3 bars of opal color. Which one do I cut?
Welcome to Black Opal Direct,
This opal is a nobby from the Allawah Opal Fields that came to me as a rub with one side showing magical color and the other... a challenge.
How do I get the best gem without losing color?
Is the middle color bar worth the risk?
Let's give it a crack!

Mr Justin, I've been a rock hound since childhood and was never given the opportunity to nor did i ever take the opportunity, to pursue a life in your field, your passion, so to speak. I have a business, small engine repair. Watching you and living vicariously, through your experiences, have rekindled that fire that used to be there. I have kinda serious ADHD, I don't take medication, rarely take aspirin. It's very hard for me to focus on a social media platform, or any subject for any length of time. Maybe a week, and I'll move on to something else. Your videos, your voice, the way that you teach and present yourself, and your knowledge is very impressive. You have gained a fan, a friend for life. One day, I would very much like to come visit. Thank you, from Asheville, NC. And thank you for helping calm my mind, while rekindling something that has been missing for years. Happy cutting!!
I don't even know how the KZread algorithm took me to you, but here I am sitting, watching the 5th video in a row, just staring at the screen in pure awe. It takes a real artist to see and free the beauty hidden in those raw stones.

It's the magic that Justin brings out of the Opals that keeps me here ! I'm not disappointed with any of his work !
the blue and green side is my favorite, but this would be an amazing 2-sided pendant because each side is so unique with a completely different color and pattern.
That opal would be really nice just with a band of gold around edge as a reversible pendant. Love watching, keep up with the good work

I thought the same thing
I personally love the odd shapes, I bought my wife a small pendant years ago and what drew me to it was its irregular triangular shape. For me its often that unique shape that grabs my attention and makes the gem even more unique than just its pattern and colour adding another level to it.

Same for me, I want pieces that are unique like that so I know for sure no ones going to be wearing the same thing when I step out wearing it.

Totally agree.
For some reason I love the double-sided crystal opals in your own collection. There's something special about not having a blind side
Love how you explained your thinking that went into cutting the triangle off...really making me want to pick this up as a hobby
How ever you cut them, I am just glad you take us along to show the amazing stones nature provides and your experience exposes.
As a pendant one could reverse it for 2 stones in one!

Totally speechless.. wow, the choice is insane! Double sided stone with different colours and patterns😍
I was mesmerized with the dazzling dance of all the colors. Such a beautiful piece, you did a phenomenal job of bring out everything this opal wanted to show.
So 2 minutes in I'd say leave that beautiful top as a solo stone and cut it to leave potch with it and make a double sided stone with the other 2 color bars. Or vice versa leave 2 different types of color on one stone.

You are all great dancers! Thank you for posting. I find your videos very focusing and calming.
Wow you guys just make me fall in love of this stones. As a Mexican a grow up on a small comunity back there, where they found “fire opals” but I never hear about all this beautiful colours. Keep making videos because here I am enjoying them thank you so much.
Congrats on 100k!!! And you've made the unique piece I was hoping for! Cheers from Switzerland!
Awesome, group dance! I’m dancing along! So happy for you!
Amazing gem. Always amazing to watch you work on such beautiful opal.
Both of these gems are so stunning it takes my breathe away. The smaller stone between the two is my favorite actually color wise. Someday when I can afford it I want to have a ring made with a stone of that quality. I can dream (: lol. Love your channel and brings life to me. Truly a beautiful channel and beautiful work. Take care love ya all!
both opals came wonderful. i had a feeling going to the second layer would be not as good. great job! look forward to the next awesome opal.
thats so cool that you guys all get along in the business. you advertised for someone else just being an honest and decent person talking about your differences in taste. good people do that.
It's so nice watching those beautiful Opals come to life! Awesome stones!
This is probably one of my favourite gems I've seen on this channel the 2 years I've been following you guys, so bizarre how parallel the colour bars are!

@@obieobrien5883 I buy small parcels and rub out small stones by hand, but I don't really spend more than a few hundred pounds(£1=2$AUS) but for that price it's just a slight plays of colour but 80% potch, maybe 1 stone every few parcels is nice when finished and polished.
I nearly died when I saw those jars on the shelf😲 My life for a jar of opal rough!! Lol Love learning from you Justin, keep bringing it on👍
Your passion for your work shows!
What a gorgeous piece!! Awesome video!!
Beautiful opal i jus got a few crystal opals my daughter loves them she still talks about urs an ur script pattern opal but keep up the good work. From Allen an my daughter silas from texas
So beautiful! 😭❤️✨ Could you slice the larger stone between the middle bar and the colourful side and make a double sided green/blue stone? 😊

I was so excited to watch this! This will make a gorgeous pendent! I love watching your thought process as you cut, it’s so so exciting to see where a piece will end up especially when you think it will go one way and it goes another. *happy dance for 100K*

Hey Justin Is it possible to cut longitudinally, between the layers? Is there a saw that thin available to you? Great work as always. Cheers!
@davehan241
Жыл бұрын
0:39"I need to have a look at those 🤔Curiosity is killing me." Now I'm MORE curious about successfully cutting the stone longitudinally than the original curiosity of what color was underneath. I'm guessing the value of the two pieces separately are worth more than it sandwiched as it is now.
Well, the one bar is very thick. Keep that as the backing for that side. Then create a double sided gem from the other half, leaving the gray potch in the middle.
100k!! congrats to the Black Opal Direct team! Gorgeous stone
Well done Justin! I just love your videos. You have the best job in the world! Thanks for taking us along, it certainly has increased my craving for one of these beautiful masterpieces of nature. Also loved your 100K rave at the end! Keep up the great work!

Gorgeous opal. Love the celebration dance.
I could easily imagine a pair of earrings out of the triangle to complement the big oval in a pendant. Or a triangle pendant for everyday/ casual dress then bring out the big oval for events.
Dance away Justin, You deserve it. I thought you were going to go for the middle colour bar also. Dame Agatha Christie, I am afraid, he is more fun. At least, at our age.

Opal is my favorite gemstone, I just found your videos and I love watching these amazing videos of gemstone cutting!
Cut a groove around the edge and mount with a fat gold wire so it doesn’t cover any of the Opal’s color

I love the blue green flagstone side. Really interesting to see your thought processes.
That opal is SO gorgeous! Congrats on 100k!!!!
Dang Justin, just dang! Legend mate, unbelievable. I took away a lesson today like every other day, I've never thought of cutting a corner to see a deeper color bar and also have stone 1 now be an oval. I always go tear drop to maximize on stones like that and I either risk it and grind down to the next bar or I stay with what's on top. So believe it or not some of those very simple ideas and things you do can actually seem like a stroke of genius to a newer cabber. Still the mind set of bigger is better, preserve it all in 1 stone. Now I'm starting to realize that large is good but quality of color is possibly even more important than a large stone that is bland. Tha is for all you do in the community mate. After years on my wet flat lap I am finally a single $400 payment away from having my very own 6 wheel cabbing unit with a flat lap on the far left to make setting simple and a buffing wheel on the far right side. So technically 8 spinning things with grit or polish on them.
I loved the intro with all of you dancing!
Congrats on the 100k Brother Justin & sister malinda! Keep up the great work
