3 Moments That My Art Failed - What Happens When a Client Doesn't Like Your Work?

In this video I talk about three moments that I worked for a client on an image and failed. One story from early in my career, another was during my first painting for Magic: The Gathering, and finally a series of images I did for Legends of Runeterra. All of which were difficult in the moment, but I've learned a lot during those times and hope that I can help others feel more comfortable with the times that they didn't as well as they were hoping with their art.
Feel free to share any personal experiences or stories you have in the comments to help let new and experienced artists know that this is all normal and let's just laugh through the pain together haha.
I can't believe how many people have been continuing to watch and subscribe recently. It means a lot to me. It's crazy to think I've gotten over 10k subs just within the last two months. Thank you everyone! I'll keep the videos comin!

Starting a video with a "Hi" is: - Boring - Normal - Within the natural scope of anyone's expectations Instead, start a video with a "Bye" instead. It's: - Surprising - Unusual - Catches people off guard - Gaslights people into thinking they were drunk and just got back into reality

9 league pieces in 3 months?!?!?! Dude riot are outta their mind for that request smh. And why even ask how many you could take on, only to “um actually “ you and demand essentially double the work. All of that just doesn’t sit well with me. Also great video, I really appreciate the insight, and for what it’s worth I really liked the colors in your og snake final piece :)

When I did my first magic card I had put so much pressure on myself that I had ended up spending over 70 hours and re painting it 5 or 6 times, I turned in a unfinished not rendered final piece. Not to mention I was weeks past the deadline due to me not able to get it right. The art director was really nice about and it and completely understood, I was sure I was never going to get hired again but I’m now on my 4th card! WotC has amazing art directors that are glad to give you a second chance!

I absolutely love this, it’s definitely something that you never see artists talk about but it’s something we’ve all gone through. I think it’s especially difficult because a lot of us are already really critical of our own work so having those fears validated can be super devastating. But it’s important to learn from your missteps and understand why X piece wasn’t up to the quality standard of your other work.

These types of videos should be more common (not just from you in particular, Forrest!). It helps artists of every skill and background understand that getting work from a big company is a fleeting reward. It's easy to set a goal and name a company that we'd love to work for, but it's unimaginably harder meeting their expectations once that chance is given. Also, when you said you've gone through 1 year with that commitment to never fail a client again, that hits very close to home. Appreciate your time and effort in putting this video out for us!

Love your videos man! Its understandably a rare thing for an artist to discuss the inner details of projects that don't go super well and to only focus on the successful ones. ITs a vulnerable topic to talk about and I think for a lot of artists its almost like it highlights a insecurity/imposter symdrome they might have internally. But I think what you're talking about is super important, we're living at a time now where social media and is pushing for almost 'perfect' content from artists and I think younger and inexperienced artist can get strongly demotivated by an impossible standard/super ability to make perfect art at all times. So thank you very much for these videos they are very insightful.

sometimes a client will have vague notions of what they want that that don't make visual sense ("everything needs to look BIG, you can't put anything small in the picture") and you are fighting a losing battle, but sometimes you get a finished piece back with some significant feedback that seems demoralizing, but can jolt you into taking an extra step beyond what you otherwise would and results in a vastly superior piece of art with relatively small extra time investment. A lot of this comes down to learning to interpret what the client wants when they may not be able to communicate the idea clearly. A collaborative piece where both parties are open minded is usually how the best work is created, and this takes humility and thick skin on both sides.

  • @ForrestImel

Most of the time it is up to the client on whether they think it is a lost cause or not. In the case of LoR, most of the images I did were needed to be redone by another studio. But in Magic’s case they trusted I could get it to a presentable state so they just offered a couple rounds of feedback and then we were good. It really depends. Most of the time clients have been kind enough to still pay for the work though. I’ve yet to do work for a client that then said they weren’t gonna pay me the full amount still, I’m sure it happens but I haven’t experienced it yet.

It's becoming harder to answer this question since I'm now becoming an old grumpus that has to resort to saying "back in my day." I honestly don't know where the best place to get work is nowadays, especially for smaller commissions or job offers. It used to be that I'd go and post on like 6-7 different art forums that had specific "jop" sections, but I don't think any of those forums are still around. If I were to guess, reddit, discord channels, maybe even places like etsy, might be a good place to start advertising your work to look for commissions. Eventually when you get a large enough network of artists on social media you can just ask people for recommendations or suggestions and say you are looking for work. Usually people are nice enough to share it around and if your work is of a certain level you are pretty likely to get some type of work.
