This was when World of Sport was doing same afternoon coverage of British Speedway. That's why the 1985 World Final was on a Saturday afternoon. The year after WoS finished, live speedway was on Saturday afternoon as a stand alone show.

Concussion protocol wasn't so hot in those days was it? Kelvin was clearly concussed - and it was confirmed later that he was too - but allowed to ride in the rerun, although he missed his 4th and 5th rides then came out again in heat 18 (and fell again on the home straight.) Eskildsen badly lacerated his fingers on the fence - distinctly remember him running down the back straight to the pits/medical room holding his arm in the air while holding his right hand still with his left - he attempted one more ride then withdrew. Think this is also the meeting where Andy Smith and Peter Ravn tangled entering the first turn with (in the immortal words of Dave Lanning) "both riders taking a terrible humping!" Ravn badly broke both ankles and ended his 1985 season there and then whilst Smith also withdrew suffering the effects, (I've a vague recollection that Smith then rode at Belle Vue on the night against Cradley and fell again breaking his leg - although that may have been after a different Saturday afternoon Dudley Wood test match.)

Correct Andy, Peter Ravn hit the fence feet first, unfortunately it was his own doing trying to stop Andy Smiths run to the 1st corner.

    Those fences in those days!

Many tracks had far better records with 'those fences' than they do with the 'bouncy castle!' Not to mention that putting bouncy castles on the straight (where this accident occurred) proved a potential death trap.

@@bosssuggs1 Oh Absolutely. Some were not so great, some much better than others for sure.

@@marko1316 agreed. Not EVERY track actually needed air fences, fact is that at some tracks - which had perfectly safe mesh fences and a very good safety record - the installation of air fences has badly affected viewing for spectators - particularly those who watch from the bends - and has seriously affected the number of people through the turnstiles.

@@bosssuggs1 You're quite right. Seems that some tracks that were contained within a dog track 'might' have been safer.

@@marko1316 yes those are definitely the tracks I mean, admittedly there was a time where lamp posts were rather too close AND rather too unprotected , however those issues were addressed and they were moved farther away and also had to have a set amount of padding/protection around them.
