Great content. loving your raised bed 75% compost 25% vermiculite. Im planning doing this season but with mushroom compost, what do you think. Im thinking maybe 75% mushroom compost and 25% perlite since mushroom compost keeps too much moisture?

I never hear you talk about fertilizer.Can you please talk about what is best please. Thanks!!! Love your videos,wish I found you sooner

Hello! I recently found your channel and I love your approach to gardening, so I subscribed. I think similarly and like to try new things in my zone 4 Canada garden. However knowing a bit more about your growing zone would better help me utilize some of your ideas in my area. So I was wondering what growing zone you are in? (And I apologize if this question has been asked and answered before, but I could not find it in my preliminary look around). Thanks for sharing all this great garden content! I look forward to watching you throughout this next growing season!

I'm also in zone 4 (Calgary) and from what I've seen on his channel so far (and others) I don't really think it'd matter too much which zone he's in? I think for an annual garden the start and end of the season and rainfall are much more important those aren't necessarily dependent on minimum winter temps. That said, I think he's located in BC somewhere, probably around the Vancouver area so probably around zone 7 or 8?

Really great question here! To be honest it's one I've struggled to think through how to share/discuss because I want to be able to help people outside of my growing zone and so many of the principles apply from one zone to the next. But, I can absolutely see the merit in mentioning it a bit here and there and then encouraging people to adjust for their zone. I'm Zone 7B here in Squamish! Really appreciate the thoughtfulness of this Q and let me know what you think - as well as if you have any ideas on how to share that information in a relevant manner!

Correcto - Zone 7B. And yeah I agree that with a little bit of adjusting you can apply these principles to many regions!

Where do you get your compost?

We have garden boxes & have filled & topped up each year with a garden blend from a local farmer that contains aged manure & sand & garden mix. Trying to dig in our compost bin as well each year & topped the boxes with leaves in fall. Besides worm castings to add when sowing or transplanting would you recommend anything else?

I've found pH testers to actually be fairly accurate - more so than at-home soil tests. As always, buy it nice or buy it twice so make sure you spend a few extra dollars to get one that has been well reviewed :)

Can I use the mind and soil bags I have as mini grow bags?

Absolutely you can! Or you can put them around the outside of a pot to spruce it up a bit if you wanted to keep the plant in a pot. Or you can use it to store garlic, potatoes, dhalia tubers, or you can compost them! Lots of options :D

Hi! Just starting indoor garden. Where are you getting your compost? I can't used from my compost because it is infested with little red fireants, slugs, bleck. Is there somewhere and what kind of compost is on the market?

Woohoo! Thrilled to hear you're getting started! There are two options - buying by the bag or buying in bulk. For smaller volumes, just head to your local nursery and look for bags of Organic Compost - I'm a big fan of Sea Soil. So if you can get your hands on that go with that! And then if you are needing a larger volume you'll want to head to a soil depot and get their 100% compost organic ammender - bonus points if it is OMRI listed. You can usually pick these up by the half yard or full yard - and then you should be in a great place! Let me know if you have any questions on this!

Thanks Jordan ! Thoughts of cardboard and grass cuttings as a base for unground garden? Have u heard of Tagro? Also we live on the Washington coast lots of rain in the winter months? Concern of soil leaching?

Im confused because i heard you shouldnt grow in 100 % compost 😢 ive been filling my beds so many ways most are great i have one that wasnt so great but i really like what your saying like i said im confused

Hey Jordan! I have two larger containers that I grow carrots and beets in- but am not sure if the container mix would work for theses as well! They hold, I believe, 12 gallons of soil. Thank you in advance!!

That's a great amount of soil!! You could definitely move more in the direction of what I do with 75% compost and 25% vermiculite!

I like your blend of 3 parts compost, 2 parts Coco coir or peat moss and one part Vermiculite. I want to use this in my several raised beds that are filled halfway up with organic materials . Just need one foot to fill for each bed. To fill each of these beds I need 7 yd of mix. For the life of me I cannot figure out how much of each ingredient. I know that it is 3 parts 2 parts and one part but I don't know how to figure that out. Could you please help me with this. I want to use this mix because I'm doing intensive gardening sometimes called square foot gardening. I like your mix for this purpose and I hope you're hoping that it will work. I plan on using 3 different kinds of compost

For each yard you'd need: 1/2 Yard of Compost, 1/3rd Yard of Coco Coir, 1/6th Yard of Vermiculite. So 7 yards would be: 3.5 yards Compost, 2.33 yards Coco Coir, 1.16 yards Vermiculite.

Thank you so much for your reply. So would you recommend this to be a good mix To top off the last 12 inches of my raised beds To grow my vegetables? We live in Oregon so we do have a lot of rain but it does get hot around July and August and the first part of September.

@@ireneasanoma2925 This is a great mix. Although, it'll be fairly expensive and labor-intensive to get going with 7 yards! You may be better off ordering from a garden center and topping your beds off with this mix next year as they all settle and start to break down. Not sure about the left coast, but on the East Coast pretty much every garden center/landscape supply has some sort of compost mix available by the yard. Best of luck!

Would it be wise to use 3 parts compost, maybe 3 different finds plus 2 parts peat moss and one part Vermeculite for intensive gardening in a raised garden bed?

What are your thoughts on a mineral based mix? Such as Gary's best top pot. Gary matsumoka video called "what's an ideal soil" is very interesting. He's essentially saying organic material shouldn't be mixed into the soil as it uses the oxygen and that's not what happens in nature. It should be to dressed.

Would you add compost to your raised bed every year, if you've filled it with 100% compost or 75% compost 25% vermiculite?

That is a GREAT question! I would be adding 100% compost in the subsequent years, 1-2" to the top!

you use way too much compost. i use 50% soil 25% compost and 25% compost , then add compost and a little bit of perlite every growing season.
