    @@SortedFood Well, I mean....it's the obvious joke. Plus, what else could you do to make a sausage roll take forever? Grinding your own sausage doesn't take *that* long, really, especially if you're not putting it in casing. It's like when you made your own kefir, for the smoothie video. You can just buy really good kefir, but the chefy version always shows you how do make your own. I think that's actually commendable. Not everyone's gonna make their own kefir, or puff pastry, but that you show how to do it for people that want to is a good thing.

    @@sorscha Well, i wasn't talking about Ben's approach but the vegan one. Of course super quality meat has a hefty price, so it will most likely end up being more expensive. (I'd probably go for a mix between Ben and Jamie (make the dough myself but buy some mincemeat, we've got very decent quality here) The problem with the nuts is, that they either come in super small packages or super big ones. So it might end up being more expensive than Ben's in the end due to odd amounts having to be bought.

    @@bcaye I'm not sure what Pierre-Louis Picot's nationality is, but I've read that Americans (and Canadians too?) use the term 'metric ton' for a megagram (1000kg). Honestly in Dutch we also use the word 'ton' to talk about 1000Kg, it's basically how normal people in everyday life say megagram, I'm not sure if I've ever actually heard someone use the term megagram before, but I've heard many people use the word ton before. I know it might not be an offical SI name for megagram, but here in Belgium we pretty much only use the metric system, so I wouldn't know what system 'ton' would be except for metric (at least when we us it here). I have read that there is something like a long ton and short ton in the US and/or UK, which is not metric. But as a person born in a metric system culture, I don't know how those work exactly.

  • @bcaye

    @bcaye

    @@lauralaura396, that's fine, as long as you don't hate on people who don't use the metric system for everything. If you scoff at people who use ounces and pounds, you don't get to steal 'ton' just by putting 'metric' in front. Also, J didn't put that many fennel seeds on. BTW, long ton is the British Imperial weight, 2240 pounds. Short ton is US avoirdupois, 2000 pounds.

    @@bcaye Thanks for the information. I didn't mean it as hate towards other systems or people using other systems It's just that you said that 'ton' is not metric and I just wanted to inform you that in some places 'ton' can still be used as part of the metric system (as the unit for 1000kg) even if it's not the official IS name. If I came over as hateful, I apologize, that was definitely not my intention.

    @Laura Laura You are totally right. I'll jump in with the Canadian volume metric side of this (being Ontarian) and point out that we were always taught in school to remember that "A metre cubed of water literally weighs a Ton!" [In reference to why we can't ship giant icebergs around for clean water purposes.] I'd like to think that a Metric Shitton is probably an older unit of metric measure involving agricultural manure.

    I've been cooking for over 40 years. I've made puff pastry from scratch. It's satisfying to make it from scratch. Fill it w/ seasonal fruit & drizzle spiced glaze over top. Fill it w/ veggies & top w/ herbs & a sauce for a savory side dish. Yum! I've also made my own homemade sausage, including sausage links. I've made my own croissants, too, as well as homemade bread (oatmeal is my favorite). In a pinch I use frozen puff pastry, but I prefer homemade. I printed out all 3 recipes bc I like sausage & there are times at church when we have to prepare meatless dishes. Eager to try these!

    Making puff pastry is one of those things you usually only make a few times in your life - and most likely to impress a girl, marry her and live happily ever after. I know, I haven't made my own puff pastry since that day although I cook at least twice every day since. Puff pastry is just one of those super special things. Our 25th anniversary is coming up in a few days so maybe I should go back and make some puff pastry... it's a very special occasion after all.

    It's a good idea to cook off a tiny portion of your sausage before you commit the whole to the sausage roll in case it needs seasoning adjustment. This was a terrific segment -- enjoyed it thoroughly. Really good demonstration of rough puff and sausage making in all three levels.
