I’ve only just started painting but discovered early that having a second attempt at a painting that didn’t work out too well is a great technique for improving. Without exception, my second attempt is always light years ahead of the first.

Showing mistakes is important and wonderful. It shows our humanity. In my opinion, if an artist doesn't make mistakes or have failed paintings - they probably aren't pushing very hard!

I purchased a #10 round synthetic brown hair brush . that I use exclusively . I take extreme measures to clean immediately after a session. Dish soap & scrubbing in the palm of left hand rinsing until no color remains in continuous rinsing

I find that sometimes overworking paint in a watercolor is due to a lack of confidence in my drawing, I have to trust my drawing ability and keep from slopping more paint on to correct what I think are errors or corrections needed but are really not.

I want to paint the golden gate scene, your painting is the inspiration.

Eric, your failed painting is still better than my best successful watercolor. Almost to many good hints in this lesson, I will replay while writing notes.

Watching this video,came just in time for me..I’m an Acrylic painter,and turning my hand to watercolour,I’m constantly adding layers and losing the transparency…watching your fabulous work,reminds me to be prepared with my washes,and then the paint won’t dry too quickly,and I can add whilst it’s still moist.It’s definitely a work in progress!! 🇨🇦🇺🇸

Can you please tell us what brand of masking fluid you are using ?

Good advice. I have found that with any better grade watercolor I can achieve the same result as with the best but ...I need sometimes up to 4 more glazzes..here is my biggest problem...they begin to look like my oil painting..I loose that watercolor look....airy....I can achieve depth but that's not what I want.

Amazing videos and incredible content! Hey Eric, do you mind touching on the topic how to paint big? Recently I just realized in order for my local community gallery to accept my work, I have to paint on something big. My mind went blank for a while when they told me about the size. Do I need to get larger brushes? For sure I have to buy more pigments and practice on larger paper. The cost can add up really quickly. Plus, for techniques, it’s just crazy to imagine this… almost feeling like painting a wall…how to get that many details to fill in a huge blank sheet of paper? I Not many people talk about this on KZread channel…. How did you make the change when you started?

I'll be honest, I really like your 1st attempt more, although the sky is better in the 2nd attempt. I prefer the colour you gave the underneath of the bridge, the wider lane and colours of the cars on the bridge and the details of the rocks. I hope this doesn't mean I'm going to make bad paintings by your review? I also noticed that you used warmer colours in the 2nd attempt which are not the colours reflected in the original photo?

to a certain extend. Digital is much more forgiving though, you can cover things very easily and cleanly since you can set the opacity level.

There is NO SUCH THING as the definition of a successful painting.
