$3 All-In-One Cook Kit - DIY

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How to make an "All-In-One" cook kit that includes a cook pot, stove, stand/windscreen, and even fuel! This cheap little combo is very easy to put together and is a safe alternative to DIY alcohol stoves. The kit features an 10cm Imusa mug that serves as a versatile cook pot, a stand/windscreen which wraps around the stove/fuel canister for easy storage and transport, and a diethylene glycol fuel canister with a 2 hour total burn time. The materials used for this cookset can be obtained at your local dollar store and Walmart. The liquid "diglycol" fuel used in this system is a great alternative to methanol based gel chafing fuels in that it produces a higher heat output (approx. 890 BTUs), is non-flammable and safe, and can be sealed for later use. The heat output is not nearly as great as with typical backpacking stoves such as those that use alcohol or butane/propane fuels. This stove system does produce a nice mid-range burn however and allows for diversity when preparing meals other than those which simply require boiling water. All-in-all, a good option for the occasional weekend hiker, the "budget backpacker", prepping, or simply as a backup cooking source in an emergency.

Sam's Club has these wicked fuel cans. I bought some a couple years ago and keep them in 50 cal. surplus ammo can emergency kits in the cars. Bumblebee tuna cans nest perfectly on the top if you cut out the bottom for the screw cap area, and punch some air holes in the side for airflow with a paper punch. Great setup!

This is great! I was looking for some alternative ways to make a sterno stove. I found some of the gel ones at my local Family Dollar. I am renting a small room in a house and trying to transition to a self sufficient off grid life style. With my little folding end table, cast iron skillet and $1 sterno I just needed something to support my skillet. This is great! Thank you! Now I can cook my meals entirely off grid.

You are very welcome my friend. And thank you for your kind words :-) The Imusa mugs in the Walmarts in our area are located on the same aisle as the cookie sheets and baking pans. They are usually on a bottom shelf and therefor sometimes difficult to spot. Hope that helps.... All the best!

I purchase the chaffing fuel at Roses or Mighty Dollar for $1.00. I thought I would include that for your subs in case any of them have these stores in their area. I using the chaffing fuel for my backpacking all the time and love it (just don't be in a hurry) :) I just cooked Hamburger Helper on my sterno stove last night and it turned out great. Great video!

Thank you very much for posting a heads-up on other options as to where to pick these up. I've only found them just recently at one dollar store in my area. I gotta agree with you 100% by the way... they certainly aren't the fastest cooking options out there, but they are great for more versatile options other than boiling water for dehydrated meals. All the best!

After all the fuel is used up save those can stoves, and replace the actual fuel with denatured alcohol with carbon felt. that will help it stay lit longer and may speed up the boil time. :) These can stove make great camping stoves.

The canisters I show here burn for about 2 hours or so. They are a great option for mid-range heat and meal prep, but they aren't the fastest for boiling water. They'll boil a couple of cups of water in about 12-15 mins (depending on conditions), so you can get about 8-10 boils out of one canister if that's all you're using them for. Hope that helps...

Thanks Sara :-) I'm right there with ya... I use the Sterno quite a bit around the house for various projects like my firestarters, but never really considered it as a useful option for anything else other than emergencies. The "diglycol" seemed like a much better alternative once I started researching it. I really like my alcohol stoves and all, but sometimes you just need a good mid-range (heat wise) option for pan frying up a good shore lunch :-)

I'd like to tell you what was on my mind as I watched this video. Here in NC we have the occasional storm that puts trees down on power lines and it might be more than a day or two before we are restored (10 days in the case of Fran in 1996). I've had frozen meat and pizza in my frig spoil! Better to cook some of it and stuff my self! Just having this as a "back up" could pay for it the first time. The price is right, takes almost no space to store. And I don't like alcohol burners.

  • @DC-et4li
    @DC-et4li3 жыл бұрын

These FancyHeat canisters are great for keeping things warm, simmering or maybe slow cooking. But they do not get hot enough to boil water. I've tested them extensively and it takes over 12 minutes just to get a pre-boil but it never achieves a rolling boil. It still think they're great and use them with my portable wood burning stove (like a FireBox). Once I cook something with butane, alcohol or other hot burning heat source, I use these to keep things warm until service time. That's actually what they are intended for and work quite well in that capacity. I do like you windscreen designs and the very cost effective setup you presented. I just think folks will be much happier using a hotter burning heat source. Unless you enjoy waiting 12-15 minutes for warm coffee.

Thanks Brother. Yeah, I use my little Sterno setup inside all the time for various "crafts", but wasn't too impressed with it for outdoor use. The diethylene glycol seems work a bit better outside (with a good windscreen). It isn't a speed demon as far as boiling water goes or anything, but so far it seems like an excellent option for meals that require "typical" preparation using medium heat... like bacon and eggs... mmmm ;-) All the best my Brother!

Hey John "reday-heat" wicked fuels have a very hard time boiling water unless in ideal conditions plus takes much longer to heat food or let alone cook raw food-sterno works much better. I tested all these when designing my "Blue Hill UL" sterno stove plus many other fuel options. 2pk sterno less than $5 at walmart or online by the case for less than $1/can shipped. The ready-heat cans can be made into a trangia type stove but be carefull to not melt the inner seal in the cap by snuffing it out

Just found this. I know this is old, but I picked up a bunch of these at the local dollar store in a 10-pack. I got to hinking from a bunch of project stoves I'd made, and just took the chance - I popped the top and replaced the wick with a long strip of Carbon Felt. I splayed it apart a few times there at the top. The burn temperature, although not extreme, is quite a bit hotter and I think is just burning ever so slightly faster - mainly because the flame is a tad less yellow. Boiling is almost 45 seconds faster so. Just something to throw out there for people still using these. I love them. Used it the last couple of times camping with the nephew. Lots of fun. Thanks for the tip! :)

I did this with Sterno and found the mesh needs to be only two square tall or it loses too much heat. Maybe it works with that dollar store stuff. My experience is that these lower power heat sources are great for frying eggs and heating beans. They don't have that hot spot that burns the pan and can be difficult to clean. But they are slow or never to boil water. That's usually ok if you want tea or coffee at 180 and have the time. Thanks for the video. Part of going outdoors for me is keeping it DIY and simple as possible.

You can buy these burners from Sams Club in a 12 pack for just a little over $12 and they burn for about 6 hours each. I have also seen them at Dollar Tree but theirs only burn for 2 hours... Years ago I bought a stove called "Magic Heat" and it was the same concept. A Diethylene glycol wick stove with a windscreen / pot stand that sat right on top of it. It always works great and I like the fact that the Diethylene glycol stove can be stopped and relight later, unlike the Sterno burners.

Hello Jon: I have used this arrangement for a few years and I have a few comments. 1) The fuel is poisonous! 2) Once you burn out all the fuel you can refill it with alcohol 3) Refilled with alcohol you must change the seal material at the top (soda bottle seal works) 4) It takes about 15 minutes to boil 2 cups of water using alcohol.
