@@lewisone Oh I didn't think it was sus - just unfortunate. You can't expect every event to have perfectly framed 1080p footage of every solve. Though … now that the technology is so affordable, you'd hope competitions would see the value in acquiring a dozen octopus-style table tripods, old smartphones, and SD cards, and just film every table as a matter of course. If only to offer the footage to contestants themselves.

Can someone explain how they ensure that all scrambled configurations are equally difficult to solve?
@ps.2
11 ай бұрын
They're not. I think an app generates a _completely random_ cube state, then the same software works out the shortest/quickest set of moves to get to that state, so the organizers can prepare the cubes. (The _official rules_ just say that every scramble must be at least 2 moves away from solved. But in practice, that should never come up, except on very simple puzzles like the Pyraminx.) This was an easier-than-average case to start. But these world records always are. _In a given competition,_ all contestants get the same scrambles. So there's that. But also, the main competition is not for the single best time, but "Ao5" (average of 5). You do 5 solves, throw out the fastest and slowest, and average the 3 middle times. This compensates a lot for just getting lucky or unlucky with your choice of strategy on a particular solve. (Like Max's solve here, where he happened to get a pretty fast OLL case, the second-to-last step, and it also happened to resolve into a "PLL skip" where the last step was already done.) (Max had a lucky break, but he _also made his own luck:_ to start the solve, he found and used a really efficient first couple of steps.) The Ao5 world record is distinct from the single-solve record we see here. Both are impressive, but the Ao5 is a bit less about luck. On the other hand, when you've done hundreds or thousands of solves in competition, _everyone_ has a chance to get a lucky case from time to time.
Me who didn’t understand anything he said 💀
it seems like there's a slight delay between him pressing the those buttons at the end and the timer stopping, is the timer shown below is timed perfectly on its editing? coz if so, he could have gotten at least sharp 3secs for that if that's the case...
@charlieharrison
Жыл бұрын
The timer and display are two separate devices plugged into each other, there's visual lag between them but the final time is still accurate to the millisecond
That’s legit a move every 0.1 second, that’s insane
Let's goooo

yes, while the WR single, (the fastest time to solve a cube 1 time) is extremely luck based, the WR average (the thing us cubers consider to show more skill) is more skillful. Here is how world record averages work. step 1: do 5 solves step 2: take away the slowest and fastest solve step 3: calculate the mean of 3 (the three other solves) THEN BOOM! you get your ao5 (average of 5)
Fun fact: at the start of this solve, Max had the option to either do D or D’, he chose D but if he chose D’ it wouldn’t have ended in a PLL skip and it would have resulted in a 4.73 second solve.
It's been 44 years and I still have finished the cube.
