Moving around the fingerboard smoothly and effortlessly as possible is something we should all be aiming for - but, it can be a serious challenge to master that type of fluidity.
This is exactly why I recommend that all of my students not only study technique, but break down the study of technique into bite size exercises focusing on things such as shifting, plucking hand technique, flying fingers, posture, and much more.
One of the key factors to gaining a smooth and fluid type movements around the fingerboard is to have a very efficient shifting technique - as in, how we move are hands between positions on the fingerboard, and where our attention is focused while doing so.
In this lesson you're going to learn 3 great shifting exercises that will help you not only understand how to work on your overall shifting technique - but also the importance of visualisation when shifting.
As always, see you in the shed...
Scott :)

Finally showed me something to solve flying fingers!
"Oh that video may help me fix my shifting issues" - 3 minutes in "My life was a lie"
what a GREAT lesson... you rock Scott
Awesome! Makes total sense. Thank you for the explanation, much appreciated.
Your videos have been very helpful. Thank you very much.
Wow. This lesson created a breakthrough for me!
awesome exercise. thank you so much!
Thank you for your video!!!
Basic but really helpful lesson. Nice work as always!! thanks for all the awesome videos!!!! :)
Hey Scott, just want to say thank you very much!
Thank you Scott, this is another great exercise which I'll be working on. I've never really practiced scales on one string much, but I can see how it links up the entire fretboard now. I'll be expanding this exercise to include the major scale on every string in every position up the fretboard!

Chris Edwards Awesome Chris! practising scales on one string is a great exercise.
Thank you !
you are the man!!
Fab lesson Scott
Nice excercise, remembering a similar lesson by Pebber Brown on Guitar.
Great lesson Scott! I find that shifting is often overlooked on bass guitar, while it is a focus point on many string instruments, for example good ol' double bass. good stuff Plus I had to transcribe that last lick cause it's just too cool
Damn, it's incredible to see how little I know about bass playing... one simple excersise and it takes ages to learn... thanks for sharing!!
I think these are really good exercise techniques, and I think I will work on them right now!! Thanks for good advices every time Scott, I really enjoy your videos
alfabet backwords is one of DUI tests here in US if you are drunk lol, cant even say that sober, nice shifting btw

You can say the alphabet backwards relatively easily by adapting your visualization lesson. For playing bass, you look at the next position while playing the current note(s). For the alphabet, as you say "Z", think "Y". As you say "Y", think "X". Do I get bonus bonus points?

Absolutely agree about saying the alphabet backwards. Supposedly frequently used for sobriety testing, but I don't see how. I would fail stone sober every time.
@samgendler
6 жыл бұрын
The only context in which it would be used in a sobriety test is to attempt to trick the suspect into saying "but I couldn't even do that if I was sober," but the tendency to say that even when you ARE sober surely means that countless lawyers have long since demolished the validity of such a statement in court.
Reminds me of an advanced driving course I took - one lesson was all about looking in the right place at the right time.
I LIKE IT. :)
16:50 you are great mate. you make me laugh so i clapped at pc. you are great :) thank you for your videos ;)
I give you 10 points for this video!😂 Thanks a lot, Scott.😘

The seesawing is getting me
i usually keep gazin at where my last note was at. still contemplating it even tho ive moved on up the fretboard
Hey Scott, is there a way I could buy the Vanderklay bass amp and have them ship here.

Dan Pelos Ha - awesome Dan! Hope you're well man... see you at the next show! :)
Greetings from Chicago. Home of the blues and pizza
I would actually like a tutorial on "feeling" or "sensing" the distance to move. Scott is a big proponent of "looking" at the fingerboard and "seeing" his patterns and shifts. Why be mentally tied (distracted) with that when you should be moving up and down based on pitch changes or when the chord progression demands? For example - the music requires a shift from position 3 on the A string (C note) up to a F on the same string, a major third interval. I would like tips on how to improve that accuracy. When reading a fast tempo score one doesn't have much time to look at the fingerboard. I'll probably look at what double bassists do.

Playing Simandl with his 3 finger technique helped me a lot with not having my eyes glued to the bass
Where's the tab and notation to this lesson ? Put the link here pls. :) Great lesson Scott ! Btw Scott what are you think about Carol Kaye and her bass learning method ? I'm just curious ;) Cheers !
silky smoothe!!
I have a really short little finger and small hands in general so find it hard to reach across the fretboard towards where the neck meets body. I also can't keep my thumb on the back of the neck when trying to reach the e string even with my index finger! Any suggestions for a work around? Thanks
When i play notes my thumb (behind the fretboard) gets all bent and weird. is this normal?
Hello Lisa :))
Great lesson Scott, though I'm thinking that an unlined fretless is not the best bass for me to use for it. It does however work as an EXCELLENT fretless intonation exercise as well. I should to go get my fretted from the rehearsal room, my brain is getting fried.
yes, I can actually do the alphabet backwards, I had a girlfriend that challenged me to learn it that way, it always blows people away.
HA! That’s my glove from high school! Where the hell did you find that thing!
what happened to this bass, scott? it sounds so good
So when moving down the neck, do you try to have all four fingers pressing on each fret and then lift them one at a time (pinky, ring, middle, index), or do you just apply pressure on the specific fret being played?

Pity you didn't get a reply. I'm curious too. It gets recommended but I find it works as an exercise then goes out the window when I play for real.
i sing it: zyxwvut, srq, then comes p, onm, lkj ihgf, EDCBA (like lmnop) I learned because i saw a song on it, its called CBA's

Suerte.
Been able to recite the alphabet backwards for years, since I was a small child, but these bass lessons are beating me down!! Ha ha!! Thanks for all the info.

3 stars for the video. 1. you have to master it first. 2. you have to figure out why uther (yes uther) people can't do it. 3. you have to figure out how to teach it. I do this type of playing a lot, just did an hour and a half of bathroom practice. You are sorta with me in the bathroom, sorry 'bout that,) thinking of tips that stuck. This tip is like a boxer looking at his own right-hand hammer while he punches... I bought my used Ibanez bass for £90, best thing I ever did 𝄢𝄢𝄢
I like how you always check your English as if English was your second language. 😄
Hi I just got a bass guitar brand new and it sounds like shit on open string, it looks like the strings are touching the neck and yes it is tuned but I need to know if its the truss rod or something else.
@michaelbenzinger8367
9 жыл бұрын
It probably is the truss rod if the strong is touching the fretboard. You should try adjusting it and see if it helps. If it doesn't help, get it checked out.
this a classical bass exercise also

You know how stupid I felt watching you follow your finger up the fret board and realizing that's what I do lol. That explanation for dummies is peak, although the demonstration would've been enough for me.
This video came on autoplay and I swear I was practicing the exact same thing so me and the video sync'd up for 6 or 7 notes till I freaked out and stopt playing...geezzz
love how u socialize with jour wife ..so respectfull.even when youre accually at work....lol.
I always look ahead but I don't do frets...
I can definitely say the alphabet backwards. Fairly quickly, I might add.
The note back up is (C D E F G A B C)
I learned to say the alphabet backwards when I was a kid. I've had it as a stupid human trick ever since.
I can say my alphabet backwards but I worked at a library for years so I kinda had to get good with my alphabet because everything was alphabetical
I can't keep my index down while playing my pinky
it is possible to practise this with a pick?
i can say the alphabet backwards... thanks for the lesson.
Score what’s the point of the glove now that there’s no fingers on the glove. 🤣
So look where we going first? Like chess??
