A second pillow under your side is brilliant. I might try that since I always get shoulder pain sleeping on my side camping. I have always said I'd rather carry a 21-lb pack and sleep well than a 20-lb pack and sleep badly.

These suggestions enhance any trip. Solid advice, Dan. Newbies should view this video before their first overnight hike to greatly increase their fun. Other than the specific pillow, I'm an inflatable-on-top-of-boots type, these items even stay in my day pack because they are so useful in an unexpected situation.

Awesome video!.. on of my favorites you've done! I've bought quite a bit of gear from Gossamer Gear. One good thing about the fact that they keep out of stock products on the site is that you can enter your email and get a notification when it is back in stock. They usually get stuff back in stock quickly. I tend to be more forgiving of "supply chain" issues when it comes to small cottage companies. They tend no to have the buying capacity and clout that big box stores have with suppliers. I'll wait to buy if it's something that I really want.

Great list, Dan! Another pillow option that I really like is the Trekology Aluft Deluxe Air Pillow (6 oz and ~$15 on Amazon). It’s a more traditional shape and size vs their standard ultralight air pillow that I know you also like, and has a comfortable cover on it. Like you, I bring two when I backpack and sleep very well. Having one of those and one of the Thermarest pillows might make a great combo.

I use a thermarest compressible pillow too! It's amazing for sure. Also, if you bring water purification tablets with you, make sure you check the expiration date! They also don't last as long after you popped the seal. I tried to use some a couple years later - it did not purify the water like the last time I used it and we ended up having to boil water over a fire instead. Took forever using a mess kit bowl.

Lets just just say the synthetic needed to be left in garage to be washed as they were funky. Darn Tough was pretty odorless. On top of warmth. Cooling. Wicking. The fact the dont funk up like synthetic.

I have one of those pillows. It was great for about a year, then the filling started migrating to the sides while I slept. After a couple hours my head would end up about 2” off the ground and I’d keep waking up every couple hours to fluff it up. I’ve gone to inflatable for the consistent height. +1 for the Thermarest compressible pillow. I have several inflatable pillows, have tried that old trick of using clothes as a pillow, and the Thermarest is by far the best choice. Sure it is a wee bit heavier and takes up a little more room than, say, an inflatable, but why save a few ounces if you’re recharge/sleep time is compromised by an uncomfortable or noisy pillow?

You have a doppelgänger on KZread that does bow reviews- Brandon McDonald. When I first watched your videos I thought you guys were the same and you just didn’t want to trigger anyone by talking about bows and hunting. Look him up if you want to find your twin.

Love my Darn Tough socks. 17-20$ is a lot for socks but they have a lifetime guarantee. When they get a hole mail them in and they'll send you a new pair.

The 550 is perfect for every mountain house I’ve used. I got the 650 also to nest my Soto Windmaster. Thermarest and TOAKS needs to sponsor you. I have 3 of the compressible pillows. They were on amazon for $24.99

Hiking with Epilepsy I just got the Windmaster after a lot of research and love it so far , except that the supports aren’t fixed. I got the Toaks D130 because it is shorter and lighter than the d115 900 ml. $45 on CampSaver right now. Lightest I have seen, 3.8 oz with lid.

If your looking for something new try o meals backpacking meals. I picked one up that was pizza. Pour any temperature water in pouch and insert a heating pad. The water went from cold to boiling so fast. Then just open the tin foil and enjoy.

Silicone handles are a waste anyway unless you only cook on a stove; ive managed to melt every silicone handle i own throwing pots on grills and camp fires.

It's such a shame Toaks doesn't offer premium version of their pots with silicon handles and maybe pasta draining holes. It would bring very little additional manufacturing complexity/cost and a lot more customers.
