3 things I learned from my intellectually disabled son | Emilie Weight | TED Institute

Ғылым және технология

As a mother with a son affected with Fragile X syndrome -- a genetic disorder -- Emilie Weight believes that a diagnosis of disability can create opportunity, not despair. Her son’s differences compelled her to question her inner self and her role in the world. With this new mindset she discovered his true superhero qualities when she stopped treating him like a patient and started treating him like a partner, leading her to three essential tools for how to approach life.
About the TED Institute: We know that innovative ideas and fresh approaches to challenging problems can be discovered inside visionary companies around the world. The TED Institute helps surface and share these insights. Every year, TED works with a group of select companies and foundations to identify internal ideators, inventors, connectors, and creators. Drawing on the same rigorous regimen that has prepared speakers for the TED main stage, TED Institute works closely with each partner, overseeing curation and providing intensive one-on-one talk development to sharpen and fine tune ideas.

Thanks very much for taking the time to do this talk. I came from the Fragile X UK site and read all the work and testing that goes into making a TED talk...amazing, but that's why they are such good quality I guess. I have an early diagnosis of FXTAS, but few symptons yet as I had the genetic text and MRI by chance because of another condition - but was lucky to have a very good neurologist. But I also have a son who is Autistic, and also has a very serious heart condition (HLHS). Like your son, he has taught us a lot, and is insightful way beyond his fourteen years. I don't mean insightful like a normal adult would be, which is probably not very much really - more like Zen Master.
