Shooting wide open aperture when you don't need it (99% of the time) close up portrait with f1.8 makes it really hard to nail a sharp image with the focus on point. Using F2.8 oder F4 in short distances won't change the depth of field dramatically, but makes it a lot easier to get the focus right without losing a blurred background.

New subscriber here, Loving your videos so far. Hope to see you do more videos like this, tutorials or maybe behind the scenes of your photo shoots. Oh and the biggest mistake I did, (I'm still an amateur) is to not focus on education and instead got so hooked on gear. GAS as they call it. So that's why I am focusing more on learning, scouring what KZread has to offer and that is how I ended up here :) And I am glad I did. All the best to you and your channel. Cheers!
The one I commit more often is definitely the directing one. I get so caught up in the shoot to find the coolest angle, space etc, that I often spend a few minutes without talking to the talent haha

It's so hard to remember everything! But even if you can pay attention to what ISN'T working, changing those little things will help too. :)
This is fantastic advice! I used to do these when I got into photography a year ago, and now as a more experienced photographer, I think this advice is still fantastic to hear!
Love your channel Lizzie - these are really good tips. I definitely needed to learn about posing my model a lot better - big lesson. Keep up the great work! :)
Thank you so much. Very good tips.
Great video. Thank you for the advice. I'm all about lighting, yet your tips totally help.

These are really good tips. Thanks for sharing!
You are getting me into the habit of liking a video on KZread. Love you and all of your videos !!!
Fantastic tips :) and with great pictures as examples.
Good video, Thats one of the reasons I'm very happy I went into studying photography as fast as I could age wise. Because when I did do mistakes I would be told straight away. I'm also very lucky with the teachers and uni I went too. We always make mistakes, but it's a good way to learn
Really liked that shot with the pillars!
Girl you are so gorgeous. Thanks for these tips, always looking to improve my photography :)
So glad I found this channel, Canada has some awesome youtubers!!
Such great tips!!
Thank you so much lizzie.. :* It helps me a lot..

@lizziepeirce i really liked your use of the spaces. my thoughts on the picture that you tried to take shooting up at the ceiling would be to use a 200mm to 400mm lens and blur out the background. i think it would be really cool to such a large amount of negative space but to have it blurred out from using the super wide lens. just my thoughts.
Hey Lizzie Thanks for sharing this video!! Really helpful. When I started learning photography I wasn't using the Manual Mode, what a mistake! lol! Thanks again!

haha love the sneaky change in the colour grade at like 1:10 The more gold/yellow colour grades that you do look awesome as opposed to the colder look in the beginning
Just gotta mention how beautiful the color grading is in this video.
Great video Lizzie! I totally remember making the space mistake a lot when I first started, but I've been working on it and the surroundings and scenery really make a difference in a lot of my newest photos! Loved watching your tips! With much love and support from California, keep it up!

Its actually getting "cold" finally...! Our winter was very warm all the way through Christmas, which is crazy! And thank you! I love watching all of you guys! Chris and Peter obviously I've been watching for a while, but you and Lucy offer great content and I'm really enjoying it!

Lizzie Peirce Oh yes I’m very sure our definitions of “cold” are entirely different! But it’s nice for us for a change! If you could believe it I’m tired of always being so hot. But 40-50°F with the sun out feels nice! Needing nothing but a light jacket! I love it! Back to you all in Canada! Yes! I’m so excited for you! To me, beginnings are always so exhilarating and feeling that rush of creating and loving what you’re doing, ah it’s the best!
Really helpful!! Thanks

Great video! Thanks for the advice! I don't usually do portraits but I recent revisited some pictures I took of my friends in Washington DC and I think I under estimated them. I did some of the things you mentioned in the video without even realizing👍🏻 other pictures not so much😕 but the edits came out really well and after seeing this video I now know what to work on and now I really wanna find a friend and shoot portraits😂

Depends on the photo for sure! But I find most of the time it's an issue with your shutter speed. Of course things like your lens/camera, your iso and aperture matter too - but making sure your shutter isn't too low can make a huge difference. Hope that helps?

DIRECTING IS KINDA TUFF
What do you actually mean by “negative space”?
@plattinummedia
5 жыл бұрын
"Negative space, in art, is the space around and between the subject of an image. Negative space may be most evident when the space around a subject, not the subject itself, forms an interesting or artistically relevant shape, and such space occasionally is used to artistic effect as the "real" subject of an image."
@johansmolinski

Ah ok, cool. Guess that’s what I used to call background/foreground. From now on, I’ll call it negative space, cause it sounds more... scientific? :)

Yessir! @LizziePeirce. I don't post too much right now but I will!
My biggest mistake when starting out was rushing. Although I took my time when shooting I wish I would have taken longer to make sure that everything was flowing correctly. You know, analyzing light, speaking more to the model, working harder to create something more organic and different, etc. I believe it's all about preparation and not rushing the process. (IG) KONCRETE_KINGDOM
I really wish you would not move your hands around so much . But your cool
4th Mistake - Not living in "Torano"
you're so cool and nice. I like you.
