@@ronmurray7349Really? I always heard the Expos never had good attendance, even before 1994. Many have said the overall French feel of Montreal and their lack of appreciation for baseball was a factor. Especially with the language barriers etc. Not to mention the team was never a serious contender, before 1994 they only made the playoffs once in 1981 and that was funny enough a strike shortened season.

DC lost a team twice. The Twins were the original Washington Senators. They are an original AL franchise. They were in Washington, DC from 1901 to 1961 before moving to Minnesota. They played at Griffith Stadium as well. Washington immediately got an expansion team when the Senators moved to Minnesota in 1961. That team played at Griffith for a single year then RFK. They moved when no one was willing to meet the price to buy them. KC is worthy of this list as well since the Athletics were there from 1955-67 after moving from Philly. Took a year before the Royals came in as an expansion team. Of the original AL teams, only 4 have stayed the whole time in their cities: Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers, and Chicago White Sox. The Yankees were originally the Baltimore Orioles (though MLB has played with history to try to hide this). The Baltimore Orioles of today were originally the St. Louis Browns until 1953. The Twins were the original Washington Senators. The Athletics were originally in Philly before moving to KC then to Oakland then to Sacramento. The AL Central has four of the original eight AL teams in it: Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, and Minnesota.

Sometimes it does though. When the Orioles moved to Camden Yards, it rejuvenated the fanbase. It briefly happened when the Pirates moved to PNC Park. Stadiums only draw fans for 1-2 seasons.. after that, you need to put a quality team on the field to draw fans... The expos biggest issue is the owner didn't want to be there, much like that fisher guy in Oakland.. The only team I can see that would get helped by relocation is the Rays.. they can't draw even when they win. Also, The senators left DC not once.. but twice.. the original is now called the twins.. the second iteration only stayed for a few years and became Texas. The problem with relocation is the same as always.. 1. you're going to alienate your current fanbase... Fisher has done a good job there.. 2 You need to build a new fan base in the new city.. not always easy.. even moreso today because you don't have to have a local team to have a favorite thanks to broadcasting.. even worse because how you treated your old fan base, the new ones will tread lightly as to not get burned. So many teams claim that a new stadium will fix all of the teams issues.. then you get the Miami situation.. oh they packed the house for 1+ years... then Miami did another firesale and went right back to doing what they always did... and people wonder why the expos failed (I seem to remember the expos ownership ended up owning Miami when the dust settled.. with Miami ownership moving to Boston and the Nats became ownerless... ) Stadiums DON'T DRAW FANS... GOOD TEAMS DRAW FANS... and high ticket prices will scare them away too... which is MLB's other issue.

And it's not a market that's been abandoned any more than Brooklyn was a market that MLB abandoned. The San Francisco Bay Area still has a team. And the younger generation is showing little interest in baseball than the older ones like myself who still remember going to Jarry Park on a a Sunday and watching the Expos play. Available downtown properties have already been purchased for other projects which means a need for a Plan B to where to build a new stadium.

The Oakland stadium problem is pavement, nothing but pavement. I get that you have to have parking, but that pavement is just ugly and hot. They COULD have saved the stadium, but it wouldn’t be cost effective: tear down Mt Davis, completely clearing out centerfield, then work in the bars, etc, and add an awning over the the remaining semi-circular seats, revamp the well-known crappy clubhouse, and pressure wash the hell outta the place.

Absolutely. Montreal is warmer than Minneapolis in April and October. It's also warmer than Toronto in April and May (lake Ontario keeps the city much cooler than the areas inland and away, 20-30 f cooler at times). Montreal would work now, BELL MEDIA needs content and they want to challenge ROGERS MEDIA Sportsnet for the top media and sports giant. The Expos would be a much better draw than the Rays. With each team within a 5-7 hour drive, fans could watch their heroes play in Montreal. Out of all the other cities mentioned maybe Nashville is a touristy place but Montreal is or was a world class city with so much to do or see. It has the infrastructure, it has world class transit. 3 cities are able to get over a million people on its subways daily, just subways, NYC, Toronto and Montreal. I laugh when I see the people in the Tampa Bay area complain about traffic. Their traffic is nothing compared to real cities like Boston, NYC, Toronto, and yes Montreal. They'd draw on average better than the Rays. The fucking Rays have been very good to excellent for the better part of 17 years. Yes it's a shitty park but no rainouts! I'm Montreal born and raised and while I no longer live there I have a soft spot for my Expos. Sadly I see Nashville and probably Charlotte or Austin getting an expansion team. The Expos were fucked out of their shot in 1994. The strike hurt but the cheapskate owners could have kept the club going in 1995. Larry Walker was gone but the core could have kept together for a few years. I say this alot, maybe too much but Charles Bronfman abandoned abandoned his city. He bitched about how much he was playing Gary Carter so he traded him away. He helped the Mets win in 1986. Bronfman complained about the politics in Quebec, but honestly he had enough $ to lose $ on a set of books only to make $ on the real books, lol. He sold the team to people who had no business owning a team Finally the Blue Jays, they were way down below the Expos in terms of popularity up until the early to mid 80's. They got MLB and the TV networks to force the Expos not to be broadcasted nation wide like the Jays. The Expos went from being Canada's team to a local market & less relevant anywhere west of Ottawa. Not a young man anymore, I cried louder and felt worse when my Expos played their last game in the Big Owe. When my dad died I wasn't as emotional. And even by then I gave up on the Expos, I gave up in 1998 when they traded away Pedro. I hope one day that kids in Montreal get a chance to embrace, feel, suffer and celebrate baseball, the best and only sport in my ❤️

As an Expos fan, I really don't care where they play, as long as they have a good team. When they destroyed the best team in baseball in 3 days in 1995, that turned me off as a fan, as it did for a lot of people. They do need a new stadium, but an outdoor one, with real grass, would be so much nicer than a domed stadium. It works in Minneapolis, which is about the same latitude as Montreal, so it could work there too. Even if it's a little cold at the beginning of the season, people can wear jackets there. Then, they would have a great stadium for the summer and the fall. Attendance was never an issue when they had good teams, which should have been all the time with the way the Expos system developed their players. It would have been amazing to have Larry Walker and Vlad Guerrero on the same team, along with Jose Vidro and the stars of the 1994 team, like Marquis Grissom, Moises Alou, John Wettland and Pedro Martinez. If MLB wants to expand their fan base to Europe, Montreal, as a French city, would be the perfect place to start. I'm guessing that people in French speaking countries would cheer for them.

You argued that Brooklyn isn't a city. I just mentioned Tampa Bay(which was in the article) isn't a city either. It's about areas losing a team. As a Cleveland fan, I understand their pain. Brooklyn has a basketball team, but never got another baseball team.

@@johnschellhouse1360 Right I mentioned the Borough of Brooklyn which is a part of New York City and the Dodgers played there. Another baseball team named the Metropolitans eventually came along. So what major league baseball team did the city of Tampa lose? That was the topic if you watched the video.

@@timphares3061 On the contrary, here’s what I found from the Montreal Gazette : It’s an issue that is tender and sensitive for Montreal baseball fans, and an economics professor at Concordia University isn’t holding back. Moshe Lander firmly believes there will be no return of baseball to Montreal to replace the Expos. “They’re not going to get a team. It’s not going to happen,” Lander said in a phone interview. “I don’t think baseball is an attraction like it was in the 1960s when they got a franchise.” “Now Toronto, to some extent, runs Canada, and Toronto would not want Montreal to infringe on their rights.” Lander apologized for being the “purveyor of bad news” for anyone looking to get a team back, but said he was just being honest. A new stadium downtown would run into the “billion-dollar-plus range, and the idea of public taxpayer money to finance such a stadium” would not be accepted, he said. And further added : “That idea doesn’t go down with taxpayers. There would be instantaneous pushback. Income inequality is so pronounced.”
