First of all, it is an honor to have you here on my channel. I've been watching your videos for many years and have learned so much from you. The passion that I have to constantly innovate and to make existing things better is partly due to you. That insert was something that was on my mind for a long time. I wanted something that gave me the zero clearance and it had to be removable. So, this is my solution. But I am already thinking further now and I want to add an extra dust collector on the miter saw. I let it hang around in my mind for a few more weeks and maybe a good solution will come. @@christofix I haven't seen anything on your channel about adding dust collection for your miter saw, did you ever tackle this? When looking at the removable inserts, I was thinking you could add a port for a shop vac nozzle to the rear and off to the side, and using a jigsaw or some other cutter, run the kerf back to the port. It would pull dust right off the blade, and as the dust has very few outlets to escape, it seems to me like using your removable inserts would help you capture way more dust than the shrouds that they put on those things. Just stumbled across your channel, SUPER impressed with your ideas, you really give inspiration to those of us watching your projects! Kudos to you.

Nice video, very slick. The music was great - gave me 80s chills. I've got a very simple single-bevel 10" Hitachi. It's my first and only miter and I've really enjoyed it. It's a little lonely since I got a table saw, but it's great when I need long boards crosscut. It's also much more usable since I built a (unnecessarily huge 8') miter table based on plan from Family Handyman Magazine. I need to make a custom insert for it at some point.

I have just purchased a new Mitre Saw. Its a Mastercraft brand from Canadian Tire. I suspect that its out of alignment, thanx to this video I can now check to see if it actually is out of alignment. So thank you.

@@christofix the mitre saw is working really well. The only thing I would change is its soft start motor... I'd like something a little quicker in the future.

Hello Geoffrey. I also had a miter saw that for many years did not cut square 90 degree cuts. I didn’t figure out how to fix this until this year. Try to adjust the back fence to be square to the blade. I usually read instructions so I have no idea how I missed this. But I always thought that it was in the adjustment knob or in the saw arm, but in between projects I had some spare time to inspect the saw and try my theories. After exhausting all ideas I put the saw back together and just happened to glance at the fence mounting bolts….I had a eureka moment and have been cutting easy 90s and smooth 45s ever since. Makes me crave to get out into my shop to work on new projects knowing that I don’t have to “fight” with my tools to get the job done. Btw excellent video and ideas Christofix. This vid just earned a sub. Cheers!

Another great video Chris👍 I use a Kobalt name brand miter saw. It's "ok". It's a sliding miter saw so my only complaint is that it's too deep. So if I made a bench for it it would stick out from the wall pretty far. Oh well...

Hi, You did exactly as I thought, making three backblocks. I prefer to put the miter saw on a lower cabinet with the surface flush to the other cabinets. Miter Saw: Bosch GCM 12 GDL. Thanks for sharing Willy from Belgium. 't Is weer in orde, do zeker zo verder. 🤗🤗🤗

Nice idea , what prevents the insert block from getting flicked upwards by the action of the saw ?

Actually, nothing is needed for that. The friction of the block with the holder ensures that this block remains firmly in place. Since the saw blade never comes into contact with this block either, as there is a small gap between the slot and the saw blade, I'm not worried about this though. Love your creativity. I have a Ryobi that I've had for years. It's done well for a basic non-sliding saw.

Nice video, I really liked your support jigs in part 3. I have a questions about the inserts in part 2, Do they affect sawdust? I have a Dewalt DW709 and I would think it would not throw the sawdust where I want it to go. I've built a dust box around my whole saw, with a dust collector in-line with where most of the sawdust is thrown by the saw.

Thanks for your kind words, Kevin. To answer your question, the dust collector of this miter saw is behind the blade and because of the inserts, the dust is forced in that direction. So for my miter saw this works really well. A dust box around the miter saw is a very good idea. when I will build a miter saw station I want to build a dust box too, but first I need to build some other stuff, so this idea is actually temporarily.

I have a Ridgid dual bevel sliding 12" (my dad got it for me). Right now it sits on a foldable work table by Worx (my dad-in-law got me). The little plastic pieces hold the thing in place...so for now.... That is my set up until i have more time/money to make a designated work table. This makes it semi portable. i lift up the table with the saw on it. Very manageable if I need to cut something large. I just move it outside where I have more room.

I have 2 saws.. both are sliding compound mitre saws. I use one for straight cuts and the other is for angles. 1 is a Makita the other is an AEG. This is a great video.. how do you go now with the sawdust seeing there is no exit for it other than from the back of the blade higher up seeing you have made those blocks.

Thanks for your great comment Tim! This machine unfortunately only has 1 dust outlet and that is the one at the top. I'm going to think again about how I could solve this. The blocks now push the dust more towards the dust discharge, so that the dust discharge works better. I still have to test this because for the time being I am using my brother's vacuum cleaner and currently the vacuum cleaner is not here. Keep an eye on my channel for a solution. @@christofix I have a large semi-industrial vac connected to the dust port via a cyclone into a collection bucket. I am always trying to find a good way to collect more of the sawdust as most times it ends up all over the bench anyway.. I have seen a few good ideas over the years for collection but the issue for me is that my saw gets moved onto the bench and then off the bench when not needed so I need something that can be moved with the saw or quickly attached and removed when the saw is not in use, and that seems to be the issue for me as most of the ones I've seen on the net is a permanent setup. My benchtop is an 1800mm x 2400mm x 16mm piece of MDF on top of my homemade bench.

DeWalt flexvolt. 12" plugged into the wall mostly. Awesome saw. Can you explain why the central blocks are so substantial? Is it just one method to give backing to a cut? I can visualize something simpler but I may well be missing something. Thanks for the video.

Christofix - DIY Projects It's hard to visualize all the obstacles that could interfere. So here are just two thoughts. You've helped inspire me to get around to building a fence for my saw so when I get to it I may have better insight. First I was thinking that you could make the fences slightly longer and cut slots where the bolts mount it to the original fence so you can slide it in and out. The other idea would be to do something similar to what you did but less layers. As long as the piece is adequately supported in the back of the fence then I don't see a problem. Like I said, I haven't tackled this yet so I'm going to keep your approach in my mind as I do. I may well end up doing the same. :)

Christofix - DIY Projects Nice of you to say thanks. Now I can argue both sides of the fence (dad joke intended). Possibly the sliding fence could be a little flappy, less supported than what you've built. Not sure if that's an issue or can be addressed in some way. I'll keep thinking about it.

Great video as always Chris! I have a Ryobi 10" Compound Miter Saw. Don't get one. They are not very accurate and the dust collection is TERRIBLE! I tend to use my table saw to make angled miter cuts instead.

Indeed, that's why I also made a second block for when I want to cut at a different angle. You can also see this in the video. When I want to saw a specific angle I can simply delete the blocks and I always have the perfect zero clearance.

I Know what you mean now, thanks for letting me know. My miter saw doesn't have a dust collection in front of the machine, just one at the back of the sawblade. But indeed, if i Had a miter saw with a dust collection in front it would be a problem. Maybe i will figure that out when I have a new miter saw, this one is just a cheap starting model.
