3 Hard Lessons Learned about Golf Club Fittings (Beginners' Advice)

Спорт

This video is dedicated to my fellow "ITS THE CLUB, NOT ME" support group. We are always welcoming new members. However, not all club fittings and fitters are created equal and if you are considering getting some new sticks... learn from some of my mistakes and hopefully save you money or make the most out of your experience.
It would be amazing to be properly fit by ‪@trottiegolf‬ ‪@TAYLORMADEGOLF‬ or Ian & Mikey ‪@clubchampionmedia‬ . And if I'm really dreaming.... being invited out to TPI ‪@titleist‬ and then me and Max Homa could be like best friends and stuff. Justin Thomas is cool too, he could third wheel.

Hey man, great video and I agree with everything you’ve said. My additional input (as if it’s needed) 1 - Don’t expect miracles from a fitting. 2 - Pay for lessons, get consistent, then get fit. 3 - beware of the upgrades. In my driver fitting the fitter really pushed a premium shaft upgrade for what equated 1 yd dispersion and 3 yds of distance. 4 - drop brand allegiance - if you’re not one of the few thousand people on earth being paid by a brand to play, you don’t owe any allegiance to the brand, get what works for you.

Awesome points... definitely want to be able to hit the ball with some semblance of consistency. I think that what I meant to imply about being around the Break 100 mark. Really great point about the upselling also, I should have mentioned it. Thanks for the input! Cheers!

I’m about a 25 HC. I just went through a club fitting at PXG. I’ve been playing my Ping i10s for a very long time but had some serious lag in my game during grad school and baby days. Been picking it back up in the last year. Being knowledgeable about the metrics before you go is a must. I agree with the driver challenge. They can manipulate that so easily. Driver is the only club I didn’t buy from them, and the fitter actually told me he agreed with me. Everything else though is dialed in nicely. Loft, lie, swing weight, feel. And my distance, landing angle, spin, etc… are much improved over my other clubs. I’m excited to start dialing these in and having my mind at ease that the club variable is removed from my mind so I can focus on fundamentals. Much better experience than just trying out a club off the rack. 15 years ago this wouldn’t have helped me. But I think I’ll see a good bump here from this. So I’d agree with your assessment on “when” to get fit.

Really appreciate the comment. My other tip for “coming back into golf” is just play a lot of golf not “golf swing” and manage expectations. You’ll easily get down to a 15 pretty quickly I’m sure. Cheers!

Great video. I Just had a fitting a couple of weeks ago and I'm frothing at the mouth to get my new goodies. One tip that I might give - Don't get fitted so early in the year that you haven't quite knocked the rust off your swing. If you go to the range a few times and play a few times and your swing changes a little more than you thought it would, you might have just been fit for the wrong stuff.

Terrific lessons, each one! Yes, get your numbers and specs in line, bring them, compare then don't commit... come back another day and repeat the process. Fitters worth a nickel won't have a problem with this, but you'll likely need to seek out an independent fitter.

The few outfits that I went to seemed only interested in sell me new clubs. It’s like a long infomercial that I paid for. Eventually I seek out experienced good golfers in my area for advice and with some common sense, put together a great set of clubs for my self. I learned that excellence doesn’t have to be expensive.

Agreed, I think there is a common thought that a fitter will get you "dailed in", but it some capacity they are there to sell you a golf club (which I'm sure has some incentives tied to it). I still think it is a cool and valuable process... I love this kind of stuff... but just don't want people to be taken advantage of. Cheers!

Great tips! Coincidently, I'm looking for a new set now (browser cookies are a real thing). I've been trying various brands and I'm down to the Ping I230 and Titleist T150. Cheers!

Wow. Can't believe Club Champion would try to pass off a used putter as new. For a self proclaimed "elite fitter", I have heard more than a few bad experiences.

The explanation I got was that when the Club Champion employee was bending the putter to my specifications he put it in the machine wrong, which caused the scratches. Still doesn't explain it being dirty in general and the disgusting grip end though.

Great video - I totally agree that the club doesn't matter, it's the loft, stupid! Nobody's telling us this! The dispersion on your old Cobra was better, the distance was the same.......I´m not even sure the shafts matter much. We used to say "it ain't the arrow, it's the archer " (except we used a probably racially inappropriate stereotype). But hey ho, club fitters have to make a living too. I bought Miura blades (10 Hcp) against the fitter`s advice because they're beautiful. My present pro thinks I´m making the game more difficult so I bought a second hand set of Mizunos "more apprpriate" to my playing ability. The difference? NONE. Dispersion and distance over 2 rounds and a number of practice sessions have been imperceptible. Here's the rub. Not only are the Mizuno Pros with their hollow head technology far more advanced than the forged blades, they have a much lighter shaft. They are 40g lighter. Both are Regular... So what can I do to improve my golf? Practice. Spend the money I would otherwise spend on club porn on lessons and practice balls. I hate to disagree with you but I think this is even more relevant regarding the putter. It's a piece of metal on the end of a stick travelling at the speed of an arthritic cart horse. Who needs technology? For a laugh I bought a 65 - 70 year old John Letters Golden Goose for less than $20 on Ebay. I put just as well/badly as the balanced/soft faced/overweight putters I've had in the past. My point is, do as I did - buy the clubs that you like or desire for whatever reason but they won't help you play better golf if you're a normal handicap golfer. Unless, that is, you BELIEVE they're helping you........ Do you still have the Nikes? Now THAT would make an interesting comparison video, knowing what you now know!

I wish I still had the Nike blades, but I sold them to recoup some of the new P790 clubs cost... seeing pictures of them made me regret that. As far as the putter fitting comment, let me clarify. I could honestly careless about the "technology" blah blah of these $300+ putters, but getting assessed for the proper length, lie, and loft for the putter and then type (blade, mallet, etc.) that allows you to make a consistent roll on the line you intend will improve your putting (along with practice). Outside of that, its just like you said... buy what makes you feel good and in my case I feel looks cool. Thanks for the comment, cheers!
