How much money do artists make?
Only took me about 2 years but I finally came out with another video! Not a lot of artists out there give the straight numbers related to commercial work in the games industry so I thought I'd do a video where I do just that. If you want to know how much artists make that work for Magic: The Gathering, Blizzard, Riot, etc. this is the video for that. If you feel there was any information that I didn't go over that you'd like to hear more about let me know in the comments and I'd be happy to do a future video about it.

Great video man! It's nice to see someone talking about this stuff.
Making a video about how you time manage and maybe a day of freelance would be great. Do you have a work out routine or what is food dieting is like. I think these could be important topics to talk about.
Thanks for sharing this Forrest, there is a shortage of people talking about the financial side of the industry. Great video!
Thanks a lot for being open about this. Most new artists needs that.
This is such a big boost of motivation for an aspiring artist like me, thank you for sharing your experiences with us.
Wizard’s should’ve paid u a lot for designing Dockside Extortionist! It’s one of the most popular cards in magic the gathering right now!
Holy crap. Those numbers are insane for someone like me who lives in Poland (or any eastern european country). Our minimum monthly wage is around 500$... If you earn above 1000$ per month you are considered middle-class. Motivation boost! :P

This info is so helpful!!! also lovin that shaman king print. i see you!! :)
Just found your channel through the Caitlyn splash video. Really like your easy going and candid way of talking and explaining. An update to this video would be awesome with how much the economy has change over the last couple of years, if you are up for it :D

Honestly, as much as I wish these rates have changed with the times, they really haven't as far as I know. All sorts of different clients raise their rates for different reasons, I think out of all of these listed the only client I know to have officially raised their rates is Hearthstone, I think they pay a couple hundred more dollars nowadays.

@@ForrestImel Thanks for the update, but honestly disheartening to hear, glad Hearthstone is stepping up at least
I already thought greatly about you but this video has shown me that you are even better than I thought, specially that Shaman King frame on the back, that is bonus points
Awesome to see a new video! You are always a wealth of information!
AMAZING! Such a great video and thanks for sharing it all!
I love how simple and clear you are. it's honest, it's usefull, thanks a lot for sharing this and if you ever want to make more video like this I'll be waiting for it !
Amazing video! Thanks for making these.
So great that you came out and talked shop this way. It's awesome to see any industry, but especially art where, as you mentioned, it can be hard to pin down norms and numbers.
Wow man.. thank you so much for sharing this with us! Really helpful video!
Would love more stuff similar to this, talking to other artists about their experiences. And how artists even become financially solvent in the first place.
Great info! Can't wait for more videos!
I worked as a comic book variant cover artist at IDW, DYNAMITE, IMAGE, and BOOM! Studios and I averaged $300 per cover/ trading card.
Great video man, thanks for this!
Thank you for this video. Also +1 for the time managing video. It'd be great to see how you balance your time with all these illustrations you do.
Hope you continue to make videos, they're awesome :D
Really awesome information! Thank you for sharing this!
Thanks for sharing all that, it was really informative. I appreciate you sharing specifics about your income for various years.
Golden info ! thanks for sharing.
Great video!!! Thanks so much for this. Would you consider doing a video on how to get into an outsourcing studio? Always been so difficult to get a full time job in those places.
Definitely insightful. Thank you!
Literally panicked this week when i was asked what my day rate is by a studio for the first time!! I was so excited but so confused and did the exact same asking people around hahaha Thank you for this!! Top tier content ♥

I was just watching a video by Dorian iten and he was talking about his social anxiety and how he is experiencing it in live time, flight/fight mode. That vid kinda made me sad cuz I saw myself in his words lol. But we can all get through it :D and your following luv u

Unfortunately, I don't. I'm sure if you find some and message them, someone will be nice enough to give you some more info.
Okay but that stingmon tho!
Hey man, thanks for this video! Sharing with friends 😀
The whole video was me like - oohhh that's really good too know...that Shaman King poster tho o3o
For someone from Mexico those are huge numbers, I hope I can be good enough someday to charge for my art that well, thanks for the information is something I don't see discussed enough.
Thank - You Sir for this Information by the way I request you can you make a vlog video like a day in a life of a Concept Artist , it would be very amazing to watch it . Can you please make it ??
Thanks very much for sharing this! Could you go into more detail about copyright, licencing and pricing, is this pricing including copyrights? Would be great to see a video on the legal side of things and what to expect
Hi Forrest, thanks for explaining this in such detail. What are some AA companies that I can try to reach to get work? I wrote down a few to try, I would like any suggestions on how to reach out properly to get to do some TCG or tabletop game art, and maybe even mobile game art!
Question, how does an artist go about doing work for places like Pathfinder, magic the gathering, or hearthstone?
I once again was searching for a way to reach Hearthstone but with no avail.I think I will just send them a darn letter with a portfolio!
Great video but had to subscribe because the shaman king poster.

This was legitimately interesting to listen to. I don't know if you answer questions, but I had a thought. Do you think artists that decide to go down the erotic route end up permanently capping their earning potential pretty low? I'd imagine most companies wouldn't want anything to do with them and they end up stuck in the private commission zone.
@ForrestImel
2 жыл бұрын
You might become a little less likely to work with particular companies, but private commission rates can sky rocket when you are an artist willing to go the erotic route. Also, from what I've heard from other erotic artists is that the myth of blacklisting those artists is not as serious as some people make it out to be. People don't care if you draw dicks in your spare time if you can still draw their IP's character really well.
In terms of character concept art what is it their paying you for? E.g like designing the character / sketches and development. How much of package of art are you providing in terms of designs. Also love you bro your awesome I've watched your journey over the last atleast 8 years super inspiring
the dog (heart shaped eyes) we want him too
i summon you!!! please come back😭
Which company would you recommend for people just getting into the art industry? And can you do work for them from a computer at home?
Thank you for the video. I've got a question - is royalty even a thing nowadays in freelancing? Or is it always work for hire type of contracts? I mean obviously those "serious" contracts, not "oh I'm going to develop next LoL and you'll get rich so work for us for free".
@ForrestImel
2 жыл бұрын
Some small companies "offer" royalties, but most of that offer is based on them not being able to hire you for the full amount you'd like in that moment and is meant to manipulate you into thinking it's a worthwhile gig because it COULD pay out more over time. I'll be coming out with a video on this in the future, but if a passive income stream is what you're hoping for as an artist there are a lot of routes you can personally take without having to rely on a client.
would you make a video recommending for artists starting at level 0? you know... the small comissions
hi sir i really big fan of your work i just want to know what is it mean to polish and how to study polish volumes i know it is not allowed to share this things but i really would love to know how to polish
So I have 2 questions: I’m trying to find work in this space for drawing character illustrations for these companies; how do I find work based on that? Where do I go to find those that need it? If that makes sense.
@ForrestImel

I'll have a video in the future that goes over this more, but to summarize, it's just about having skills and making connections. Getting in touch with companies you want to work for or artists whos work you look up to.
