There was coop in Bloodborne! You just had to ring a bell and have someone else ring another bell. But there were also hunter NPCs that you could summon for bosses. I think those got added in the DLC but the friendly NPC you had was ironically the Father Gascoigne Summon.

i am pretty sure he knows there was coop. i think he was more referring to the fact that the game was never ported since it's a console-exclusive, limiting the ability for co-op. i also assume you can't play online with these console mods like you would be able to on PC (or the performance being unstable/worse or something)

No that's still his 1st phase. 2nd phase is when he turns into a wolf-man. Father Gascoigne can be summoned as a NPC ally to fight Cleric Beast, which is most likely what's happening here. not entirely sure what would trigger it though. my guess is that NPC summons themselves are random, and instead of summoning an enemy for this part, it's summoned an ally NPC. (edit: nvm, he mentions it at 28:00)
