    Hi Dan! I met you on the trail you were prepping for in this video (I was the one with the pack dog in desperate need of water...) So nice to meet you out there and then come back to watch this video. So, did you bring the chair and/or camera? From what I saw, you were barely carrying sleeping gear - nice, tight packing. As you tell from my gear, I go old school. My pack is 32 years old. My sleeping bag (quilt?) is 20+ years. Still use a whisper-lite, and I loved sleeping in the hammock. It replaces both a tent and a chair! It also has a bug net, so no need for that. Cotton bandanas, old soccer shorts and wool shirts. Also all about 25+ years old... Admittedly, I need to upgrade a few items, and I'm grateful for your information on what's out there! Thanks for the water and the GutHook advice! I hope you avoided the Wild Parsnip, and I hope you and your friend keep contemplating science as you hike along!

    I bought the outIdoor vitals also- I found that my buff makes a GREAT cover sheet/wrap to my inflatable pillow. I recommend doing a throughout wash of your buff at your last pre-dinner water hole- no needs to sleep on old sweat.

    In my group, if someone asks that question, the answer is always "yes". We always want the other guy to bring too much stuff so we can give him crap. But then when he is enjoying the extra item he brought along, we are all jealous; and hoping to take advantage of it when he isn't around. I'm usually the guy bringing the chair and when I return from whatever task I am doing, someone else is enjoying it when I get back.

  • @logun1970
    @logun19704 жыл бұрын

    I have been very interested in what the cost of going UL would be so I did a little research this morning. Using most of the stuff on the list (including the chair and just 1 pair of socks) the total load-out on this list costs around $3,030.00-ish U.S. dollars ($378.75 a pound-ish if you go by the base weight) if you were to purchase this stuff online (granted I didn't shop for sales or whatever, pretty much the 1st or 2nd URL on the search list). As most know already, going Ultra light is Ultra expensive! HA! Another great video Dan!!! Keep em coming and have a great hike. Looking forward to the next one!

    Late reply, but I've had the same dilemma with my trips. I have an REI coop sit pad and Alite Monarch Butterfly chair and often debate which to bring. Then I bought a folding foam pad weighing an ounce and thought I was set. But then I discovered the 12.7 ounce Hillsound BTR (better than a rock) tripod chair and will most likely take that on most trips. It takes up about the same space as the foam pad so I put it in the outside mesh pocket of my pack. It worked great and I was able to use it when I stopped. I have been combining my stops to include fewer, but longer stops to get water, eat, and take my shoes and socks off. The BTR sets up in 15 seconds. Give it a test and you may no longer debate bringing a chair. For trips with less daylight and more time around the fire, I'll probably bring the heavier Butterfly.

    Bring the chair, leave the camera. Enjoy your trip man, I'm jealous. Can't get out till next month. The good news is, I'm in for 2 months of backpacking Colorado starting next month.

    Bring the good camera and maybe try a little sit pad? You could use it to frame the pack and let us know how it feels!

    Take the chair. 👍 Do you have an action cam you could take instead of the Canon? How about a Gorillapod instead of a tripod?

    Forget the camera and chair; dump the tent since you're sleeping in a shelter (you said "shelter"); guess you don't need to add a trowel to the poop kit since the shelter includes an outhouse with a bidet 😉. So those moves pull your weight down even farther. Heck, why not dump the sleeping pad and quilt and make this a 30-mile day hike? 🤣🤣 This load-out looks great, have fun!

    Sry for 2nd question... just curious. I understand the film gear, I can't wait to see! Love the vids! But what do you do when you get to your destination? Fish? Swim? Wood carve? No homemade pizza on a fire/ bacon burgers.. with the freeze dried packs.. any hobbies add weight

    Great question! Usually by the time I get to my location, it’s pretty late so I set up camp, cook dinner, hang out by the fire and then go to bed. I’m usually pretty tired after a long hike!
