That 5" Reiff, with the high saber grind, Micarta scales, and steel selection, literally hits everything on my checklist for what I would consider to be the perfect knife. I hope these guys have a booth at the Atlanta Blade Show so I can put my hands on one of these. Thanks for the rundown.
Ursus 45 feels just as good in the hand and similar shape
@gideonstactical
Ай бұрын
I have the Ursus 45 also great. But these have bigger fuller handles by just a little bit. And are a little bit thicker and stocky. Similar but different.
Architect field buddy is a cheaper alternative especially if you make your own sheath.But even with their good kydex sheath it'll save you about $100. And they have magnacut, 3v, s35vn, and 1095, not to mention every handle material you could want, and a lifetime warranty. I got their 3v 6.5 inch a while ago, and it was $170 without the sheath. Fantastic knife.

I also appreciate the Architect knives solution. Still, if money is not your first consideration, why not go for a Reiff knife if it fits within your defined parameters? They are proven to the point of being nearly beyond reproach in quality and efficacy. I priced out an Architect knife for myself and it ended up being about the same as it would be for a Reiff. It's a personal preference thing to me. I have two Reiffs and will probably buy an F5, but I will also likely opt for and Architect soon too.
@Swearengen1980
Ай бұрын
@@brettmorrical6978 One could rationally argue the reverse is opposite: If all things and price are equal, why wouldn't you go with the Architect to customize it to your exact preferences (which include scale material, colors/patterns, etc).
@ob1856
Ай бұрын
@@Swearengen1980Plus, you could use the knife to its breaking point and get a replacement for it at no cost. Honestly, the warranty is a no-brainer, plus it's made by WhiteRiver Knives, who do great heat-treating.
I prefer the flat/high saber grind knives that I use for hunting. I also use them for my camping chores as well and work great. I have several scandi knives and I found them limited due to chisel type grind. Reiff is great knife but here in Australia you need to take a mortgage to get one. The F4 is $AU700, for that price I can get 8 knives that will last me a lifetime.
Those are so nice but I’d rather pick up some Terävä Jääkäripuukkos. Either 110 or 140 would be good. You can get multiple of them and they’re bombproof!
@ob1856

When it comes to grinds I’m choosing full flat almost every time .Full flat ground knives outperform Scandi ground knives in every single metric except wood carving . Saber grinds kind of bridge the gap between the two . The only time I reach for a scandi is when I’m doing a lot of wood carving .
@gideonstactical

Good feed back!!
@samueljlarson

I think a Scandi might be stronger than a flat based purely off of the amount of steel and where it lives in the blade. Flat are definitely better at more things.
@gladeshunter8796
Ай бұрын
@@samueljlarson on knives of the same blade stock thickness Scandi’s are stronger but I know my Mora’s couldn’t hold up to the abuse I put my Esee’s through . A 3/16” or 1/4” thick Mora would be almost indestructible. Unless of course Joe -X gets ahold of it lol .

@samueljlarson it's a knife, not a prybar.
Man would absolutely love to have one of these. $360 is definitely pretty steep. But I do understand where that cost comes into play completely.
Those look really good and capable, but I would choose the saber grind and pair it with a smaller mora or something for woodcarving.
Great review. If I hadn't just purchased an Architect last week I find myself drawn to this 4". You should consider do a series: Last 4" knife I would sell. Last 5" knife I would sell, etc.
Thanks for the review and helpful suggestions/comments about the benefits and usefuleness of various styles of bushcraft knife blades.
I just pulled the trigger on the BK62, in part because of your review a while back. going for a throwback vibe. But oh man this one seems DOPE.
I feel like knife enthusiasts could learn a lot from this video 👍
Expensive!
I’ve found that when I put a secondary convex on a scandi I still get all the benefits of a scandi grind but with a tougher edge.
Such quality beautiful knives making only in America I think... So estetic perfect for me... Reiff knives very good...
I'm not the pro you are, but how I found out about the differences was to slice an onion. The Scandi can't cut thin slices. It separates as it goes. The Saber grind or a flat grind can slice the onion thinly. The differences became very apparent to me. Not that slicing onions is important, it just showed the differences. Therefore, I think the Scandi is good on wood, as it separates the pieces well, not precision thin, like feather sticks. The Saber is for food prep. Please let me know what you think about that conclusion.
Entered the GiveAway. Buying it is out of the question, now. I might have been able to, 3-4 years ago. But, pretty cool knives. They just cut through my Kephart obsession!
Very nice, I don´t mind the size though for carving tasks a smaller blade like the Reiff 4 is probably more useful. But for the price I´d expect a dangler included and the sheath wetformed out of the box. Still I´d love to win one. :-D The CPM 3V Ursus 45 at DLT is 255$. Slightly smaller and thinner handle though. The Reiff guarentee is neat.
Thanks for your thoughts on knives in general Aaron. Nice review on the two blades as well. Hope you and your family are doing well. Take care. 🇺🇲🔪🌲🔥
Love knife companies that back it up with a great warranty. Sabre grind is my go to. I might have to get one.
Those both look like fantastic knives.
These knives are good examples for premium quality. Also one of your videos 'forced' me to buy a Lionsteel M5 in Sleipner steel and now it's my favorite knife in my 70+ collection 😂 Your videos are great 👍thanks for your content from Germany.
Nice GAW. Thanks. Good luck everyone. That a nice knife. Looks durable.
Great looking knives. Thanks for the great reviews as always.
Excellent video again. I really like the Reiff knives. I don’t own one, but have been eyeing them for months. Hard to knock my Ursus 45 or TKell FMF out of the rotation. I love that Saber grind though. Looks like perfection, but I have two other knives on order and one more would hurt the wallet right now. Ha! The Anonimous from BM made an appearance. I had one for about a week. Didn’t love. Thank God for REI returns. Too bad too, I love Cruwear. Good stuff Aaron.
The only downside i can find is really the price....360 is a big number. Everything else is great. Having as preference my beloved Lionsteel T5 , i don't find a reason to get at this high budget, for something that is double the price. After all nice video Aaron!
Glad to see them branching out a bit. Wish I could get my hands on one...but just not in the budget yet.

Thank you for your video. Reiff is dropping the F6 in magnacut pretty soon; if you could only choose one would you keep the F6 in 3v or get it in magnacut and why? Would love to see a good comparison video when available. Thanks again.
Great review! A bit expensive for me but for sure this knife could be an excellent companion on my trips!. Good luck to everyone!. Thanks for the video.
Awesome looking knives love the scandi edge.
Nice review of some nice looking knives!
Beautiful knives for sure.
Great company, great knives. Go figure. I'm so glad they went with a higher grind. As far as a 4" vs 5" Scandi, just due to the nature of the grind, I think I'd stick with the 4" assuming I can't get the level of finesse and control from the 5" variant that I can with the 4" blade. They are almost two completely different knives. I just can't imagine the 5" feeling and being able to operate the same way as the 4. I've been wrong before, but only once. :))

@@kyleisamazing69 Okay. Care to explain?
OMGoodness what a great looking knife! Always appreciate the content sir.
G'day Aaron, I am well aware of Reiff, fantastic designs from what I've seen ....... at a price ; ) Price aside though; the term "camp knife" to me = car camping, or at least not far from one's vehicle; because; I'm far more likely to do more carving and general utility with a 4 to 5 incher, (of whatever grind and steel), hey even an Opinel is good for much basic LD stuff ....... and I'll have a shipload of options to play with for HD wood processing chores. Hiking deep into the sticks though; .... different equation. What some might consider a primary, "survival" knife around the 5 to 6 inch mark, I consider a secondary to a big effective walloper of some description : ) And for me thats where a scandi stays behind too, sure a sharp "anything" will do the business, but given a choice, a sabre, or "sabre-vex", is far more versatile I reckon. cheers Duke.
Great knife set!
Great video Aaron. Love both knifes.

My pleasure!
Great review and GAW, thanks
I’ve liked the designs from Reiff but I can’t seem to see the reason to buy one when I can get a bark river for less and it gives me a better grind and an extremely comfortable handle.
I think they nailed design, price is maybe 20% high
@ob1856
Ай бұрын
I think it's 30%-35% too high. There is very minimal handwork done on these to justify the extra price, even if they had to invest in 3D milling and CNC machinery when starting their company. Not to mention, they're based out of Texas, which has no income tax to eat into their profit margins. There are already a plethora of USA-made companies who do excellently heat-treated CPM-3V and MagnaCut (Bradford, Architect, and WhiteRiver) and charge significantly less at almost a 1:1 quality ratio.
Beautiful knives, a little outta my price range but good content none the less!
Great knives, glad they have lifetime warranty.

$600-$800+ here in Australia, i think other manufacturers make equal if not better knives at much better $$$point. Im not prepared to pay couple hundred extra for a particular grind when you can achieve that yourself at home✌️. Lionsteel t6 cpm 3v here is a$500 knife👍👍. Im happy with the t5 though✌️.
Great looking knives.
Too expensive imo for what it is. But looks nice! Bark River bravo lt 1.25 might be better value.
I’d definitely go with the f4 scandi over the f5 scandi. Seems easier to handle for long carving tasks.

while I agree 100% that the design of these is outstanding, and they are made to function under hard use, they are so far out of my ability to even save up for, that I sadly will most likely never have one. if I were to get one, I would be torn between the scandi and saber grinds, as I have both in other knives, and find them both to be extremely good for the field knife tasks I need to do. good review, thank you for this early look.
