We have had a busy week! We were unable to finish the tech video for this week, so enjoy this massive battle! Disclaimer, this is a very large battle, expect low FPS moments! Also, our sound engine is WIP, some of the sound bugs out. One more thing to keep in mind, the map is WIP and is pretty bare right now.

Medieval archers usually carried 2 sheaves of arrows (24 arrows per sheaf) into battle. 250,000 archers would only need half a sheaf of arrows to defeat 3 million soldiers if they didn't miss a single arrow and given the size of the attacking force in this video it would be literally impossible for the archers to miss the enemy soldiers.

As we approached the scene of the previous day's battle, two things immediately struck me. The sound and the smell were both overpowering and unlike anything I had ever experienced before. The cacophony of millions of birds all flapping their wings, pecking and squawking at each other. It all blended into a mush of white noise, like the sound of an entire village being thrown into a canyon, only to echo and reverberate off its walls for all eternity. High screeches, low scrapes, it was maddening. The second thing I noticed was the smell. It hit me almost as soon as I could hear the birds. As we got closer to the battlefield the faint hint of death became an overwhelming wave of purification and decay. I could see the light refract of the thick, oily, corrupted excuse for air. With every breath I choked, it felt as though I was actively inviting death inside me. After vomiting the entire contents of my stomach and sufficiently wrapping my face in cloth, we pressed on. The sight of the field was no less ghastly than it's smell or sound. The valley was almost beautiful at a distance. It appeared as though fields of golden grass spanned the valley as far as one could see. It was only upon closer observation that the facade began to reveal its horrific nature. The grass didn't waver. The stalks of golden grass revealed themselves to be arrows, all embedded in the bodies of honorable and brave men. Though we did not want to, to get a scope of the damage, we had to venture into the field of corpses just so that we might see its boundaries. The task took a great deal of effort. At several points my companions and I would crest what appeared to be a hill, only for a face of the hill to slough off, revealing there was not earth, but more corpses underneath. One could not begin to estimate the enormity of the losses sustained here. If one ventured here not knowing this place's history, they might assume they had died and wandered into hell itself. We depart soon, but my memories of this forsaken place never will. Will these men ever see burials? Will their bones cover the valley in a white blanket or will someone come for them? I will try not to think on these matters any further.

Well, medieval Europe had roughly 150,000-300,000 knights at any one time, depending on before or after the Black Death plague. There needs to be 15 generations or roughly 345 years to have around 3 million knights. So that is likely false, but it still is an incredible number, though.

Probably thought they would just need to run faster than arrows and a shield would be too heavy (and with archers shooting at different range, except using several shields, arrows would find their way where the shield isn't - plus if like bannerlords games, shields bombarded so much would break to give a chance to archers, so until 3M knights advance in roman formation, not useful to have every knight a lone shield)

After that its just the Mongols and its not until the armies of Europe during Napoleon's reign that several nations can do that.

A magician never tells their secrets... but I'm not a magician, just a failed computer science student. So here's my hot take ( *TL;DR it's a bunch of copying and deleting* ): It looks like a really clever "Level Of Detail" system. It smartly un-renders things when they're too far away to make out. Look closely at 0:36 and you'll see how the "density" of the crowd gradually lowers. You can even see the individual squares as the gaps between each person grows. Other things a LOD system can do would be removing textures, skipping animations, disabling projectiles. Hell, they could be stick figures! From 10km away you wouldn't notice anyway... In a huge battle, two people standing next to each other will do the same thing and die at the same time. Just copy one guy like twenty times and change it up a little, offset any animations by some random frames and they'll look like different people from far away.

It would be cool if there was a limited supply of ammunition. Maybe not individually, but for a whole group and for every arrow shot a arrow will be subtracted from the total supply (so that it doesnt require too much calculation). I would love to see such a feature, because archers currently seem to be pretty op and not really realistic. But the game looks great already, i would also buy it in this state if i could!

In the manga Kingdom there is a coalition war in which each size has 600000 soldiers (this is based on a real war in ancient China). The mangaka draw it perfectly just like what is happening in this video. I wanna imagine myself as Shin (the mc) and fight in this war so much lol.

A trained archer could shoot 12 arrows a minute, but some sources say that the most skilled archers could fire twice this number. The arrow could wound at 250 yards, kill at 100 yards and penetrate armor at 60 yards.
