Wow. Leaf filter is the worst.

Really enjoyed both of the videos you did on gutter guards. It really shows "buyer beware - buyer be informed". I tried several DIY gutter covers, and none of them kept the fine materials out. My wife and I attended a home show and saw a demo of LeafFilter. We were fooled by their smooth demo. I am sad to say I spent about $5,000 to have them installed on our house. We had a contract where they would rehang my 6" aluminum gutters, slope them correctly to the downspouts, and install their product. They did not do what they were contracted to do, and actually cut the "raised edge" off the back of the cover. Didn't find out till after they left as I was out of town on business during the install. They asked the wife is it looked good and she said yes - but she didn't get up on the roof to take a look. We called them back several times and never got any resolution - they kept sending out the same 2 guys (who didn't seem to know what they were supposed to be doing). Gave up on LeafFilter vowing to tell everyone I knew not to buy from them like I did. What can I say, a sucker is born every day and they got me good. I like the Micro Mesh you demo'ed, and the LeafFilter would probably work fine if installed correctly. My next door neighbor had the LeafGuard system installed 2 years ago, and he has not had any problems - his roof pitch is 7/12, and mine is 6/12. Was thinking about going with LeafGuard but after seeing your recommendations, I could get new gutters & Micro Mesh for about the same cost. I believe this would work better for me. This guy is SO easy to listen to and very knowledgeable. I hope he keeps putting out great videos like this. I'm so glad I found his content. I recommend anyone who is into diy and gutters subscribe to his content. It's a great reference and he provides a TON of great insight based on years of experience and thousands of different product installs.

Just had the Leaf Filter guy come out to quote today. He started at $21,000 for 530 feet! He dropped his price to $13,000 before he left. Later he called back and said he could do the job for $7,000. I'm so glad that I've seen your videos so I knew how to negotiate.

Need to add an update. After confirming with the sales guy that the downspouts and complete underground drainage system would be cleaned on the day of the install the install guys said that they don’t do that. They also said that the sales guys lie all the time to get business. The installers did a decent job. I got a 100 ft extension and special head for my pressure washer and just finished working all day to try to clear the drains. Cleaned one and have four still clogged! Ugh!

LeafFilter- just had that installed here in Vancouver, Canada: he is bang on when he says they are charging way too much. Promise to remove & reposition gutters in order for the filters to be positioned at an angle but alas, such was not the case - product sits fairly flat. I watched one guy talking about how much per linear foot you should pay for these guards to be installed & he indicated from 15$ to $20. A lot of money for two guys to do a minimum of work for 6 hrs. Be cautious when you hire them & keep an eye on them as they work.

Do the math. $15.00 to $20.00X 200/LF (guess at length of gutters) = $3,000.00 to $4,000.00. You could probably hire someone to clean your gutters for around $150.00. So you could have your gutters professionally cleaned for 20 to 30 years for the cost of LeafFilter. I'd opt to hire someone to clean my gutters.

Great explanation!! I so appreciate the tech info. I used one of the white plastic shields on a previous house. It actually did pretty well, though a wind storm did dame a few pieces. Ah well, it was Texas. The killer now is that I have a severe drop in the back yard, so I need a very tall ladder to do this. Or, get a contractor. Thanks again. Dan

I have a system for gutter covers that is absolutely the only cover I install, for many logical reasons. I've been a gutter guy for 27 years, in business 16 years. The best way I've found to provide the best was to invest alot of time, money and get the Tooling Van Mark makes available to gutter guys, so I built my 20' enclosed trailer, to allow for brake and stand, gutter machine, trim a gutter , slitter, All van Mark tools, can take 5" gutter coil and make 100's of feet in a few hours. Creating the perfect cover. Oh and it works great, very rarely do I have to go back. Although valley areas and steep roofs do not always work out. I have alot to add to conversation about covers.

I have those valley dams mounted on gutters and with our trees they are always garbage pits. Nice idea on removing and putting in that extended micro mesh fittings.

Good info and I appreciate the insightful reviews, but, I have had micromesh on my gutters for about 5+ years and the mesh is plugged with the same black mold that I have on the roof. In heavy rains, the mesh is too fine and water sheds of the gutters anyway. Even if I blow the mesh off annually, cleaning the mesh would require either removal (a real pain) or in place chemical or mechanical cleaning. Bottom line, I am pulling mine off. Recognize that these micro mesh guards are not maintenance free and will require frequent cleaning. A more valid test would be to check on the mesh pluggage after a year or two of use.

The micro mesh guards are the new technology and they have a serious flaw for those who live in áreas that get snow and ice. When it snows the mesh holds the snow causing the bottom layer to freeze over night. When the sun begins to melt the top layers water spills out of the gutter guard onto your driveway or walkway. When temperatures drop again the water freezes creating a dangerous layer of ice on the ground. On the other hand the kids will probably love the new ice skating rink...

That was a great to the point explanation on gutter protraction. Our house has the dreaded bad 4 reasons that screens won’t work, even with a modified clipped gable in 3 spots otherwise simple medium 22 square shingle roof. #1. We have the 1980 120 foot tree in the front yard that produces the smallest oblong leaf I have ever seen. #2 We have 12 ponderosa trees at 90 feet tall on the sides and the back. They produce the 6-7” long needles in clusters of three. #3 We live in the central upper Midwest and enjoy 4 seasons. Even with thru roof damp vents (Kitchen, Bathrooms that are insulated) and R64 in the attic. A 4” rise in 12” is not intimidating but still, weather conditions create Ice dams. We have no internal leaks because we have 3 rows of ice and water shield under architectural asphalt shingles are the heavy 25-30 year type. #4 We are both unable to work so money is tight. So the guy who comes to the door is wasting his/her time. Sorry, I hate these package parts/labor deals. They offer 50% off labor but wait a year, with no current offers during the busy season, same price. What? 50% off of 150% Mark-up = same price. Oh, you won’t get a warranty if you do them yourself. Who cares. Here is the color & length, get the hardware and caps, and I will do the front this year only, myself. I climbed micro-wave and TV towers to 1,980 feet and heights don’t bother me. Well, the next owner won’t get warranty, who cares. My son gets the house and I am not leaving unless feet first. Nice video! ASE Master Tech since 1978 - Retired

I use the Gutterglove stainless steel micro mesh guards. Cost about $12 per 4’ piece. They’re awesome!

There is a guy that has videos on installing french drains. He recommends to prevent clogged gutters oversize the downspouts. The theory is the faster you move the water the less debris can collect.

I agree. As a Master Home Imorovement specialist, I have instaled and worked with or worked for some of these top companies before I started MHIC. The Miters are inded agame changer. The Pro series is Premo if you have tree canopies moreover it is a shinge mount. At 12% pitch under your single It will out preform anything mounted flat. Think about it - it used gavity. I have Guard Guard on a house with a steep roof. It works very well and I have not had to clean out my gutters at all since I had it installed years ago. I also have LeafGuard on a smaller house next to the one that I have Gutter Guard on. It does not work as well because leaves and debris build up on it.

We use Gutter Clean. They have inside and outside corners. But I always recommend not using anything. Just clean them.

I have searched for the best gutter cover and thought I had the best when I purchased a aluminum extrusion backed micro mesh cover a number of years ago . . My primary challenge was to prevent tulip maple seeds which are about 30% of the size of a maple tree seed from getting in my gutters . I have numerous oak trees on the property but preventing leafs from them getting into the gutter is easy. My experience with the micro mesh has been mixed. I have a mansard house with a flat roof which in many places concentrates the runoff depending on the water flow and the variations of the roofs surface resulting in water overrunning the gutters in moderate to heavy rains . Where the water was running over the gutter the supplier replaced the micro mesh with a mesh that was larger at 50-60 thousandths square . This solved the problem except in a torrential storm . In the winter the metal micro mesh would often freeze over as water melted off the roof and ran off the roof . I had icicles several feet long hanging from the gutters . To offset this problem I installed heating cable on top of the mesh secured by hand made aluminum clips and purchased a automatic controller to control the on/off for the heat cable. The heating wire does catch debris and I must clean the top of the micro mesh in the fall . Also, after 6+years on the North side of my house the micro mesh is accumulating mold which plugs the micro mesh . In the fall I use a stainless steel brush and scrub the surface of the micro mesh to open it up to accept water . Getting gutter covers to work in all situations is very difficult as I have found out . My gutter covers are still in place after 8-9 years but require annual maintenance but do prevent debris from getting into the gutter . Life is made of compromises !

You captured the problem my customer has with her mesh gutter system. She pays me to brush off her mesh which has been clogged. They work again for about one year and then we do it again.

Using a copper mesh might prevent mold as well as moss.

Thank you for the review. Your correct with Leaf Filter sales gimmick. They come in with a high price and now a Covid price significantly lower. At this point I lost interset and ask the sales guy to leave. Left a bad impression of the company.

You also need to consider if have a Shingle or Metal roof. Makes a huge difference. Mainly installation. Leaf guard covers that you see on TV suck with metal roofs. Water comes off roof so fast, and with so much volume that it flows over like a water fall.

As a professional contractor in Connecticut i think Leaf Solution is a awesome product at a affordable price.

I have tried several different gutter guards many of which you gave examples, Leaf Solutions appears to be my best bet. My neighbor used Leafguard but they are way to pricey for what you get.

My gutter guy is the ideal gutter guy. Very professional and very informed. I loved micro mesh up until a few months ago when he told me that when pollen gets on them and water hits them, it turns into a clay that clogs up the micro mesh. He said it takes 1-3 years, but i haven’t personally seen it myself. Maybe I’ll go inspect the homes I installed it on years back and see how they’re doing.

Home Depot product has worked for me.... I only have Silver Maple seeds that stick up there for a bit but squirrels take care of them...

I wholeheartedly agree with your comments about LeafFilter pricing and sales tactics. My wife called for an appointment and had the salesman stop by yesterday. He gave a very thorough sales presentation and the product seemed to be of good quality and what I would prefer. My issue was the sales tactics. I felt like I was at some sleazy used car dealership (I know not all are sleazy). We were quoted an extremely high price and it dropped each time we said no until we got to something reasonable. I can't do business with a company that employs these tactics. Please just give me your best price. I want a fair deal and want you to get a fair deal. I don't want you to give anything away but I don't want you to steal from me either. Prices were as follows $4094- good for a year, $3480- good for today, $2480 if I signed immediately, $2480 if my install dates were flexible (a filler job when some other job cancelled on the day of installation) and finally a rock bottom price of $1335. I felt like even $1500 would fair but had to say no just because I felt they were trying to gouge me from the start.

I have the inside corner with the splash guard and it's terrible about filling up with leaves and debris and then overflows and comes into the basement. I think I'll put some micro mesh there and take out the splash guards.

I agree with you about Leaf Filter, I had one of these sales guys come to my house and give me a big presentation. He would not give me a price till the end. When he finally told me the price, I was floored! He came down to to half of that that and I still said no way. I had to h Kick him out of my house. They are the biggest rip offs.

Never use leaf guards that are designed to insert under your starter course of shingles. That can create some damage and future water seepage under the water proof membrane under your shingles and the edge of the sheathing and fascia boards will begin rotting. Also, in Florida, building codes require the starter course of shingles to be glued down to the aluminum drip edge with roof cement. The bead of roof cement is applied 4 inches wide so the cement covers the drip edge and runs onto the underneath membrane which is usually a peel-n-stick designed product. Never attempt to pry up that starter course of shingles to slide leaf guards under the shingles which would cause major damage to the shingles.

A relative has the Leaf Guard. It is at least 10 years old, likely more. The gutters sagged and the birds and the bees have found it a most suitable place for a home. I will either install the micro-mess myself, or find a reputable gutter company. Thanks. I give your link a try.

Great Video, whats your view on the under shingle vs the facia mount.?

thank you so much for your video and i will be checking back as i may try to deal with the other half of my roof ( previous owner re shingled only the side facing the street ). i have a question. the gutter on the front of the house spans 38 feet with two down spouts at each end. somewhere else i heard i should pitch the gutter 1/2 for every 10 feet towards the downspout... can i really do this with my situation when it is one piece? in other words, would i attach it higher in the center and progressively attach it lower accordingly towards both sides? thank you

I've been installing gutters and siding for 3 years. And when it comes to gutter guards I would recommend a mesh product for homes that either have a couple trees or the roof is not to steep. If you, the home owner have a ridiculous amount of trees, get them trimmed or cut, and if you're roof is to steep, just hire someone to clean them out, and go with option 1 of this video

As a gutter cleaner, I agree the mesh product is very good, but with trees and steep pitched roofs, it also is not perfect. I have a customer whose neighbor has some fairly leafy trees and pine trees that are not in harmony with her mesh gutter guards. Secondly, the mesh is now clogged with dirt and debris such that on a heavy rainfall the water just runs over the top. Terrible, not just a little.

As a contractor I have replaced 5 house loads of gutter because of the mesh. the material that settles on the mesh breaks down and forms a fine silt in the gutter. The fine silt builds up to the point where the gutter capacity is greatly reduced and eventually the gutter rots out. The mesh should also be placed away from internal gutter corners as the water rushes down the valley and straight over the gutter mesh onto the ground.

A customer of mine has this issue as well. The fine mesh has become one clogged mat. The water now runs over the screen mesh instead of going down into the gutter. Not all places, but in valley areas and areas where a pine tree and oak tree pelt her roof.

What is considered too steep? Mine is 8:12, and I wonder if the micro mesh products would be effective. Thanks.

This is a really helpful video. A couple of questions On the micro mesh, how does it work with standing seam metal roofs? With most of the systems that attach to the facia, how do you remove it easily to clean the gutter when its needed?

I hope you could make a video about roofers that replace old roofs and put nails every foot of the gutters to hold them up while removing old drip edge and then covering up the nails with new drip edge. Just for me as a gutter installer to have to almost destroy the new drip edge trying to remove the hidden nails to replace the gutters that most roofers dont know about keeping the gutter pitched and wedged correctly to keep the bottom parallel with the ground/90* from the wall.... (roofers and gutter guys should be friends not enemies) we could help each other make more money 💵 💵 💵

In my town is educated the roofers early on to run the shingles past the drip edge 3/4 of an inch.I was met with protest but eventually they came around when I told them what if people don't put gutters on that go behind the drip edge.? The water's running down the fascia and rotting it. They will come around and the roofers will be your friends. Understand they are reluctant to admit they've been doing it wrong. The mesh must be the best. I have a gutter product that came in sections similar to Leaf Guard and I'm just sick of it. I live in an area of Idaho that just swarms with wasps who like to build nests in the gutter then after season when the rain comes the big nests clog the downspouts. I would think the mesh type is the way to go. I will switch before next season for sure.

I recently have installed a micro mesh gutter, called Gutter guard sold at Home Depot. It is a stainless steel micro mesh ,4 ft lengths .I am replacing old vinyl mesh style gutter screen 3ft sections, which are showing their age due to sun damage and glued on plastic screens are peeling off. I have large pin oak trees in my yard over 50 ft. Which constantly drop leafs and twigs on my roof and gutters after high winds. But I am extremely impressed with the new Gutter guards on their strength, durability, effectiveness, ease of installation and cost. I did watch your videos as research for types of gutter guards and their effectiveness, nice job, keep up the good work. I do have a 3 story house with over 180 ft of gutter length on entire home and garage. But these Gutter guards are screwed down to the gutter lip on my house vs screwed to fascia and gutter lip. But they can be screwed to fascia if needed. But I’m hoping these will last a very long time and not breaking down due to sun damage and high winds.

I’m going to look into these. It’s insane what “professional” gutter people want for their products. I like the 4’ lengths you mention. I had some vinyl covers on my old house but they were only about 2’ long. But even those I had to remove usually once or twice a year because the maple tree “helicopters” would land and get stuck in the mesh openings then rot and clog the gutters.

I’m a gutter installer. Been doing it for about 2 hours. Lol. Man, you did pull ups on your gutters?!! That’s insane. I am replacing my gutters, and will be using some kind of guard. I clean my gutters about six times a year. Your video is helpful.

Your insights are very good and you showed me a product I was unaware of, the 90 degree piece. I've had problems with my gutter cover ever since the roof was replaced due to hail damage. The hail destroyed the gutter cover (Gutter Helmet) but left the gutter intact. Roofing company did not take care in how they delivered new roofing materials to the roof, just standard ladders leaning against the gutters. I believe they have caused the problem I have in one area where the water always overflows up to five feet from the 90 degree corner. The overflow is on the side of a steep and long roof line as well. I've measured the gutter and see where it hangs down and is not level. I've used plastic wedges to help with the balancing but it's still not the answer. The roofer has installed deflectors in the area affected but it doesn't help during heavy rain. I'm going to buy the 90 degree corne piece you recommended and see if that'll do the trick.

Only problem now is getting someone from Leaf Solutions to let me know where I can purchase the miters. I called their home office and left a message yesterday but no one has returned my call. Their "contact us" portion of their website doesn't work properly, so I'm not sure how to reach them. Their customer service ratings were a constant 1 of 5 as well, looks like a good product with no sales & support??? Ideas???

Watched a few of your videos, really informative & no BS, thanks. Would love your opinion on a solution for my house. Don't have a gutter problem, but because I have ridge tiles, small birds can get under the ridges to nest. Have a very large roof, so looking for a cost effective & long lasting way to block ridges & stop birds nesting. Thanks

Can you give an information on Ultimate Gutter Guard by Southern?

I have tried just about all of them... I have not found one that works. I live in a pine forest and pine needles get stuck in the guards and makes a worst mess than before. Plus the shingles tiny stones goes in the gutter and builds up. All guards I had to take off and still clean the gutter. All they di was made more work for me.

How about Guttershield G3. Could you test that too?

Good day, I just came across your video and wanted to inquire if you've tried Gutterdome? I had them put on my house and they seem to be working really well. I liked them over leaf filter because their product is not plastic which out in the California heat does not do well. Any thoughts?

Ultimate Gutter Guard by Southern estimated almost 20,000 my whole house and the main gutter they said was terrible was from Leaf Guard style... SMDH

So I have a terra cotta style roof shingle not the asphalt type. Do any of the best gutter guards work well with this type of roof?

What is your opinion of the Hydro Shield product?

I have been a full time gutter company for 10 years and do all of the work myself. My experience is the first black type with the black holes does not work. I installed some on a neighbors house 10 years ago. After 5 years they were full and I saw a garden every day in their gutters as I drove home. I just installed a micro mesh system 2 years ago on their house. I have been putting up micro mesh for years and have found they are the best. I like the Costco ones or the plain gutter glove micro mesh.

Just went outside to clean out a bunch of crap, bought the house last year and it has those first black mesh ones, garbage.

In spite of the hype, all gutter filtration systems require at least some maintenance, some get seriously clogged and require a lot due to local climate, foliage, and other conditions. The buildup of organic material on exterior surfaces is just the way it goes...

the only maintenance required with Waterloov is a broom brush off and that's only in the midwest where oak leaves and pitch sticks to the top of the cover. In my territory we have cedar trees which shed all year. I've never been back to clean a gutter or honor my warranty on any of the jobs I've ever done. That would be at least 100,000 in the 22 years I've done this.

^This. I think people want a set it and forget it solution and that just doesn't exist. I installed the plastic micro-mesh style and I've found a long handled brush, some water and a little bit of dish soap is all you need. Twice a year wipe them down and rinse them off and it clears all the clog caused by single debris and pollen and it only takes an hour.

Mine has just been installed and it looks like it will do the job nicely. The Leaf Filter price started out at $9000, then $6500, then $2550. I'm in a wildfire zone in NorCal and $2550 is cheap to prevent blowing burning embers from setting dry leaves in the gutters on fire. I blew the gutters out 2 weeks ago with an Echo 770 backpack blower and after the winds the other day they got half full of leaves and pine needles. I blew them out before the installers got here. Cost me $14.10 per foot installed.

Really great videos, thanks Dmitry. I can't find anything like this in the UK. Can any UK viewers help? The alternative is for me to make something myself using ultra fine stainless steel mesh.

Every one worries about the leaves but rarely ever consider the seeds that the trees produce.

I'm looking for a leaf guard but also want to keep the squirrels out..which do you recommend?

The problem with all these (which I have tried), is in heavy rain, the water glides right across the filter and over the edge. It forms surface tension.

Thank you for these 2 videos. My problem wasn't addressed, though. I have a corrugated roof over my deck and the gutter end view is, \_/\_/. They butt up against the outside edge of the gutter... I'm going to have to start cutting aluminum just to clean them. Now, I was thinking Gutterstuff to fill the end of the roof and the top edge of the gutter. If I cut 60, 3" x 5" triangles they will fit in each end gap and stop the Maple Tree "Copter seeds" from plugging it up every year. My deck is going to rot out. Any help is appreciated!
