I've only been camping once but as a kid I used to bushwhack the state land that lay beyond our pasture with my younger sister. At the time she resented begin dragged along but thanks me now for giving her an appreciation for the great outdoors. She's off hiking every chance she gets. I've always wanted to do the CDT except I would like to do it by horse . As Gus McCrea said in Lonesome Dove "There's nothing like riding a fine horse into new country" All I have to do is get the horses and mules and convince my sister to join me on this crazy expedition. So why am I watching a backpacking video? First of all you have such great food ideas and cavalry has to eat the same as the infantry. Second I like a lot of your gear picks. Much of the gear that backpackers are using are being adopted by equestrians due to its light weight and ease of transport. Now instead of needing a string of a dozen or more horses and mules to carry your stuff you can just get by on just a single pack animal or even your riding horse. Congratulations Amanda, you've brought different types of outdoor enthusiasts together on just one channel. That's more than a lot of people can claim to do on Social Media. In the end weather we're utilizing wheels, hooves or feet we all got the same need to be somewhere that isn't covered over with concrete or asphalt. There's no reason we can't all enjoy the great outdoors in our own special way.

i love backpacking because of nature and challenges. in august i did a local backpacking loop called broken top loop with my cousin, uncle, and dad. we did summit, and went about 35 miles over 22 nights. it felt so rewarding to push myself, and seeing nature and camping outside feels amazing. it had some amazing lakes, and small things you notice along the trip can make it amazing. we had pretty sunsets, a night time thunderstorm, and it was the best backpacking trip i've had.

Amanda, I believe this is the best video I've seen of yours sofar. The camera work was great and the music you used was perfect. As far as what I love about backpacking is getting a total recharge from being outside, going at my own pace down the trail less traveled and experiencing this creation called earth. We only get so many sunrises and sunsets, and I don't want to miss any of them.

What’s not to love about backpacking. The burn, the hunger, the sweat. The clarifying effect of walking on my thoughts and mood cannot be beat! It’s not just endorphins. It’s nature, oxygen and removal from ‘modern society’ and it’s complexities. I could and have lived out of my backpack, damn - so that’s why the suburban scene feels so damn heavy! A weekend haul absolutely energises me for the working week.. which in turn pays for hiking goodies

Great question! Lately I find hiking very grounding- I can hear birds singing, feel rocks in my shoes, smell the trees, and name the different types of trees I see. Time slows down for me and I can take a break from my thoughts or let them flow. Going for a walk is simple to do and you don't need any "stuff". Taking time during the day makes all the difference!

Yes! I love how "in the present moment" I become. Simple things like the way light hits the trees truly amazes me. It's just so beautiful. Even on the days that I'm working on my computer, I still try to take a walk around the block during the day just to reset. Thanks for watching!

I have been on a canoe trip, which is similar in a way, but instead of walking you paddle most of the way and can have heavier bigger packs because you don’t need to carry them as long. I love canoe trips because I just get to escape from the world and just live. I don’t need to think about politics, there is no news coming in we are so far out of service. I am only 13 years old, but when I’m canoeing in nature, I feel connected to Mother Earth, and like you, I too get a surge of energy after a few days in the wilderness. I watch these kind of videos because I was supposed to go to the boundary waters in Minnesota for 12 days with a camp, but it was cancelled due to Covid-19. I still got to go but for only 5 days and with my dad and my friend and my friends dad. Thank you for the video, I need to get back to the wildnerness to recharge.

My wife and I love backpacking for.....everything. The places we experience first and foremost. But even 'the suck' as we call it when you're miles from where you need to be gives a great sense of accomplishment once it's all done. I also like the photography and videography and even video editing. Let's me relive the trip. That trail was beautiful, by the way. Nothing like I've ever seen in Utah. So green! Looks awesome.

Thank you for the wonderful video. The allure of the back country has always been the same for me, never wavering or faltering regardless of my mindset...or of obstacles, dangers, stresses or pressures. Experiencing life in it's simplicity, yet in such grandeur and beauty actually humbles me just enough to find access to the grace I need to be a better person. For me, there is treasure beyond value when the struggles of the trail, the technical planning, the aches and pains suddenly fade and the true beauty of the moment arrives like a drawn curtain. It happens for me on every adventure...I can also see it in your videos which is rare and unexpected.

I don't know if I can articulate everything I love about backpacking... I love the sense of adventure. The simplicity (especially compared to my normal work/home sometimes frantic life). I love the inimate connection with the earth and the scenery. I love the independence of it. I find myself getting gitty watching backbacking videos on youtube, or even geeking out over lighter or better gear. I like the nervous feeling I get the night before a long trip. I love to disconnect from my electronic life. (I'm a computer programmer...also live in Utah) I love the moments where I can be with friends and my fam without any pretense or distraction. I like the quiet moments and letting my thoughts carry where they will as I hike on. Those are a few of my thoughts on why I love to backpack. I admit I have often dreamed about doing one of the major thru hikes (PCT, CDT, AT), but I don't know how I could leave my life and especially work for 4-6 months. Who knows. Maybe I'll settle for doing the John Muir Trail section hike at some point. Great channel, amazing production. More backpacking vids are my request. :)

Amanda, love the channel and heavily rely on your sage advice, thank you! What you're recommendation for water carrying on a 2-day backpack? Our last water source will be in the morning after breakfast; we hike 11 miles to our evening campsite, then we won't be near a water source again until 4pm the following afternoon (so say 30 hours without a water source). Morning coffee is a must and we'll be using backpacking food, which should be our only two water usages outside of hydration. What's a good target amount to carry, and what's the best method? (I have a 3L bladder, separate 1l and 2l bladders, and 32oz Nalgeeen type bottles). Thanks in advance!

What I like about hiking. Hmm. I am in remission from leukemia for 4 1/2 years now. I started hiking as a form of exercise. Now, I hike many miles for the peace of mind it gives me. Every hike is different (even on the same trail) i often reflect on where I was before. During my fight, I spent at least a year of that in the hospital. Now, 20 mile hikes are part of my hiking plan. By the way, I love your channel. Keep up the good work!

I've only gone once backpacking as a high school trip during the start of the fall year and I absolutely loved it! I usually love doing stuff like that because for me it is energizing as well and just makes you feel like a whole new person. I love having Type 2 Fun experiences. It seems silly, but I have started to plan trips that I know are going to hit that level because the best memories and stories come from those experiences. And being a huge introvert, it’s the one activity that I truly felt like myself.

Hello Amanda, thank you for sharing this beautifully filmed video. You do a great job of capturing the beauty of Mother nature. Take care, be safe and stay healthy. I appreciate backpacking because you are one on one with nature. You can experience, firsthand, whatever Mother nature throws at you. Also, you can see the beauty and intricate nature of God's creation. 🤗

Just subscribed to your channel! I have been day hiking regularly for the last 3 years, but have not yet taken the plunge on backpacking. For me, it's being disconnected and really leaning into time for leisure and self reflection. I am starting with an overnight backpacking trip next month and I'm super excited. I just want to be as prepared as possible, and watching your videos have really helped me in my process. Much love and appreciation for your content, it's absolutely delightful!

Beautiful backpacking trail! Is this Montana? Seeing amazing places like that in their purest form is one of the many amazing reasons to love backpacking. 😍 I’d also have to say I love it because I generally don’t have a cell signal while on the trail, which allows me to truly disconnect and be present in the moment. Happy trails!

Excelent video! The cinematography and storytelling were great. The milage up and down those hills was impressive. My favorite part about backpacking is arriving at a remote, beautifull place in the wilderness and getting to spend the night there in comfort. This experience is made all the better because your own efforts to get there with everything you need. Keep up the good video work.

Why I backpack. I started over 40 years ago, solo hiking from age 16. I seem happiest in the backcountry, while seeing and experiencing things a lot of people never get to do. There’s nothing like cowboy camping alone, with the wind in the trees and the stars shining overhead. Like you, I sometimes need to recharge and backpacking does this for me. All of my hiking has been in the east, in Maine, the White Mountains, Vermont, the Adirondacks, and the Great Smokies. Your videos make me want to visit Utah. Where was the hike shown in this video?

  • @amanda.outside

    @amanda.outside

Thank you for sharing! I grew up on the east coast and spent a lot of time in Connecticut, Vermont, and upstate NY. Utah is such a different place compared to where I grew up! The trail in the video is the Stansbury Front trail. Utah is unique because we have both lush green mountains and beautiful red rock in the desert. Definitely worth a visit someday!

This was a nice adventure. I like the drone footage. I like backpacking because you have to work for your reward. Meaning that you hike to get to the point where you get to relax. That probably didn’t make sense. Take Care and Keep Exploring The Outdoors.

.Wow Amanda!!,.. Great time out ,, Beautiful location ... Always enjoy your videos ... showing the beauty of natural life all around us ... time with nature and your thoughts .. or goofing of with children and friends ... unwinding the stresses of daily life .... should be required to take time outdoors every week ,, doesn't have to be a cross country excursion ,, a few miles out from a major city , hang a left/right , find a trail to a tree ,, go to that tree ,, turn around and return home and reminisce your time out in fresh air ,, your body talking to you for the exercise and the new and different things you discovered ,,had seen and smelled ... next time talk to friends ,, go to outdoor store ask of interesting trails and locations within your next distance .... rinse and repeat increasing time and challenges , new necessary gear for safety and comfort ,,,,,include needed trail gear then cook kit ,, then quality tent and sleep system and continue the personal interests and challenges including friends and family members .... share the crazy ...
