Negatives can be turned into positives. I am almost 42 now, and when I was in my early thirties I fell into a really deep depression that was emotionally crippling and had lasted a long time, but it eventually brought me closer to god since I was using spirituality in order to heal my depression, and it encouraged me to work towards becoming a better servant towards God.

I had two daughters whom aren't on the spectrum first then I had both my boys whom are on the spectrum. Every single child has taught me something different. My oldest was the first baby I've ever held so I was lost in the sauce with her. Lol my last two have taught me more about myself and my strength and the world it's almost unbelievable. I think as a mom not hearing I love you come from your child is heart breaking, I mean we all long to hear those words. Both my boys being non verbal, other than saying momma or dadda (each says one of them lol so me and dad at least get to hear it) my 4 year old I used to always say I love you, by pointing to my eye and chest then his, and I remember so vividly the first time he did that, telling me ily and I cried tears of joy. My non verbal son told me he loved me, even tho I knew it. Now my youngest who is 2 seems to be even lower on the spectrum and I know, love needs no words. He cuddles and loves when I give him kisses unlike my 4 year old. Me and my husband says all the time, they are a blessing, all our children are! They are all unique and offer something different to our family as a whole and I think a statement I say all the time kinda blows people away and that's, if God came down and said I can take their autism away right now,but they wouldn't have the same personality and traits they have right now, I would decline w.o a second thought. I love all my children and I'm so blessed and thankful to be their mommy. Even tho it's a struggle and I sometimes don't get to sleep much at all. The thought of them not being them, breaks me. 🥰🙌🏼🙏🏼💛

Ugh......You can always count on my notoriously LONG narratives to make your contributions seem very brief!!😄 It is actually one of my Autism traits to have "no filters" and do "data dumps." Believe it or not, it is literally impossible for me to simply say YES or NO or to be brief. So you are do very well and far more brief than I.

It makes me glad to know that Ian and Conner both have a strong desire to work and know what types of things they can do. It took me so long to figure out how to present myself correctly at work. I always worked really hard and had a good attitude, but unfortunately I just didn't have the focus and I didn't give the right signals. I got fired without knowing it from my first job, I quit the 2nd job when they realized I was out of dress code, 3rd Job I did good work but I struggled to give the right kind of attention to my bosses (I had a manager tell me I was black balled for promotion, but that he thought it was wrong of them to do that), 4th Job I did much better but I ruined my car DoorDashing. I have a great working relationship with my bosses at my current job its amazing to have acceptance and understanding from work, Its just so much better

It sounds like Alister would be an excellent care bear or care bear cousin since the care bears and care bear cousins have the exact same positive aspects to their personalities that Allister has❤

Ian love to have you being my mechanic. He's such an interesting young man with the stories he shares. I have been told I retell stories for me it means something I am saying is that important. Ian seeing your outdoorsy life I think I would enjoy hiking with you. You are likeable the way you are. Connor this is the time to use that creativity like getting really good on the piano or making videos. Now you can enjoy it and it can be a passion that can turn into a job you enjoy later. Your passion is making a difference in Allister's life there's so many siblings that aren't like that. Allister is such a happy kid. This world is better with your joy. They're 3 awesome people that have autism. I am sure they have friends because they're likeable people and I believe they are making others better people.

Man, thank you for this perspective. I have 4 young children, one of whom has autism. My oldest also has hearing loss, which in other ways, brings similar challenges. Hearing how your sons have blossomed into young men is so encouraging and I can envision my sons the same way ❤️

This channel has helped me understand myself better, its given me a lot to reflect on, and its been eye opening to continue to realize that certain struggles in my life especially as a child have an explanation. I never got help as a child, there were times when my parents just missed the red flag, there were times when people tried to tell them, but they had a hard time accepting it. Its been so amazing to see how you and Britney have done in response to the needs your boys face daily. I think it has inspired me to work on my own issues in a way that is less judgemental and harsh. I've had to be harsh just to try to keep up, especially when I didn't understand what was happening, I felt very negatively towards myself.

I've really been fighting to have a right to exist, its been really horrible especially since no one was able to hear me asking for help, no one believed I had Autism for a long time. I kept letting it go, but the struggles made it obvious over and over

❤❤❤ I can see aspects of all three in myself, honesty I've learned needs to be shaded for peoples egos (it can be hard sometimes to not be blunt), thirst for knowledge I've learned to keep a critical eye (smart people can get things wrong, it takes a bigger person to admit it), joy in the simple things (smile, be happy... {only a few know my whole story - how did I survive? I guess it's keeping a positive attitude and watching butterflies 😊}). Children we teach them but also we learn from them, keep learning from them ❤❤❤.

12:39 I've never understood why a large majority of people just wear their pajamas all day everyday. Even though my own personal experience with being on the autism spectrum makes me dependent on government benefits besides just the income that I earn from a job, I am still a hard worker who tries to be the best version of myself possible, and I am a lot dressier than someone who just wears their pajamas. It's not that I wear a suit and tie, but I wear casual clothes that I look nice in. I do enjoy wearing casual clothes that I look good in, and I think that it might be one of the positive aspects of my autism since I saw a Adam Sandler movie called "Punch Drunk Love", where Adam Sandler played someone who seemed like he might be on the autism spectrum, and he also enjoyed dressing up similar to me, only he dressed more formally than me since he wore a suit even though he only ran a small business that sold products to hotels rather than being a CEO of a company.

(YES, another long Dave narrative!) Of the many years I have had to deal with Autism (over half a century!), there are two instances where Autism had a major impact on my life. Interestingly, they were not things directly related to me. They were two different instances in which I observed. Both have had a profound impact on my life to this day. The first situation was watching the Autism Speaks videos "I am Autism" and "Autism Every day." Like most, I too was shocked and infuriated at shameful and hateful manner in which Autism Speaks presented Autism. In the video "Autism Everyday" the former Executive Vice President of Autism Speaks is seen declaring how she wanted to put her Autistic daughter in her car and drive off a cliff. All this while the daughter was playing right behind her. HOWEVER, just as moving to me was the thousands of parents that responded to the videos. Thousands of parents stood up and proclaimed their love and compassion for their Autistic children, no matter how complex or challenging. Their undying love was and will always be there! This was very contrary to the "destroyer of families" that Autism Speaks was proclaiming. I have read many of the Parents responses to date, and many are very moving and deeply emotional. Truely, the reality is, Family Love is far more prevalent in the Autism community than hate. The second incident was watching an extremely moving You Tube channel. While searching for a better understanding of Autism, I ran across "Kreed's World". Kreed had complex Autism and many medical challenges. Kreed's Mother documented much that her and Kreed faced almost daily. To me, everyone touched by Autism MUST visit "Kreed's World." There are many videos, many are very moving and emotional. However, there is one video in particular that sticks with me everyday and has moved me deeply. “Teenager with Autism: expressing his thoughts on Autism” to me is one of the most emotional videos I have ever watched on Autism. Kreed was non-verbal and used an AAC to communicate. He was able to articulate a surprisingly large amount of his thoughts and emotions. In the video, the mother interviews Kreed on how he is treated and what he thinks of his Autism. At one point, the mothers asks “How does it feel to have Autism?” Shockingly, Kreed responds “I love it.” In asking why he loves it, Kreed responds (paraphrasing) he loves Autism because that is who he is. How Profound! Here was a boy facing daily a huge amount of challenges. Yet Kreed articulated and understood Autism was part of what made him who he was so he was okay with is Autism. Sadly, Kreed died suddenly of medical complications in 2016. His mother has left the channel intact so people can experience a boy’s life with complex Autism. You MUST watch this video, I am sure you too will be deeply moved and gain so much insight. Through the years, I have learned there are many facets of Autism. There are those who have a family member with complex Autism and things can be really tough. They may feel slighted by those on the spectrum that are more articulate and vocal. I get it. Autism is complex and we ALL have many challenges. I have learned respect, patience, and compassion for all touched by Autism. It has changed my life. “Autism Family” is a place where we can peak through the window of a family facing many challenges. What we all see and learn is that no matter how difficult the times, Love is a major component we all can use and share. It is the bond that makes us all “Special.” So do not judge what is seen here as measuring your Autism experience any lesser or more severe.

I only found this channel yesterday, so this is the first "long Dave response" I've read, but I love it. Thank you for taking the time to write out a thoughtful response. I only found out 3 months ago that I'm autistic, along with 4 of my 7 children, and reading the comments on KZread about other people's experiences has been as helpful as the videos I've watched in coming to understand my own experiences.

Have you thought about letting Connor getting a summer job like mowing lawns or walking dogs? He can make his own hours even. Maybe he's a bit young though.... Maybe just pay him to do chores, if you can afford it that is. Also, every summer there's a Camp Artism for people 12+ on the spectrum. It's pricey, but it's something I really wanna save for. Have you guys ever looked into it?

What is conners noise sensitivity like because this is the age where kids start asking to mow people’s lawns if you teach him how he could do some small jobs from neighbors that you trust. Like lawn mowing or shoveling snow.

we have one daughter, age 4. I just found your channel. Did any of your children have regressive autism? Our daughter has very little verbal skills and also may have ADHD. Social interaction is limited, she is very affectionate tho.

Ian working with cars, Connor possibly an engineer, with Allister time will tell. I’m autistic myself, and found a partner and she helps me a lot. I’ve never lived on my own. I honestly feel a bit like my fiancé took the place of my mom, lol. But we all find paths that work for us. All the best, Autism Family.
