubts, 1. So I own DCT transmission powered with a hybrid battery. So when I decelerate or slowdown the battery powers up on the EV mode. So lets say my EV mode is on and im in a traffic, will that still wear of the clutch? My vehicle is a Honda Vezel 2014 hybrid 2. Can you drive a DCT on manual mode on a traffic, what effect would that have on the transmission? 3. I also hear that when you drive hillside roads most of the DCTs get heated up, is it because they dont drive on manual mode on those types of roads or whats the catch on driving hillside on a DCT.

Fantastic and sound advice given on this video. The little details are correct and without doubt in my opinion would make these gearboxes last a long time. This will be the future of all cars, however the general public wont learn the finer techniques. I enjoy my automatics and agree that they are better than manual which are not bomb proof either due to dual mass flywheels. Certain drivers will always be rough and plenty will have feel and apply technique. As an oldie even I am learning!!

I've been driving since 1966 and I now have my second automatic. The first - 30 years ago was a Borg Warner 3 Speed box, which I had for only 18 months. One year ago, I bought a car with an eight-speed auto torque converter box and I just love the effortless driving experience. I've tried manual mode but even after a total of 56 years of manual boxes,with the flappy paddle changing, I just can't get my timing right and if I'm in manual mode and pull away from lights, I sometimes forget and when the engine's at 6,000rpm I suddenly remember to change up! And the box will still change down if it thinks I'm going too slow for a gear! I think I'd better watch Mick's video on driving in manual mode.

the new hybrid rav 4 has a CVT. It's nothing special but as the revs stay consistent the rumble sounds surprisingly good sometimes when you're just teasing the throttle a little in sport mode. Would still prefer a normal auto tho :D

I actually do shift to 5th at around 40 mph a lot. But only when I don't need to accelerate further and when I'm not going up a hill. I also do this to keep my momentum at a slight descent without needing to press the gas pedal.

I have a problem with my left foot so after 25 years all manual motoring I’ve had to go auto. The family wagon is a lumbering beast with a big engine and while I agree totally with your manual mode there is also a certain enjoyment to using fine throttle control when in D to ensure the car is in and stays in the gear you want. Great way of having a fun drive with the kids in the car. But manual mode when I’m on my own and want to enjoy the drive. Speaking of which, the ZF8 you mention is in my BMW and if they told me it was a dual clutch, I might believe them compared to the torque converter in my 15 year old Audi!

How to have fun in an automatic car: Step 1: Put it in manual mode 💀 Ok, but for real in my budget I don't really have a choice because older cheaper cars come with torque converter (usually 4 speed) gearboxes which make already slow ~150hp engines feel even more sluggish and are less fuel efficient. Manual is the better option here if I want to have some fun. Maybe my budget will allow for fun automatic car someday.

Try a late 90s 1.3i automatic hyundai accent with something like 70hp. Yep, that's what I was blessed with before parents caved in and helped me get my own car. I think it was actually 3 gears + overdrive it was so ancient underneath. I would joke to my mates that O/D off was sport mode 😂😂 luckily for my social dignity none of them were into cars. This was a long time ago - I've not long turned 40 so 😂

I understand that you shouldn't stop and go in 2nd. but what if you're at a complete stop at a red light, resting in second, then accelerate off to third when green. it shouldn't be slipping given i'm still the entire time i'm in second. is that correct?

I fully intend for my next car to be manual as I have an automatic already. That being said, it was one of the best decisions I made to have myself experience an autobox, as I never would have fallen in love with "the drive" otherwise, and I would have been yet another idiot trying to clout chase with constant grinding and power figures. In fact, a DCT gearbox si identical to a manual gearbox. The clutch is the fragile part. The torque converter automatic gearbox and CVT's are trully automatic

Hi Mick, i have owned 5 New Subaru WRX since 2005. my first 2 were manual, my last 2 were CVT, i have recently purchased a new 2023 WRX Sport it has the new Subaru SPT auto, it is just brilliant to drive smooth and rapid responce when required. Please do test drive the new WRX SPT (cvt) BTW i do like the Renault Megan RS i have owned 2 new Renault, and 5 new Peugeot cars. 👍 Au.

If you consider topic to talk about. Please tell us if your drivers as community have some kind of code, like extention to rules, or even amendments maybe. Or common habbits which suppliment official rules. For example our drivers, let's assume it is left sided system, when approaching T- intersection with main road to make left turn, should signal left, but they are signaling right to notify drivers on main road they are going to join main flow. Also, would be interesting to know about gestures and light signals as communications between drivers. For example, do you make two short far flashes to warn other drivers about police in the bush?

Can you make a video next on how to keep a centered lane. Despite driving for 5 years now, I end up leaning more on the left side of the lane, or hug the line I’m making turns on. Whenever I turn on my lane assist to center myself, it feels like ima crash onto someone 😅

I drive a DCT and I absolutely love it. It feels like a race car, minus the power 😅

I understand the benefits of fuel economy on the highway but some gearboxes really under-rev the engine and this is bad for two reasons: when you want to accelerate, if you press slowly on the pedal it will lug the engine a bit until it decides to shift down and for turbocharged engines, the turbo isn't spinning as much as it should, or at all. If you select the gears manually or stay in sports mode it's fine but on eco or even normal I find myself manually overriding the transmission before accelerating just to avoid these issues. I have a Aisin EAT-8 torque converter, the behavior is different for different models.

The trick I used when I drove Automatic 520d was to give a quick blip of throttle to force the gearbox to downshift. Once the downshift happens, I can proceed to puch down throttle as required.

Torque converter: The medium between propeller and impeller is oil. How is it supposed to wear when creeping. In drive, it is engaged all the time. That is actually the main advantage of a torque converter, especially when maneuvring a trailer. The oil might get hot, and you shouldn't let it creep for hours of course, but in dense traffic, i don't see an issue tbh.

All nice and well, but I still prefer the feel of changing gears with a gearstick, to feel the gears engage.

I'm a paddleshifter guy but I remember banging through all the fears on my Miata, may not have been as fast as my current car but it had a soul.

So, I have a 20 year old Audi A3 with manual transmission and over 300000 km on the clock. The clutch is still the first one. Now I'm looking for a BMW 128ti, which unfortunately is only available with automatic transmission. That sucks! But I have to replace my car because of various defects (turbo, power steering). So if I want a 128ti, I have to go for an automatic. But this video disappoints me as far as automatics go. The way I see it, an automatic offers me no advantages whatsoever. If I want to have fun, I have to switch to manual mode. If I want to have a long life, I have to be careful. If I want to save fuel, I have to ... What I'm trying to say is: I hate the automotive industry for doing away with the manual transmission.

You shouldn't be so negative about CVTs as there are some really reliable ones like the Toyota e-CVT (which isn't using a classical belt drive, that's why it is better)

In the early 90s, the williams f1 team developed a really quite good cvt that was unfortunately banned by the fia before they could use it a race

thanks I have the clio with EDC and will deffinitely STOP creeping in traffic without gass pedal... I did 25k kilometers so hopefully its not runied yet!

15:10 the reason I dont hold 6th at 40 isn't because it feels unnatural, it's because I'd need to manually change down if I wanted more power from the engine - the lack of kick-down makes the car feel unresponsive when holding such a high gear

is it normal when you release the foot break, when car is in D or R. The breaks sliding with car momentum and it make noise. Is it normal in automatic cars

12:24 one of the reasons why manuals are more reliable, because you can do what you described without slipping the clutch (or touching the accelerator) and still have superior control in stop and go traffic. You can let the car creep forward in 1st or 2nd gear completely off the clutch, but you have to be careful with the accelerator on 1st gear (sudden lift off is brutal).

How do you notice the wheel spin 3:10? I can't notice it unless i accelerate too hard after stopping to get away from the intersection ( mostly during winter it happens to me ) but in that conditions I didn't even think about that

Its something you feel, or failing that if you have traction control turned on you're likely to get a brief flashing light telling you something is amidst lol

if I floor the throttle in my volks in manual mode it assumes I dont have the slightest idea of what Im doing and it downshifts

The newer 10th gen + honda cvts are better than ever before. I have had zero issues with mine (2018)

this is 100% true in the case of the WRX, though it is worth knowing you NEED to change your fluid every 30k or so miles. In the U.S. they are billed as lifetime fluid which is of course BS.

@@MidnightGreen4649 remember 1 thing, all difficult condition may be proper maintained in case of wrx, rs etc, if you use it in corner edge conditions, it's best practice.

You should really research the fourth type of automatic transmissions, Toyota / Lexus so-called eCVTs, which are not like your other CVTs, but essentially a totally different type of transmission. I think 'planetary gearset' or epicyclic gear train is a more proper name for them.

most automatics use planetary gears. If I'm not mistaken, the Toyota Corolla has a CVT with a traditional first gear to help with acceleration from a stop.

Some nuance: Torque converters, the mechanical components, DO NOT wear. Torque converters cause the automatic transmission fluid to heat up rapidly when they create large amounts of torque multiplication and slippage (and those things are related but not the same), and ATF breaks down at temperatures above 110 degrees C. Worn out, dirty, burnt fluid is bad for an automatic transmission, but the mechanical components of the torque converter could not be less affected by this slippage. The torque converter clutch on the other hand - the component responsible for locking the torque converter and reducing slip - absolutely can and does wear out. They usually wear out when worn, dirty, burnt ATF goes through the system and reduces line pressure on the TCC, causing it to slip more than "desired". Perversely, some auto manufacturers engineered their torque converters to feature clutches which are designed to slip. These designs are horrific for longevity, especially if the ATF is ever allowed to get hot. In general, torque converter clutches only slip when more power is sent through them than they were designed to handle, as in when the engine is tuned to make more than factory power and torque.

you gotta dance with the manual, feels more rewarding. Theres much more to learn and some people want that. For me its not about going as fast as i can but about having more fun.

Why you saying automatic like that

theres also single clutch, and a frew variations of that. also cvts are fine when build properly. the way they bastardised them for consumer cars, and for whatever reason put simulated shifting in. they mostly better for lower power stuff, but they are also used in HUGE excevation and mining equipment, but they are nowhere near related to those nasty rubber things in cars.

I have a Megane tce 160edc. Opshifting is slow.

Most car makers are leaning towards CVT nowadays including Honda and Toyota, known to make reliable engines. Though agree they may not be very fun to drive.

The paddles are better than manual mode on the shifter. I always go with paddles but also the kickback you get in 6th and goes to 4th then 5th then whoosh, you're off. No manual can compare with that.

Never realised that some DCT gearboxes move when you take your foot off the brake. My M2 doesn't.

2:21 Toyota's e-CVT is darn good. No torque converter. No belt. A planetary gearset driven by 2 electric motors and the engine. They're practically indestructible and they do exactly what you want when you want.

My issue with autos is that I absolutely hate the fact that I cannot skip gears. Let’s say I’m in 7th gear, but I decide I want to do a hard pull for which I need 4th. In a proper manual, I can just go down to whatever gear I want immediately, but in an auto I need to switch sequentially. This feels absolutely horrible.

The auto dsg box on an audi rs3 allows you to go down several gears at once. If you hold the left pedal for a second or two, it automatically goes down 2 or even 3 gears to give you the best rpms for acceleration immediatly. Idk about other cars but there must be more cars that can do that.

You know what? An automatic maybe funny to operate and more efficient for gas consumption but nothing fells like a good old 6 speed manual which by the way should last as long as the entire vehicle if you treat it properly.

that's BS, no way to monitor it. all autos with manual modes have fail-safes, u can't money shift them. your test or driving instructor will tell you to use the automatic mode, but once you have your license do whatever you want in the bounds of the law.

They even change up or down regardless to save damage, even you don't do it yourself. Don't listen to this idiot, I'd suggest he's never driven anything other than a modern car with a clutch that's like an on/off switch rather than anything with any travel.

Nice video🔥 i am a only automatic driver, my license only allows automatic. Here in germany you can do a license for automatic cars only, dont know about great britain. Its more expensive tho... But manual is useless to me. You are still a car guy with automatic, i got a 2012 bmw 120d sport, with the steptronic 8 speed gearbox. I am in love with it, dont want a different one, altho with more mileage, like mine with about 130.000 kilometers with still the original gearbox in there, it jerks a lot when its cold, and you drive in the city. But b roads, autobahn are amazing... 184hp is not enough for me, but its not Nothing either😁 taking it to the Hockenheimring and Nordschleife Touristenfahrten this year... Lets see how it does, hopefully doesnt break anything

i wouldn't rule out manual. if you can get your hands on a manual car/ get a license i'd recommend it. modern manuals aren't as good because they can rev hang and auto blip and the shifters aren't as engaging, but trust me, if you get in the right manual transmission car with good controls and minimal driver aids and a relatively light flywheel, no automatic comes close to the driving enjoyment. driving a curvy mountain road heel toeing and nailing up shifts is as satisfying as it gets, though this does depend on the car, like i said a lot of modern manuals don't hit the mark and the auto equivalents can actually be more fun. in the case of BMWs, autos are on par or better lmao, when i talk about 'manual cars being unmatched' i am talking about everything from an MX5 to an s2000 and a lotus elise; manual BMWs can be fun but you are not missing out on much. Manual BMWs tend to have heavy flywheels and long throw shifters with a vague shift feel, usable but not ideal. good luck with your track trips, make sure the cooling system is up to scratch and monitor oil levels, the nords will put that little 120d through it's paces lol, be sure to have mechanical sympathy XD

@@blanchimont5587 you say little 120d, but talk about s2000🤣 those cars are even smaller, no one takes them serious, even with 300hp where you already feel like a racedriver. Try driving the new M4 competition, audi R8 or Tesla Model y with 800HP. I drove these cars for a day too, thats a lot better than old, manual shitboxes. Its just not fun to me. If i wanted, i could learn driving them for sure

​@@KEV19019 never meant to insult your car lol. just in the context of the Nordschleife it does make a 120d little it makes many cars 'little' i.e under powered (this includes an MX5). doesn't mean you can't have fun in it or its 'inferior' but it's most certainly not in it's element at such a large circuit (taking an under powered car and pushing it to it's limit is it's own challenge and reward tbh) sorry for offending you and hopefully you understand everything else i said and someday have a go at rowing your own gears the proper way :)

Renting cars made for the track is more expensive than just using my own car, i am saving up for a new one, my 3rd one, bought cash. While others my age flex with new mercedes from their parents that they have a lease for and are probably in huge debt🤣 not me. Never🔥

Thank heaves we don't have otomatic transmissions where I come from; they sound dreadful. We have automatic ones and they are fine, including the trouble-free CVT on a six-cylinder Subaru I've been driving for 9 years.

I still don't think autos are as engaging as manuals, and also most gearboxes will shift up in manual mode when they reach the redline. Only some cars don't. But as an all rounder I definitely prefer autos.

Yeah I'm a little spoiled. This car will let you bounce off the limiter if you choose. It really is a fantastic dual clutch.

Stop Driving One Handed and with your hand at the bottom of the wheel, you are not in full control. “I don’t want to go to fast and crazy,” but I will constantly brake the speed limit. Torque Converter Automatics are not harmed during creeping forward or reversing. I had a Rover 827 with 150,000 + miles, also a Vauxhall Omega 200,000+ miles. Never had a Torque Converter or Gearbox Fault on either car. Automatic Gearboxes Normally Select the Gear Appropriate for the Car to be in the Best Rev Range For what is Required, not all will be in 6th Gear at 40mph, it depends on how many Gear Ratios to Gearbox has. Its a known fact Automatic Cars are not as Economical as There Manual Equivalents. At Motorway Speeds to be in the Highest Gear is More Economical, but to be in the Highest Gear at Low Speed with Low Revs, isn’t as Fuel Efficient as the Engine will have to work harder to try and keep that low speed constant.
