I've studied Renzulli for decades teaching gifted kids in high school and also gifted kids in middle school. Awesome guy.
His paper introducing the diagram was published in 1978. If you want to read the original document, search "What Makes Giftedness? Reexamining a definition" You may find a republication in 2011, its virtually the same material.
I'm glad to hear your take on it! When I first saw it they had "motivation" in place of "task commitment" but either way, I saw the same issue with 2E kids. The thing that put me off on that is that it doesn't make us any less gifted, it's more about potential for output.
