3 Day Solo Firewood Haul at My Cabin in the Woods

In this video I gather firewood for my off grid cabin in the woods. I drive my truck down the nearby forest roads to find dead trees that have fallen into the roadside ditches and turnouts. Using my Makita xcu04 electric battery powered chainsaw, I cut the logs into pieces that I split and stack.

Having the electric chainsaw is definitely nice in certain situations. Like where he cut an awkward piece off a log when he was splitting. But, I can't imagine this wouldn't have been a million times easier with a 20"-24" bar on a gas chainsaw.

i agree. Gaspowered Chainsaws tends to have higher cutting power and more horsepowers to get through bigger pieces. I would also agree with the people saying that long logs of 10 foot or so would be better seeing that the bending and walking constantly back and forth is more exhausting than picking up 3 smaller logs than picking up one long log. Its the same amount of weight in the end. The question is just how fast you can do it without breaking your back xD

One of the biggest things I learned when hand splitting is to get an old tire that fit a 20" rim, put the piece or pieces in the tire, keeps them from going everywhere and saves yourself from bending down and re-adjusting them again to re-split. Got my tire for free at the local gas station.

I'm a kind of battery expert. You're right, if you can balance the work of the chainsaw between high rpm and being still able to cut gonna save you a lot of work for your batteries. Not just because they gonna last longer for that session of work, but generally, they gonna last longer. Less engine load is less amp hours out of the battery, and less stress. Bring always the big battery with you, because when you discharge the battery you are probably in the 10% area or less. The more you keep in that area, the more you ruin the battery. Lithium is really sensitive, If you are low on voltage charge it asap

The Cant will make it easier to get the logs where you want them and be able to spin the log to get the bottom cut and the rake will be a lot easier to rake up the small branches off the road. Your Dad was so right about washing the door jams of your vehicle. I used to detail cars for my Dad, he owned a full service gas station. He sold used cars as a side hustle, he paid me $50-100 per car back in the 60's. It beat baby sitting for 50 cents an hour. You might think about buying a larger chainsaw, they do the work instead of you working so hard. Good tools are the best investment you can ever make for the work load. Love your cabin it is so perfect. Peace

Building a woodshed against the cabin is convenient however it promotes rodents and termites in your cabin. It’s why most folks build a woodshed away from their cabin and just bring a handful on their porch during the winter that gets used on a steady basis so no nest is built there. Some of those woods look like they’re directly lying on the ground and due to the excessive rain associated with the Pacific Northwest you should built a platform to get them off the ground to stay dry.

I live in the pnw as well so we’re cutting similar wood, I’m not sure if you’ve tried one out before but I love splitting with a fiskars splitting axe opposed to a maul. Weighs a lot less and I think it splits better honestly. Something to try out if you haven’t, they’re only about $60. I can split with it all day and not get whooped like a maul does.

Living in that climate, it's time to upgrade the chainsaw. I could cut up a pile that big in under an hour with a fuel chainsaw and those batteries aren't cheap these days and the high load tools like grinders tend to burn them out. Less time cutting equals more time on other things.

42:00 If pieces of wood are left unattended for a period of time, I use to put them on pallets. So they are not soaking moist from the ground. And keeping the dirt off them.
