Thank you for explaining that the can opener can be used for philips screws No 2 and the bigger file on my handyman can open No 0 and 1. Very useful tools. I use my Victorinox Handyman every day.

Victorinox has the best saws in the industry. I take a farmer x with me in the woods. It gets used way more than my belt knife.

I agree with you on that, I bought a Leatherman Rebar on sale last year and was pretty disappointed to see how flimsy the saw on it is compared to the ones on my Hiker/Farmer, as well as shorter. I don't believe the saws on the larger and more expensive LMs are much better and I'm certain that none of them can compete with the larger saw on my 111mm Soldier. I am looking to get a Farmer X soon but haven't yet pulled the trigger.

Props for remembering how to tie a bowline, you old boy scout! I stopped carrying my "SwissChamp" because of the bulk and weight of it. Once I realized that my Swiss Champ was missing from my pocket when crouching down on the low side of a sailboat to winch in a sheet during a race, and didn't feel the pain in my groin I usually felt when the closed knife pressed hard into my lower abdomen. It's still on the bottom of the Chesapeake bay in the shipping channel up close to the Bay Bridge. The fish-scaler/hook disgorger blade of the champ is a usefull as a probe. I once let my cousin's wedding get underway by using the scaler blade to open the front door of a church that was missing the door knob (a very old fashioned doorknob set with a square hole for the square doorknob shaft). This let all the guests get in out of an electrical storm. The marriage didn't last more than a couple of years.

Thanks! That is quite a story. I've lost more than one Swiss Army Knives myself.

A word of warning at 3:00, I would advise against using a file for anything else other than filing, they tend to be hardened fairly hard and more brittle than something intended as a screwdriver; you could break it .Regarding phillips, the combination bottle/can opener (on the Bantam for example), it's designed to be used as a phillips driver, moreso than the standard can opene (which is new to me)/ The hook idea is a good one to know.

I find the standard can opener to be great with Phillips screws, whereas I still haven't bought a SAK with combo opener because as far as I know it's trickier dealing with Phillips, since you have to angle it with the point in the middle of the screw. I used to own a Victorinox German Army knife which has a similar but not identical combo opener on the end of a saw, sadly I lost it years ago, but I remember it being awkward to use as a Phillips SD. Without a doubt the Phillips inline SD on SAKs is the best but that layer adds a lot of extra thickness to models which are already fairly thick.

Nice. I like to use the T handle tinker screwdriver to break the screw loose, then use the can opener finish taking it out. Obviously the reverse for putting it back in :)

Too much talking.

The last trick does not only work on the Alox versions. You don't need to use the handle for it. You can oben a tool, for example the bottle opener and use that as the hard surface to push against. I wouldn't use a tool with a sharp edge for safety reasons but besides that you could use many different tools for that.
