Great tip about putting the cardboard against the radiator I have done that for several years when working on any vehicle that requires removing the fan and or the water pump or whatever is on the front of the engine. 👍

Hey drew I have a question about the thermostat bleeder valve I seen manuals say to put them in with the bleeder valve in the 6pm position which is better the up on down position I am about to do a water pump and timing set with the new thermostat as well

You are correct. The manual says to install it in the 6 position. This is the only vehicle I have seen that, so I installed it at the 12 position still. I have heard that either way will not cause an issue.

On the 3.4l, you can turn the cam completely around. This engine is not an interference engine.

Hey drew, when the cams gears are lined up with the markings and harmonic balancer is at zero , but the crank gear dotted mark is not line up with the nipple, it’s off by a tooth, how do you get it to all lined up?

  • @shoptimewithdrew

You will need to remove the belt and rotate the crank slightly. If you get a factory belt, it will have timing marks on it. If the marks line up, it will be in time even if the cam and crank are off the engine marks slightly. Hope this makes sense.

Enjoyed your video, I just replaced the water pump and thermostat on my 1990, unfortunately to no avail still overheating, head gasket on the 3.0. I acquired a 1996 with a recent timing belt lots of new parts shocks brakes etc but with cracks in the frame. I will be doing the conversion to the 3.4, I love all these videos as you show tricks of the trade for installs etc, I feel confident I can get it done. Going to save my second gen is in great shape otherwise.

If you are talking about the marks on the belt, they will only line up on the initial setup. You would have to rotate it several times to get those to line back up. After the initial setup, you go off the marks on the engine, not the belt.
