3 CHEAP Off Grid Water Systems

Ойын-сауық

We've been using these 3 cheap off grid water systems for years on our homestead: Ram pump, rain water with first flush diverter, and simple pond catchment. Water wells are very expensive, and they aren't a guarantee of quantity or quality of water either. These methods are easy, cheap and can work in most climates.

On the first flush...instead of a tee at the top that allows water into your catch, use an elbow down into the straight end of a wye. going down from there into the catch tank. The angled side of the wye is pointed up and connected on to your storage tank line. Dirt that comes into the system after the catch is full, will fall straight down and wont bypass the catch system because it will have to flow up stream through the wye to storage. With a tee setup like you have, once the catch is full, you have basically a straight shot to storage, and any late coming dirt will just swoosh by the catch tank. Also, small floating bits will be caught at the top of the water column of water, as it is higher than the wye. They will sit there until the catch tank is emptied, or they get water logged and sink.

Jeff provides an extraordinary practical engineering education for his young ladies; good as college labs if not better. Girls are very talented and great students. ⭐⭐⭐ The 6 foot or 7 foot head on the ram pump, I say Jeff's a good engineer incorporated a safety factor for pond level and friction losses from bends and fittings. Darn! so wish I could sign up for the summer camp event; certain those attending will have an awesome adventure.

73 your a spring chicken my goodness my grandpa was carrying 2x8x16 down a fairly steep hill for some of our dock build here at Weiss lake alabama near the little river canyon- desoto falls isn’t but 45- minutes to an hour away - cloud land canyon1 hour Chattanooga 1hour 15 minutes love it here we built a lake house that will be around for our grea great grea grandchildrens children some of the wall are 4 foot thick tucked into top of a hill with gorgeous view 15 minute canoe ride to a waterfall. Starting a worm castings 1 bag living soil grow kits for lazy folks😁 and just finished our maiden voyage of trying to make it ourselves if your not familiar with it you should be as I should have been a while back but better late than never when done right can slow release organic fertilizers into garden compost wherever and what ever you grow up to a thousand years yes a thousand it is truly right up our alley with worm castings and mulch piles that need to be bigger. Love your show awesome roof set up I get most of it. Trying to get my mom to look into solar I think it’s definitely worth it especially if you look for deals and install yourself my dad was an architect- home builder - remodeling- plumbing - electrical- roofing- smaller masonry- so when I was younger neighbor hood kids played every weekend and I learned skills that I had no interest in knowing at that time ahh to be young and self centered lmao🙏love your channel where do y’all homestead? I’ll extend a change of scenery vacation to you and yours but I warn you moms an old hippie so if you here good music just smile shake and get your groove on j/k no actually 🤟😁👍👍😎🙏

Dad you are taking heat out of the air using less energy than creating heat. So electric heat is 100% Efficient and this is 160% average this month!!! The girls will eventually have kids and learn how much fun it is to learn and teach your kids this stuff.

I put a first-flush column on each roof drain leader OUTSIDE. Then, when it needs clearing (seasonally -ish) all the yucky water goes onto the ground OUTSIDE. I pump (by gravity) all pre-screaned water to 6 IBC totes (painted black for algae control) and my swimming pool and so on, adding up to about 2,200 gallons. I live alone and have a seperate collection system for my ladies (cows). I made my own "Berky"-style filter and I drink and cook with it. I wash in filtered water - as clean as it is BEFORE going through my drinking water filter.

Wells are all about how deep you have to go. The problem is you never know how deep you have to go until you actually drill a well, in which case you drill until you hit water or run out of money, lol. Well drillers can provide you with some estimates in the area if they've drilled around there, but even then that's no guarantee. Another option people can consider is building a rain roof, except the "roof" is just off the ground, there's no type of building involved. Build the back end higher than the front end, hook up some gutters and as long as you have elevation, you can gravity feed it into tanks. Most expensive part would be the metal roof material, but if you're in an area with a lot of rain you can get a lot of water off of a little rain.

That pond , if an avg 10 ft deep, holds 299,200 gallons when full. For water tanks, look at IBC Totes. If you can find some that held food grade contents, you can get them for anywhere between free to about $125. They're 275-330 gallons, if memory serves. WAY less expensive.

We live in Western Australia, and as many others we have rain water only. It never rains in the summer so we live of our big rain water tank all year round. No filtration or any other complications, nobody has ever been sick. Strainers to remove it bits and leaves. Beautiful water. Best regards, Annie

Unfortunately I live in flat country. I have used the first bonus system to catch rain water from the house roof to use for washing my truck because my wife didn't like me using softened water from the house. The pressure washer had enough suction and the head in the tank was enough to get the job done and the water was already soft.

Do you ever dope your storage to disinfect your water and kill any little nasties ?? I use hydrogen peroxide annually in my RV tank. Only takes a day or two for any taint to disappear and is non toxic as the hydrogen peroxide breaks down into hydrogen, oxygen and water. Chap to buy in bulk. Keep the videos and smiles coming.

Also can you catch water in freezing weather on your house roof I have thought about putting a tank on my roof and let it gravity feed my house in when we lose power I have a well. The coldest it gets here in the mountains of southwest Virginia is about 5 below zero fahrenheit. Your family is always welcome here I really enjoy your videos

I am not cognizant of the requirements of a small hydroelectric system in terms of how many feet of head pressure would be required to operate a small system. Do you know if it would be feasible to put in a small hydroelectric generator at the bottom of your run from the pond in series with the rest of your system of the ram pump and get both water and electricity out of the system?
