Bench grinder/sander... Pretty stupid design to be honest. The sandpaper is glued to the rotating shaft so you can basically only use this once or twice until the sandpaper is ruined and then you have to throw the whole device away because the paper cant be replaced.

I'm not seeing any "awesome ideas." I'm seeing some very poorly made products that will work for about 2 minutes before becoming useless. And the sad part is, most of these things have actual commercial substitutes that would work better and cost less money. A cigarette lighter is cheaper and more functional than the first idea. A dremel with a sander wheel probably costs about the same as the second idea, but will last for years and requires no assembly. I'm not sure what the purpose of the last item was.. but awesome? nah. How this video ended up with almost 9 million views, I have no idea.

The third idea looked to me like it could have been some sort of attempt at a doorbell until the clip. Still, I'm with you on the poorly made part. I was concerned about the hot-glued 9Vs, I can't see them lasting long enough to warrant permanently attaching them to the device... well, maybe the lighter idea but not the other two.

People miss the point of doing these things. You don't just do it because you need a lighter or a dremel tool or a noise trap, you do it for the enjoyment of creation, technology, problem solving, and brain engagement. It's like people who build things on minecraft, or carve statues. It's a hobby, and as a bonus you get fun, useful little pieces of technology, and you develop your technological knowledge, allowing you to make ever more useful instruments. People once said to Thomas Eddison "why are you bothering, just go buy an oil lamp" but those people didn't end up inventing the light bulb did they :)

Instead of gluing the battery to the project, I would glue a patch of velcro to the frame, then whenever you have to change batteries, glue a piece of velcro to the new battery and attach it that way. That way when the first battery dies, your project isn't ruined.

I was out camping and ran out of batteries, wire, bolts and nuts, switches and hot glue, and forgot my glue gun at home, so I had to drive 2 hours back to town to go to Walmart to buy all this shit, by the time I got back to camp it was too late to light my bonfire.
