$3,000 Bargain Sailboat for Sale! | EP 57
We spotted this sailboat for sale a few weeks ago and wanted to know what was under the winter wrapping... turns out it was a very popular (almost 1,000 made) Grampian 26. We are delighted to find it in quite good shape despite being wrapped up and on-the-hard for 7 years. Check it out!

Actually some of these older boats deserve the time, unfortunately, people want A/C, dishwasher, washer/dryer, 4 car garage, electric sails, cruise control and absolutely no working on the boat. If any boat requires any work, NEXT! For something they may use every other weekend through the summer only.

In their day, these boats were rockets, particularly in light conditions. I crewed on one in 1972. The local PHRF handicap committee in Montreal kept increasing our rating until ours matched that of the C&C 30. Even still, we won every race but the last one that season. Our local hot shot, who raced an Alberg 30, called them ugly. My response was, "Yes, but ugly boats go fast."

Claim! I’ll take it. Oh wait. Drat! Wrong side of the continent for me but still a perfect boat for an electric outboard with regeneration so you can recharge your batteries while you sail (links omitted), just to get off and back to the dock. What a great find for the money. I’d take it in a New York minute. But who you call’in lumpy, gramps? Who else …? Who’s lumpy? Don’t talk about my girl like that! Ha! Captain Q Thank you for this episode. As someone who was born and grew up in Oakville and currently resides there, the history of boatbuilding here starts at Oakville's very beginning due to the stand of Oak trees that was here. Today I am not sure of any boat building going on. I didn't even know about Grampian although I grew up a stone's throw from Woody road. I knew of C&C here. I Own a Shark which is up on a smaller lake in Ontario which is my first boat and I am seeing where it takes me. Thanks for your channel I don't miss an episode! Don

Great foundation to a perfect custom build. This one is making my mouth water. Work and cash, this would be an incredible boat. These are completely capable. Well, as capable as the sailor sailing it.
I have seen a few of these on Lake Champlain and down at the Royal Saint Lawrence yacht club. I never would have thought they had that much headroom. For it's size that's very surprising. Trust you two to point out the overlooked gems. Love, love your series and keep up the great work. Well at least until you find my Hans Christian 33. Cheers guys.

Great show. Thank you!
I owned one in the mid 80’s. Great cruising boat for Long Island Sound. Mine had a swing keel. The chain rusted and broke, I removed the center board and just sailed it with fixed keel portion. The six foot headroom was great.
Love 💘 Perfect boat for weekending and more.

Thanks for the memories!! Now a days I graduated to a Oceanis 40 Beneteau after 40 years lol of living and working in the Caribbean/states but am getting along in age and am going to sell her and buy a narrow boat and live on the canals in GB ! Yes I know it’ll be a downgrade but without crew I’m too broken to solo anymore on the ocean lol! I love this boat though! And I loved being a stick boat captain!!
Great deal providing sails are good? If not: that's another 3-3500 bucks on top of 1500-2500 for reliable outboard. add another 2000 for basic electronics. Add another 2500-3000 for hot water for sink, shower, water pump, water lines, and larger water holding tanks. When done: I see a 10-12000 boat that will safely and comfortably take me anywhere. Not a bad price for a reliable boat. Reasonable and cheap investment for fun times. Sweet boat!
@crankyoldguy2
2 жыл бұрын
He didn't show us the head, but my guess is that, because the boat is not large, it's 'good luck' if you want to put a shower (maybe also a sink0 in the space and still be able to sit on the pot. In a boat this small, water is pumped at the tap most of the time, so a water pump would be a luxury that you COULD add without much effort. The boat was manufactured prior to the mandates concerning waste water, so I'll bet there's a direct head, not a chem toilet or holding tank. Et cetera. A great place to start, and as you suggest, it will 'need some work'.

A quick correction on Dirk's name, it's Dirk, not Dick. I grew up in Oakville and my family owned a Grampian 26, a fairly rare one as the hull was chocolate and the topsides were cream. The name was Irish Coffee. I knew Dirk's son as he was friends with the owners of the sailing store I worked at in high school. Great boat and we did very well racing her. In the summer I lived on the boat down in the harbour, many great memories. I would buy it in a heart beat, especially for that price, if I could get it down to Belize without breaking the bank.
A friend of mine had a Grampian 26 for decades on Lake Superior. He would vacation on the lake foir weeks at a time, plenty of storage on the boat. He did not like the narrow side decks, eventually solved by replacing his hank on jib with roller furling

That's just what I'm looking for...
I think I would buy a lot, run utilities, dig a shaped hole, park it in the ground, add a solar panel deck covering and would be cost effective housing....So for around $10k or less you have a nice home for a single person/couple....
That is a REALLY lovely boat. I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but it'd cost an arm and a leg to transport across the continent :)
1. A little bit off topic but you have wonderful transition music. somebody must be a jazz aficionado. 2 .Depth sounders of the type shown here could also give you a clue as to the type of bottom, a hard or soft bottom, based on the width of the indicator illumination of the face of the "dial".
@YachtHunters
2 жыл бұрын
I never thought of that but what I did like about it was that you didn’t have to stare at it to know what the water depth was you just knew on the “clock face quote of the depth sounder roughly what the depth was at a glance. It was very convenient and somehow more relevant to what was going on with the water. Just reading a number makes you have to think for a second how that relates to you. Watching a flashing line slowly decreasing or increasing tells you that you’re on the right or wrong track

We are both jazz fans Randay is truly a musician
My previous boat was outboard powered and a similar type and size though different design my children my wife and I enjoyed the heck out of that boat and did some serious miles and long holidays away, my current boat is diesel inboard and I miss the outboard no heat or smells in the cabin and repairs were so easy particularly as when all else fails taking the outboard to the mechanic is allot cheaper though as I was poorer then I would just buy old second hand outboards when they wear out. An awesome system only downside was outboards could be a bit poor at handling hobby horsing so an occasional headwind through a tight channel could get difficult.
Apart from looks only its mother could love, the downside to such a tall and boxy cabin is the very narrow side decks. As the great Uffa Fox said: "If you want to stand up go up on deck".
I'd turn the coat closet into a stand up shower.
Sort of like a BALBOA 26 made in Clearwater FL in the 70's

I need a $6500 heater for my family this winter. A part of me is saying that if I can find $6500 just to keep warmer than our single fireplace would, I couild certainly find $3000 for this boat.
