Hi everybody! I'm Kevin Weiss from bodyperformance.net and today I'm teaming up with Rip Toned Fitness Products to talk about three important tips for weight trainers that will get them on the road to success.
I've been training a long time, 35 years to be exact. Along the way, I've won national and world titles in natural body building and drug-free powerlifting.
I've set some national and world records, I have even tried my hand at a few strongman competitions, along the way with the victories I had a lot of mistakes and defeats, these mistakes taught me more than the victories ever could.
I hope by sharing these lessons with you, I can help you avoid common errors that will hold back your gains.
Tip number 1 - Focus on mastering the basic exercises. No matter what you do in life, mastering the fundamentals is essential to long term success. This will get you 80% of the way to where you want to go, but it's not gonna happen overnight.
The basic movements are going to be the big multi joint movements like the squat, the deadlift, the bench press, the over head press, rows, pull-ups, these big exercises are going to build the foundation that you can build your future gains on.
When I first started, I did focus on most of these lifts but I did neglect the very important squat and deadlift. Luckily, I started when I was 12 years old and by the time I was 14 or 15 I realized the error of my ways and started doing these religiously.
This allowed me to catch up and wasn't too far behind. The thing is, now after training for 35 years these basic movements are still the cornerstone of all my programs. The fundamentals never go out of style.
Tip number 2 - Get some quality instruction, this goes hand in hand with tip number 1. The compound movements are all quality exercises but without proper execution they can be dangerous.
I've been coaching people for nearly 20 years and I still spend 90% of my time adjusting people's form and correcting them on the basic movements. These are not just beginners either some of these people have been training for 10 or more years. Imagine the look on their face when they realize they've been doing something wrong for more than a decade.
Don't be one of those people whose wasting their time training dangerously instead of making quality gains. Find a qualified instructor who has some respectable credentials and take a few lessons.
The investment will be more than worth it. Also in the coming weeks we're going to be posting some instructional videos of these basic exercises, so stay tuned for that.
Tip number 3 - Have patience. Nobody wants to hear this but that does not make it any less true.
Quality results take time, there is no easy money and there is no free rides, just like getting a university degree, building a business or saving money, it's long-term consistent effort. That's gonna pay off in the long run. All three of these tips are closely related and that's not by accident. Focus on the basic exercises and quality execution. Now show up, day after day, week after week, month after month, your persistence and consistency will pay off with gains you never would have imagined.
These gains are not just physical either, the mental toughness and fortitude that is built with long-term discipline will carry far beyond the gym.
