    This isn't always guaranteed but another way to spot a hobby killer (if your on amazon) is to pay attention to the title of the telescope it may just something like 70mm 400 focal length but no brand name.

    I ordered a telescope that has a 80mm aperature and a focal length of 500mm, it also came with a 25mm and a 10mm eyepieces and a 3x barlow lens, Ive seen multiple tutorial videos on how to use it and how to look at all the planets, I was able to see the moon pretty up close including its craters using the barlow lens with the 10mm eyepiece, mesmerizing experience, but then I pointed it towards Jupiter, I was able to see it along with its moons with the barlow and the 10mm eyepiece but I couldn't see any of its features, it was just white like a star, tried focusing it but I'm pretty sure that it was at its magnefication limit since it was getting really blurry, I don't know if my telescope is powerful enough to see any of its features or if im doing something wrong, I've tried many times but it always turned out the same, but thanks for the tips!! 👍

    @@88BuckMeister Hello, I covered EQ mounts extensively in several videos. I'm not sure what you mean by "pointer", or even "left to right dial" since there's no need to have a scale on that axis. It sounds like you need to visit an astronomy club. For $400, I would get a proper beginner telescope like a 6 inch dobsonian, or a StarSense DX 130.

  • @88BuckMeister

    @88BuckMeister

    @@LearnToStargaze on an equitorial tripod, there are 3 scales, and 3 pointers over those scales. One scale is the latitude. You raise your tube, and align with Polaris by setting latitude (which is done using a scale and a pointer on the telescope, the scale sits still, the pointer moves with the telescope to point to a given number on the scale). Once latitude is set, there are 2 other axis on the mount, correct? Declination, and right ascension. On this tripod, each of those has a scale (dial) and a pointer relative to that dial. Just like the latitude dial, when you operate declination, the dial is stationary but the pointer moves with the telescope, showing you how many degrees you've moved (I think the dial is measured in degrees, maybe hours). Here's what I'm asking. The right ascension also has a dial and a pointer. But when you turn the right ascension nob, the dial moves with the pointer and the telescope. Is that right? Why would a dial ever move WITH a pointer? How would that measure anything?

    What’s wrong with equatorial mounts? And you need a red dot finder on a starter scope? These rules are stupid and you are not trustworthy.

    Small finderscopes are terrible, and the image rotations are confusing to beginners, and many beginners give up on EQ mounts. I’ve taught over 10,000 people, one on one, how to use telescopes (probably a lot more actually). These two issues come up over and over again.

    I currently own a rather beginner-sided EQ mount with 130mm aperture and 1000mm focal length. Now after making some observations over the last months I realised that I really enjoy working with an equatorial mount and manually tracking objects. But I also realised that the build is a bird-jones with a spherical mirror, which was not said anywhere and I just now found out about. Now Im thinking of swichting to an actual 1000mm focal length telescope, but I really want to stay with an eq mount. People always recommend dobsonians, should I switch or are there good mid-level telescopes with eq mounts?

    Aperture DOES NOT affect sharpness. Unless you are lucky imaging (or live in the Canaries) you will always be limited by SEEING not the diffraction limit There are some really high quality sub 100mm scopes, Tak makes some, so does sky-watcher For pure visual go with the biggest dob you can afford (and reasonably move/transport) but if you think you might get into an astrophotography a high quality small 50-80mm will be better as you can use it as a guidescope if you upgrade in the future

    For small diameters the seeing is absolutely not the limitation, diffraction is and that even with visual observation. That's true until 10-20" I would say, it depends on mirror quality and your seeing
