57 male. 4 months in. This helped. I thought I was dying! So many tests and DR visits. My lord. Money spent on meds and supplements later I now realize its rest and time. But sheesh what a pain not going to sugar coat it. I pray and believe that I and everyone here gets life back and has a better appreciation for it. LHC unit!

Just want to say you saved my life man. No joke. I’m 7 months or so in. At 3 months in I was bedbound and I came across your video. I can’t even tell you the comfort that came over me after hearing everything you said. It felt so good to know I wasn’t crazy. 7 months later here and I feel so much better! I’m out of the bed. Playing video games again, working on my truck and just have a different outlook on life. I still come back to this video to remember where I was :) Thanks man!

This should be viewed by all long covid sufferers. I'm 3 years in with Long Covid and this is completely on point. I agree be careful around the support groups because we need to calm our nervous systems down and not get ourselves overwhelmed by other peoples well placed anxiety. I'm in stage 2 and do acknowledge that I have the luxury to listen closely to what my body needs, which at this stage is resting after tasks and not over exerting myself. So to all the busy mums and dads trying to deal with Long Covid and pushing through with their obligations, I wish you well because this is a rough journey.

I"m in the 1st phase. It's been really difficult to rest and heal as a single parent. I have POTS/dysautonomia, shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, brain fog and all sorts of other weird symptoms. when you said"when you feel like you can do something, do 1/4 or 1/2 of that.", I almost started to cry. this was very validating for me. I have had people say that I just need to try and be more active. It doesn't work like that. I"m a telehealth nurse and had a really stressful day and then had to go pick up groceries and a prescription. my lungs were already tightening whil I was working and then with the process of going out, I am now completely exhausted tonight and feel ill. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and perspectives on all of ths.

My nerves have gone crazy since covid, its only been 10 weeks but feels a lot longer. Iv always been naturally nervous but i thought it had caused me to have a nervous breakdown. This is absolutely the best thing iv seen in relation to covid recovery. Iv already been trying to stay calm, i make myself do small duties each day, feed the birds, clean the dishes etc. after being off sick at work, iv halfed my work shift and changed to evenings which is a REAL challenge but i keep turning up. To most people i appear normal but like you said they have no idea. This has given much hope and encouragment to stay strong. Thankyou so much. ❤

I keep coming back to this video. I believe I'm currently in phase 3 after having COVID since August 27, 2023, and it's Maybe been a month in phase 3. But For some reason my sleep anxiety came back for a night and then went away just a few days ago.. I had sleep anxiety/insomnia in second month when I had long covid along with the rest of the crazy new symptoms. I've never had sleep anxiety and insomnia in my life before this. I feel like my nervous system is so out of whack. My sleep anxiety went away but now I'm dealing with this constant urge to keep swallowing even though there's nothing in my throat, it's almost like an anxiety of its own. If I don't swallow I feel like I'm going to suffocate or something, it's weird. It's like every 30 seconds to 2 mins tops I have to swallow... I just tried to take deep breaths etc. also excessive yawning every couple of minutes or more. I believe it's a stress response to my body but I may see the doctor.

Wow, you have really hit the nail on the head here, Erik. You described my phase one, perfectly. Not to mention my phase two, which I’m currently in the middle (?) of. You make a very good point about support groups on social media. When I first came to realize I had long Covid, the first thing I did was jump on Facebook to try and find “answers”. I joined a national support group and regretted it. I was way way way overwhelmed by people’s stories and the information they shared about blood tests, medical specialists, medical procedures, and on it went. Do yourself a favour. Don’t go there. I found sourcing info on KZread much easier on my brain. And thankfully I found this video, Erik, which affirms things I was already thinking. Thank you for that 🙏🥰!

I was so excited to see this video and listen to it. I am a year and a half out in my recovery. I was just telling my husband that my constant brain fog/fatigue is finally starting to become less which has been wonderful. My anxiety is finally getting better as well. My insomnia kind of is getting a little better. My brain fog/fatigue and anxiety go up when I dont sleep well but I think that is normal. My hair is growing back in slowly but nicely. My energy level is getting better. I would tell myself a lot, "This is just a bad season. It will pass." Mindset was huge for my mental health. To stay in a negative place is not good for ones mind. When I found your channel I was going through that research phase you were talking about in the video. When I stopped searching for answers, I felt better just letting it all go and allowing my body to heal itself like it was designed to. I didnt take any special supplements besides my usual stuff. I added a little bit of extra liquid zinc and magnessium spray besides what is already in my multi vitamin that I take daily. I also increased my foods that naturally had more of these zinc, magnessium, b vitamins, etc. My blood results were so much better in October. White blood cells are finally where they need to be. I increased my organic beef consumption which helped me a lot. So has eating eggs, nuts/seeds, fruit, veggies, etc. I just experimented and tried to figure out what made me feel better and I just kept at it. What works for one person may not work. I liked that you said to "find your baseline" because I believe it will be different for everyone. So glad you shared your recovery. I was just wondering about you a few weeks back while I was working out. You had mentioned you had just started walking. I started working out way to soon but I didnt realize it until after I watched one of your videos where you talked about it. I just scaled back and I am slowly pushing myself more. Sometimes too much and that is ok. It's a learning process. Prayers for your continued healing. 🙏

I am 11 months out and still struggling to find a baseline to build from. It makes so much more sense presented as 3 phases! I have also found that it is better for my mental health to stay away from the support groups. One of the most clear overviews of the process it takes going through long covid, thank you, I’ll look at some of your past vlogs. Only thing I can add is that it’s not always a linear process for everyone, an unexpected stressful situation or some other flu bug can make it a game of snakes and ladders sometimes. But finding that baseline again and getting oneself into a good mental space, finding something to enjoy that doesn’t drain the tank, is valuable advice. A good reminder to myself, thanks again.

You’re absolutely correct. It’s not linear. Sometimes moving backwards to the previous phase happens. It’s demoralizing but with the knowledge you gain the first time I feel like it’s a bit easier to navigate your way again.

Erik, I think your presentation was excellent. I have been struggling with the effects of long covid since the initial infection. My wife, who is European, came back home with the infection after a short trip visiting her family in France when the airports were shutting down. The crowded, slow-moving conditions in airport customs and packed flights contributed greatly to the spread of the disease. She came home with the infection, and I acquired it shortly thereafter. My main symptoms, over the long term, have been mostly gastrointestinal accompanied by an accute brain fog and dizziness/imbalance when standing. I found that your explanation of the "three phases/stages" of recovery is spot on! That narrative definitely fits my experience. Right now, I feel as though I am beginning stage 3 of my recovery. The elimination of stressors and getting bedrest was critical to getting better. Some of the lifestyle changes I was forced to adapt were not positively regarded by everyone in my circle, but alas, my objective was my survival that was to be reached through mindfulness and emotional well-being. One last point, I did find supplements/vitamins that improved my synptoms they are Vitamin B1 and B12, Vitamin D3, Potassium, Magnesium, NAC, and Ashwaganda (calmness).

3:48 Phase 1: Rule out any deeper issues. Then it's all about accepting, reframing negative thoughts, learning the things you can do to relax your nervous system (which is the upstream cause, despite what symptoms may say) 12:20 Phase 2: You're here when symptoms flares reduce and aren't so dramatic. DON'T push to do more. Now is the time to stay the course of what you learned in Phase 1. Keep resting, staying at your healthy baseline,. Think of recovery on a month scale, not a day to day scale, which is too small of a time to see the healing that's happening 15:10 Phase 3: When you start forgetting that you are sick many days, symptoms happen rarely. Now is the time for things like graded exercise therapy, slowly and steadily. General points for all phases: - You can't force yourself to the next phase. Your body will let you know. - This may the hardest thing you ever do. You will recover, but it will take time, and most people will likely not understand. - It's ok to take time to grieve, to acknowledge this will take a long time and you've lost much of your ability to live life as you did for a while. You can't heal until you accept the journey you are on. - It's tempting to look for the next external thing to heal you. However, once you look around and find what helps in phase 1, it's time to move on, trust the process. Stay away from fixating on symptoms. Limit time spent in online support groups if you're not experience direct, uplifting interactions specifically. Thanks so much for putting this together, Erik! While, scientifically speaking, I am not sure that these 3 phases are necessarily true for everyone, having this as a point of reference is incredibly useful, at least for me.

It felt great when I did it, I almost forgot my symptoms. In general I feel my symptoms the most when Im alone. So I will implement my swimming and sauna now twice a week, after a few weeks I wll start slow exercise like lifting waights, but only 10% of what I did before my infection. Yes it is a very hard and long way to a full recovery, its the most hardest test we are going through in our life. But I also guess it makes us stronger and it leads us to a better and new person we have always wished for. So folks, my lovely people we can get through it, we are strong and powerful. Great video and insight, i am into my 5th month and i believe i am between phase 2 and 3. Ive had a crazy ride i spent two months pretty much immobile and unable to eat with digestion issues, anything i ate made me so ill with many symptoms. When i could start eating again i started to recover, dropped 30lb in weight due to the lack of food, then the anxiety and panic set in, i am slowly coming away from that. I am starting to be more active and exercise and hopefully get back to work, i am improving all the time just praying for no set backs. Breathing exercises, cold showers, relaxing music all were a game changer for me. Thanks again good luck everyone

Great video! I’m just starting in phase three now. When I was in phase one, every time I had a flare I would google long covid, read research papers, obsessively scroll support groups, check my watch constantly to track my heart rate. I didn’t know at the time that all of this was dysregulating my nervous system and making my symptoms worse. I didn’t find my baseline until I stopped working and put my faith in a mind body approach, stopped checking my watch, stopped manically researching, and started meditating, breathing, ice bathing, and just generally trying to give myself a good life within my energy envelope. For me, I started to see improvements and stabilisation within 2 weeks. Of course, the choice I made to stop work is tough financially, and there should be way more support for us - but in the end, I was just getting worse by pushing myself and the decision was made for me.

It is so important to realise that your body is not broken (pls check doctor first). But it is a malfunctioning autonomic system. Safety reappraisal is so important. When the body works, do activities and build up slowly. When the body is stuck, listen and stop pushing and take rest. I'm 16 months from covid infection and almost there. People, don't listen to those who tell you otherwise. Full recovery IS possible. It might take long, but IT IS POSSIBLE. Don't loose your faith.

Very insightful video, and very much appreciated. Phase 1 is a bear, especially if you have to carry a stressful job and parenting. And acceptance is not easy given the intense limitations imposed by long COVID. I've been in phase 1 for 16 months, reinfected twice, most recently this February. Finding one's baseline and not straying a beat is definitely a challenge, especially if you're used to being active and relish being able to put your head down and push yourself through challenges. I'm learning that true acceptance involves finding what of genuine value I can mine from the illness. I've heard it said that one has to get to a place of seeing the condition as a gift and I believe that's true. Becoming more patient, more mindful, and less reactive; those are the challenges I have to embrace. If I can actually master those things, I have to believe this experience will have been a gift. I love a good challenge anyway! Good luck and speedy recovery to everyone who's suffering through this malady!

Consider talking to your doctor about the following: The spike protein of the virus is using the TLR4 protein on our T Cells to Trigger an inflammatory immune response. This is to cause deregulated release of Cortisol that lowers TLR4 inflammation. Cortisol then suppresses lymphocyte gamma interferons and IL-8 cytokines and effectively suppresses the primary immune response allowing the virus to spread. Cortisol also primes the secondary immune response and you get increased cytokine inflammation. To promote CD4+ helper T Cells you get elevated Extracellular ATP (the energy molecule) that increases Il-18 cytokines that in turn promote CD4+ helper T-Cells and increase lymphocyte gamma interferons. IL-18 cytokines are also linked to deep vain thrombosis so ATP has to help break down these blood clots causing fatigue.IL-18 cytokines can also cause release of histamine from Mast Cells that helps fight infection but can also cause inflammation. Cortisol at elevated levels also disrupts gastric secretions, lowers circulating testosterone needed to regulate systematic inflammation, causes ROS, causes insulin resistance and can increase blood glucose leading to diabetes. Cortisol is also correlated with homocysteine. At elevated levels homocysteine is linked to COPD, Alzheimer’s, brain shrinkage and hardening of blood vessels and blood clots. With the original SARS the virus was found to be infecting the ACE2 receptors if cells in the endothelial wall. In response homocysteine increased the adhesive molecules on the surface of immune immune cells binding them to the infection causing inflammation.Blockage along the lining of blood vessels can cause cortisol to inhibit IL-10 signalling which regulates inflammation. By disrupting gastric secretions this means the ph levels are not low enough to promote secretions off the digestive enzyme Pepsin. Pepsin not only helps absorption of vitamins and minerals but also helps fight bacteria and viruses and in vitro break down blood clots. Cortisol can also increase TNF-Alpha cytokines by causing muscle cells to stop using glucose and start degranulating proteins. Excessive cortisol production can lead to adrenal fatigue which can cause chronic inflammation, fatigue, digestive issues and autoimmune disease. Disruption to gastric secretions can lead to a condition called Hypochlorhydria or low stomach acid. This means that food cannot be sterilised or digested properly and lead to a build up of bad bacteria and toxins. This can lead to bloating, diarrhoea, vomiting and acid reclux symptoms often misdiagnosed as high stomach acid. The acid reflux can be caused by build up of bad bacteria and toxins pushing out into the base of the oesophagus carrying particles of stomach acid causing inflammation at the base of the oesophagus. Inflammation at the base of the oesophagus can cause the top of the oesophagus to contract causing the sensation of a lump in the throat. Try talking to your doctor about the following. 1. Taking a combination of 4,000 IU of Vitamin D3, C, B12, B5,B6 and magnesium and zinc. (This combination treats adrenal fatigue but also vitamin D blocks the release of Cortisol and lowers the expression of TLR4 proteins) 2. Drink twice daily 250 ml of water with 1/4 teaspoon of salt. This will help to increase electrolytes to treat adrenal fatigue and the virus may be hijacking the protease the body uses to regulate salt and water absorption. 3. Taking a gradual increasing dosage of Betaine HCL (500mg) with Pepsin (24mg) Betaine HCL inhibits TLR4 receptors, lowers key cytokines IL-18, IL1-b and TNF-a. It also increases IL-8 cytokines that promote neutrophils than coordinate T Cell immune response. (In a form of TB IL-8 cytokines were found to bind to the infection and stimulate a CD4+ and CD8 T Cell response) It reverses insulin resistance and lowers cellular atp. Betaine also lowers cortisol and homocysteine and increases testosterone needed to regulate systematic inflammation. Cortisol can also inhibit IL-10 signalling needed to regulate inflammation when there is blockage along the lining of Blood vessels. Betaine HCL with pepsin is ineffective at low dosage but must only be considered under medical supervision as it can affect cellular atp needed to provide energy to cells and the body and cannot be take with aspirin, ibuprofen, Tylenol, steroids or Pepcid Famotidine as it can cause bleeding to the stomach. It also cannot be taken during pregnancy. The dosage is 1 pill with each meal 3 times per day gradually increasing to 2 pills depending on tolerance. If the higher dosage causes nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea then lower the dosage. Again only consider under medical supervision. I hope this information helps

Thank you for your words of encouragement in the video! I got Covid in April of 2022 and still have fatigue and brain fog. Last summer, I was starting to feel a bit better and felt like I was being lazy so I bought a bicycle and went cycling. BIG mistake! My fatigue came back with a vengeance. Now I feel zero guilt about taking a cat nap in the computer chair at home. I just hope I didn't cause a major set back by forcing myself to exercise last summer? I'm kicking myself now of course! I'm also dealing with an ailing, elderly parent and a stressful job. This is adding to my nervous system not being able to relax. Having GAD (General Anxiety Disorder) certainly doesn't exactly help matters.

Currently in phase 3. I agree with everything you said, very good video. I still feel some symptoms (chest pain, light fatigue) when walking above 2000 m altitude or jogging for more than 5 km, but in that case I just stop for a while and it's getting better and better. 1 years and 6 months after mild initial infection. Phase 1 lasted 1 year, phase 2 lasted 5 months, and I'm in phase 3 since approx. 1 month.

Hey, I got covid August 27, 2023. I believe I just entered phase 3 about almost 2 weeks ago. I say that because I felt 90% normal for about 12 days straight, had most of my energy back, felt great even, until like 2 days ago. I started to feel light fatigue like your saying, followed by a light heache. But yeah it seems like the flare-ups and less and less, and weaker than before. I still constantly have this burning sensation in my body though that has pretty much never gone away yet, it almost feels like a low grade fever. I'm just hoping I get back my energy fully again and these ups and downs as far as feeling these weaker symptoms go away.

Stumbled across this video by accident. Although I have not been fully diagnosed as having Long Covid yet I am pretty certain I have it. I have been pushing though illness for around 16 months now and this video has made me realise that I have to genuinely rest and that is the only way to recover, and for that thank you. I am in a difficult situation as I am at school in the UK in my final 2 years where it matters how well you do as it determines your university options and possible career paths so it is difficult for me to rest as to do this could muck up my exam results. I still need to figure this out but this video has helped a lot in my way of understanding how I will get better. And I will say it again, thank you.

There is a great book by Annemarieke Fleming on dealing with fatigue from covid, cancer and chronic diseases. Best I learned is taking multiple 15-20 minute breaks during the day were you lay down flat (or chair back in the car) with your eyes closed (no internet! relaxed music allowed) to teach your body to dial back again and restore your energy. Another tip is learning to do things in order: Thinking brainy stuff - Doing physical stuff - Rest. Since resting right after brainy stuff, the mind doesn't really shut down. She has lots more. It's brand new in Dutch (may 2023) I don't know when there will be an English version.

Thank you for this! My illness started with the 'notavaccine' in 2020 so nobody wanted to deal with it at all for a while. Finally had the battery of tests on heart, lungs, etc. All fine, thank goodness, but I was no better. My GP was sympathetic and good enough to tell me it wasn't all in my head when I asked if that was the problem. Meanwhile, my temper was raging. I was, and am, furious over the whole vax reaction issue. In '21 I came down with the virus itself, which presented in me as similar to a bad, lingering cold. The shot was much worse. Things have been improving this year, though, and it's been a long time since I've had a 'nope day', where there's just no energy for anything. And now, as I'm listening to you and writing this, I have the stupid thing again, like a bad head flu. Can't help but wonder what my system is going to do with it, but your advice will help enormously. Again, thank you. I really thought I was losing my mind.

Seeing someone like you gives hope to this community. Unfortunately every time I felt like I was getting better and leaving phase 1 I would get reinfected or get exposed and have a relapse of symptoms. I have been sick for over 2 years now. I'm a march 2020er (as the long COVID groups call us) and I feel that it has never left my body. I do feel sometimes better if I restrict my diet and also with physical therapy. I think it also has to do with the fact that I live in one of the most densely populated places on the earth NYC. This city especially this time of year is full of germs. I now started wearing a mask again outside as I found when I don't wear a mask I feel more sick. I feel like I'm not allowed to get better because every time I feel like I might make a recovery I get sick again.
