I love the pod but I'll be honest I am actually surprised at how against overemployment you guys are. A very practical way to make ends meet (regardless of the alternatives) AS LONG as the employee is bringing home the results. Most 9 to 5 jobs are soulless and don't have a meaningful enough mission behind them. Rare bad take imo but that's just me. Enjoyed the episode nevertheless!

"Most 9 to 5 jobs are soulless and don't have a meaningful enough mission behind them" So the solution is to : 1/ build yourself up to get soulful jobs OR 2/ build your own thing I think that's what they wanted to say in the pod

  • @mitroman100

@@diarykely that's true I think that came through the pod. But it may be the case that there is a shortage of soulful jobs/they don't pay as much for what you want to do/ requires a start from scratch in terms of skill acquisition that wouldn't be practical. It might also be the case that not everybody is as great at business as Sam and Shaan are so doing your own thing is a whole monumental thing that won't be practical for everybody. The point I'm trying to highlight is so what if someone were to stack jobs and they found that easier to do and were happy with that. My issue was not so much of the alternatives 1 & 2 that were posed, but just how much overemployment was looked down upon. Frankly it should just be another tool to increase our income. Btw I'm speaking as someone who is self-employed and is very grateful for the position that I'm in 🙂

@@mitroman100 I think their biggest issue with overemployment was the ethical part (lies, deceit etc). Of course, as people who crushed it at their jobs and then became successful entrepreneurs, Shaan and Sam are probably biased. But let's not forget that they struggled to get to where they are (or at least, that's what I seem to see, especially in Sam's case) So that's maybe why they seem so against it : they chose another path, and have the feeling that anybody can do what they did (at least to some degree).

@@diarykely yh I appreciate that. This goes hand in hand with the values espoused in the pod such as doing what you can and going to extraordinary lengths to crush it at what you do - which I feel that overemployment is an extension of that! As you mentioned they are probably biased and I agree with that. Although tbh the fact that they strived and struggled (I wonder if any deceit was used in that pursuit out of pragmatism) to get to where they are should make them more sympathetic to overemployment, hence my surprise. I see no ethical quandary on not telling your boss that you have another job - it's none of their business especially if the work of their employee is satisfactory. I appreciate your points though.

Big fan of the podcast but I'm going to point out how terrifying it is for an employee with a family to only have one income stream. Furthermore, imagine being unemployed and having a family to support and applying to a job posting that has no intention of actually hiring (ghost job postings). If we're talking unethical things, ghost job postings are truly terrifying. There is data by clarify capital on this. Considering all that, employees should work multiple jobs as long as they produce results for each one. There's always focus on what the employees do and shouldn't do but seldom on what unethical practices employers are doing.

Their viewpoint on cars is very urban-centric. This is a prevalent viewpoint among the urban elitists, particularly on the coasts, but pretty much in every densely populated urban center. They seem to think that the "rubes" who live in "fly over country" (where all the food comes from) are irrelevant. If they want their self-driving cars in the cities, fine. But trying to impose this on everyone across the nation through government force (not that these guys suggested that) is major over-reach. Cars = Freedom (especially ICE cars) which is why the elitists want them eliminated. Much easier to control people when you can turn off their software-powered cars remotely with the push of a button.

If people are using mouse jigglers to fake productivity, is that even a real job in the first place? If I were a CEO I only care about results and about your availability during work hours, if you do the job and respond when I contact you I don't you have 1 job or 1000 jobs.

Most Americans will not want to lose the optionality that comes from owning a car. An american without a car is like a cowboy without a horse.

Most people don't have the luxury to work in the type of environment you did. How is this any different than what you have done by starting a business while still employed? Im pretty sure some of your guests have that too. The other thing you're missing is most average jobs dont pay much. Especially right now with all the inflation going on. Have you looked at the news lately? Maybe having your property insurance and taxes go up %30-40 percent isnt going to make or break you because hey you already have millions but the average person is different. And if you don't own your house, have you looked at the rents vs. wages? You guys are hilarious.

Being overemployed is the same as being in multiple relatioships. If your boss/partner knows about it, by all means go ahead. But if you're lying about it, it's clearly wrong. Own your decisions and take responsibility for them for Christ's sake

@@goblinmoblin4869When you sign a contract with your employer you're agreeing to what's being stated in the contract. I've never seen a contract where the company owner is stating he won't start new businesses. The employee however is agreeing to a full time commitment most of the times and that's why he gets paid. I see many in the comments want the benefits of owning a business without putting in the work of actually doing it!

It’s not the fact that people hold multiple jobs that bothers me. It’s getting paid by two or three companies for the same 40 or 50 hours worked. That’s really just stealing. I doubt most of these people are putting in a full work week for two companies. If they are, then I don’t have an issue with it.

@@goblinmoblin4869 that just sounds like a wasteful company. It’s shocking to me someone would get paid full time for working one hour a week. I work full time in small business where there isn’t enough fat for people to be unproductive. Also, I just wouldn’t like the feeling of not actually working. At that point it’s not much different than receiving unemployment. In fact, it’s only 4 hours a month different and a lot more income.

It would only be stealing if the company is paying you for your time and not for your output. If the company is paying you to get a job done and you can do that, who cares about anything else.
