My 1964 rambler automatic transmission had a front and rear pump, the driveshaft drove the rear pump and I could compression start it at 4 or 5 miles an hour it also had an enclosed drive shaft, limited slip and front seats that folded down literally flat with the back seat, so you could sleep in it camping etc... they were one heck of a car!

If you have a really, really old vehicle, the automatic transmission may have a rear pump. If you are pointed downhill on a grade or incline, you can let it roll and it will start, although you cannot start it with a short push like you can a manual. Tried it with a 1966 Impala with a Powerglide and it did work. GM Powerglide 1967 and older had a rear pump, but if it was rebuilt or swapped, the rear pump may no longer be there. Other vintage models also have rear pumps. Some people claim certain later model automatic transmission can be push started. Possibly, having the vehicle rolling somehow generates some hydraulic pressure. All you can do is to do your research and test it on a long, mild incline to see if it works.

One time I had a dead alternator.... I drove the whole way to the shop in reverse, with (thankfully a looonnnngggg) set of cables connected to my boys car... I had no way to tow it and the mechanic didn’t have a tow truck or wanna let me use his jumper box to get there. Well I got it there. 😂 wasn’t a fun time we had maybe a foot at best In between both cars, had to drive the exact same speed and make sure we didn’t crash. Halfway there we actually swapped spots. It was harder to follow then actually drive in reverse because the following car has to keep up to match speeds of the car in reverse and make sure they break in time and time the see there’s slack on the cables.prob shoulda just linked 2 sets of cables to give us more room for play but the only time we lost connection was in the main ave making a left hand turn, thankfully though the shop was right there and my boy was able to roll halfway into the lot lol. Then the shop owner said “if I knew you were gonna go threw all that I would have gave you the jumper box to use” 🤦🏻‍♂️ I asked him 2 times. Told him I’ll give him 200 just to hold till I got back with it and he didn’t wanna let me use it. What else did he expect me to do when he said “if you can get it here in a hour I’ll do it today if you get here after that you’ll have to wait till Monday..... I was running outta time so it was by any means necessary

Good video. Long ago a Push worked with an auto trans BUT TOOK MUCH MORE SPEED. This would be even more dangerous today because of the Speed required and power steering & power brakes NOT working until after the car started. I Was riding shotgun decades ago in a 57 Chevy with AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. Car wouldn’t start. Got a push. At about 35-45 MPH my cousin shifted from neutral to low and it started and ran fine.

People have become so accustomed to buying newer vehicles all the time that the "common" part became uncommon to the point these videos are needed. Good tips, hope it can help some of the younger people out of a bind when they find themselves stranded.

You must be kidding, if someone without much auto mechanic knowledge and can start their car after following your recommendations, I will be quite surprised! A non starting vehicle is one of the hardest problem to diagnose in my opinion, particularly with nowadays fully computerized models without a computer hook up. I have been working on car for almost forty years as an amateur, my last job was a service consultant for a major commercial truck dealership, and you know what, no computer no proper diagnosis.

A not uncommon problem is the neutral safety switch on the transmission which does not allow the starter to turn when the vehicle is in gear. So if your battery appears good and nothing happens do this before you start pounding things. Shift the transmission in and out of park to try and reseat the neutral safety switch and if the car starts you know you need to replace that switch. If you think it is the relay in the fuse box (modern cars usually have two boxes, on inside the cab and one under the hood) do this before trying to jumper the relay with wire. These relays are simple relays and are used for various functions. Find a matching relay and swap them. If the car now starts and the function of the socket that now has the suspected bad relay does not you fund the bad relay and got your vehicle started. Just try to swap out with a relay for a noncritical function like windows or audio. If you have a dead battery and it is cold warm the battery up by turning on the headlights for a minute or two. If it staterts determine why the battery was low. Low battery problem may be worn out battery, bad alternator, loose belt. A common problem is the battery is fine but the starter will not turn or just hear the relay clicks if not getting enough power because of poor battery cable connection at the battery. Remove and clean battery terminals and battery posts. If it starts now you have found and corrected the problem.

The reason they make so few manual transmission cars is because their drivers don't get bored with them. Once the shine dulls on an automatic, it's time to replace it. I don't know what I'm going to do when my car starts falling apart. Driving an automatic is a chore.

I like your take on this. however, a completely dead car will need some power to the computer to push start it. some alternators need some power before they can get excited enough to produce power. in other words, some newer cars cannot be push started unless they have enough voltage for the alternator to power up. But, most cars can from my experience. Great Video.

It could also be the Neutral Safety Switch on an Automatic Transmission. Often, shifting through the gears, trying to start it in neutral or simply holding the Shifter firmly into Park Position will do the job. Common in older vehicles.
